David Loy speaks about how our sense of self is made of stories. Stories are essential to who we are and how we understand and make sense of the world, yet we are usually unaware that our stories are stories. Accepting or identifying with certain stories about the self and trying to live according to them can create dukkha or suffering. We keep returning to the foundational story of the self, supposedly individual and real yet composed of the stories we identify with and attempt to live. We can reduce our suffering by seeing through the stories we have been trapped in.
