R.I.P. D.L. Extraordinery and thoughtful. Best director of last 50 years. Episode 8 of Twin Peaks: The Return is the best thing ever broadcasted onTV in known universe.

What a unique, bizarre and ultimately wonderful cinematic vision David Lynch had. His filmography is up there with Frank Capra, Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock & Stanley Kubrick. Very insightful & interesting memoriam by TJR.

In a way, this is reminiscent of Kubrick’s passing more than a quarter of a century ago: it represents the passing of a unique and singular artist, whose absence leaves a gaping hole in the film industry. Moreover, it signifies a turning point in film, as the auteurs of previous generations pass on - I’m sure the passing of Coppola, Scorsese, and Spielberg, among others, will engender a similar response.

As a 3rd grader in 1980. My sister took me to the movies and we watched The Elephant Man. It broke me and ill never forget how emotionally powerful it was. I actually told this story to my class for 'show and tell' that next week. I cringe to think what i actually said cause i cant recall. But i know his film made such an effect i had to share it. I empathized with the main character so much. Such a dramatic masterpiece It ishard to watch fir me all the way though because of the feelings i had long ago. But magical human performances one and all. Lynch was an autuer for sure. RIP THANK YOU TJR.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this film. The Elephant Man (Along with "A Straight Story" are his two most accessible films for general audiences. And I agree, The Elephant Man is work of sublime beauty and humanity.

@TJRtheOriginal haha I'd forgotten about A Straight Story. I watched that a few yrs ago. Thought it was odd story. Was it based on a true story??

Yes it was.

So last night, after reading your comment, I decided to re watch "The Elephant Man". I hadn't seen it in decades......It was even more powerful now than when I first saw it.

My favorite Lynch movie is “The Straight Story” which is probably the least Lynchian movie in style. It actually is a straight story.

I love the film (As I do all of his movies). And while I feel the movie is definitely more "straightforward" insofar as narrative, I don't think it's lacks his Lynchian style, so much as it doesn't contain any of the unsettling and or terrifying moments that the majority of his other films are known for. I think that style is still there, but just dialed back.

I had the same reaction the first time I watched Eraserhead. The disturbing aspects of the imagery and situations didn't terrify me, but made me feel like i was in a nightmare. Years later, I saw the film again and I realized his technique was very familiar to me, so it was far less disturbing. What you didn't bring up was that Lynch had a touch of humor in his films and in "Twin Peaks." Intentional or not, I can still enjoy his touches of comic relief, especially in "Twin Peaks." By the way, you named a bunch of films that he directed that I never heard of, or recalled seeing. I have seen all the well-known ones, even "Lost Highway."

I love the humor in his films too. And there was so much more I could have said, but then I would have been going on for a lot longer LOL. I will save all that for when I decide to talk about his films individually.

Supposedly, it was living in the city of Philadelphia (where I'm from) that inspired David Lynch into making 'Eraserhead'. 😮

He has said in interviews that the city of Philadelphia did have some influence on the film.....It wasn't the only influence of course.

I respect him as a filmmaker and ambassador to cinema. But I'm not sure I have ever enjoyed watching his movies. I come out of them not getting it. That's the point though right?
@TJRtheOriginal12 күн бұрын
LOL. I think the real point of a Lynch film is, what does it make you feel? .....And then letting those feelings wash over you.
