I’ve recently been watching lots of videos paying tribute to David Lynch, but it’s nice to hear an artist give their two cents on the impact and influence that Lynch gave to most if not all current artists. I grew up searching for all of his work. He is a major part in the archives of my psyche. Thank you for sharing!

David Lynch was such a character. I still remember seeing Eraserhead in a theater when it came out with my girlfriend (now wife) and how incredibly weird I thought it was but also incredibly magnetic. I have seen every Lynch property except "The Straight Story", his most non Lynch Lynch film. I really love what you are saying about David and I did not know that he was a painter and his quote about coffee and cigs. I hate to pick a favorite but 'Blue Velvet' might be mine. One more thing, when you said that there was no published thought that David was dying. Hell, once you are over 65, you are dying, decaying and you might live for 10 more years or 20 more years but you are dying just the same. I look at life and dying as two kids skipping down the road holding hands, they exist in tandem. Lovely video Fran.

Twin peaks to me was the best. One of the few series that I made time for every week. His cameo’s were equally special. Thanks for helping remember him and his work Fran.

You know what I like the most about so-called strange art? It makes you expand your mind, even more so than "regular art," whatever that means. When you see something surprising, your mind has to absorb that, and adjust to it. I liked Lynch because he wasn't afraid to throw some real curveballs into his movies and Twin Peaks.

Dune is my all-time favourite. The visual aesthetic is what really intrigued me when I first saw it in my early teens. I enjoyed listening to you speak about Mr. Lynch, in part because you speak so well - thank you.

Hi Fran. Not sure if you knew about it but he was also part of a concept album made by Dangermouse and Sparklehorse called "Dark Night of the Soul". I especially like the song he sings called "Star Eyes".

When I first started working at 16, it was in an old cotton mill with 5 floors. Our company was on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors, I used to fly up the worn stone steps in a morning. One morning I raced past our managing director, he was huffing puffing 10 steps up, I stopped and asked if he was ok, he told me he was fine and just carry on! Concerned ne couldn't leave him like that, so I helped him up. He explained the lift wasn't working and the stairs were hard work because he had asthma. In actual fact, he was a heavy smoker and clearly suffering from emphysema, he was only in his early 50s. Now in my late 50s I feel lucky I'm still fit and would have a good go at flying up those same stairs, I might not get up as quick as I did when 16 though but wouodn't need to stop every 10 steps for 5 minutes! 😮😊

Hi Fran. I've never seen any of your work before today, but I very much enjoyed this one. The talk about coffee and cigarettes reminded me of Frank Zappa, who regarded them (paraphrasing) as "they're not drugs, they're food." ~~~ and departed this sphere at the ripe old age of 53.

I remember walking down the street after exiting the first Dune film and realising I had to acknowledge that a film and a book are two different media, and I should appreciate the film for itself, and resist getting too purist about how accurately it covered the book. Today, I can recall the film far better than the experience of reading the book.

Don't miss "Inland Empire". It's long. It's weird. It's incomprehensible. It's Lynch. It plays on a hypnotic subliminal level like all Lynch films. Also I was never a Laura Dern fan *until* I saw "Inland Empire". Her acting is so intense I'm surprise she survived the movie.

I well remember being called at work by a then film editor friend if I was free that evening as there was a film opening that night that he thought I'd enjoy. I was about to head home so I changed plans, agreed and he whizzed up to collect me on his Kawasaki 900 and we weaved at speed through city traffic from my studio to the cinema just by the National Portrait Gallery. We made it just in time to see the start of the film and my friend laughed through it, afterwards we whizzed to a Greek restaurant near the British Museum with him still laughing as we ordered. When I asked why the laughter, in true Stuart style he leant across the table and hissed ........ LSD.

Sting!! Absolutely spectacular, I loved his dun e even though I don't think he was happy with it because of all the studio interference. I would love to have seen what he would have done given the kind of budget of the recent version.

10:05 $44million is a "limited" budget? In 1986????? I love Dune. My friends love Dune. But there are moments where the effects look inexplicably bad, considering the budget...even if his goal...was to be true to old processes. Plus...it ain't like Dune was made for 8 year olds? : )

Stravinsky talked about the dread of the 'blank slate,' where you start out to make a work of art and the whole world is possible from that blank slate. It's enough to make you frozen. So he imposed restrictions on his own work from the get go.

I've only seen the first Villeneuve Dune. I thought the ornithopters were good, but it was following after Lynch. I saw the Lynch version on a big screen in London first time round, however, it grated a bit. At the time, there was prestige in just bringing Dune to the screen at all. For me, the part of the book that resonated most was the reuniting of Paul and Gurney in the middle of intense fighting. The Elephant man featured extreme emotiveness. I expected John Hurt to get best actor for creating a brilliant persona under all those prosthetics. The scene where he reveals himself by quoting the Bible was perfection in delivery and culmination. I could go on but suffice to say, I just about 'got' Mulholland Drive on first viewing, though not in exactitude.

I also adore Lynch's The Elephant Man. Though some consider it 'straight', it is still very clearly Lynch, made obvious by the Incredible opening scene.

I agree that Lynch's "Dune" was an overall good film, albeit flawed in ways mostly having to do with squeezing the novel into a single film. Although there is a lot to like in the TV miniseries version, and the recent 2-part theatrical version, I would still choose to watch the Lynch version when I want to watch again. However, my favorite Lynch film is also probably his most mainstream and surprising, "The Straight Story".

I too had the vision of coffee and cigarettes and art (or music). It started around age 12. Fortunately, I quit smoking for long periods -- and took it up again for shorter periods. Ultimately, allergies helped me stay off the cigs. I'll probably live longer than I want to.

"Inland Empire" is my favorite of Lynch's and I much prefer the Lynch's "Dune" to the new one too (same feels as yours). Not sure why people even like the new "Dune" movies as they are too cold and boring.
