Here's my completely subjective view: I've been following this channel I don't remember how long, you were definitely less grey than now, some years. I have a certain interest in electronics. I have an education in it, but didn't use this education until 20 years later when I got into pedals and building electric guitars and realized I already knew some of this, neat. I have a certain interest in science and space, probably a bit more than the electronics. But, to be perfectly honest, I follow this channel more than any of above mentioned reasons because the personality of Fran. I dunno, it's comforting just having another nerd talk about stuff. My favourite type of videos on youtube are the kind where if the camera did not exist the person in the video would probably do the thing in the video anyway. So like... "anti-content". When people do videos just for the clicks and not because their own interest in the subject one can usually tell and it puts me off. Not saying that you do. One of my favourites on youtube is Look My No Computer. It's music stuff, it's electronics, I believe he would do the things he does even without the camera, and he's, like you, a personality. Sorry for the essay; I took a break from coffee and recently started again!

You are awesome, beautiful, smart, but the later generations are nothing like the generation that we went through. We worked with discrete components and now everything is on a chip. The stuff is so cheap that everyone can buy it and it stops working they just throw it away and buy another. So we all love watching you, Fran, keep that face coming!
@kenmore01Ай бұрын
I still make things out of discrete components. I enjoy it, I can still get them (through hole parts) and of course some chips mixed in because some designs need them. My "workshop" consists of my dining room table lol.
@jnhartonАй бұрын
A big part of that problem is the high cost of parts vs a finished product with respect to purchase volume. At low volumes, the price of buying parts even from a distributor can add up really fast. You can do way more with a $5 Pi Pico than you can with $5 worth of bare components. And the type and depth of knowledge required is different.

I find the same on my tiny channel. Projects, even educational ones, and repair videos get 1/5 the amount of views than does a "mailbag" or "review" video, yet they take the most time by far. It's like everybody thinks they know everything already, but going onto forums like EEVblog or allaboutelectronics that is clearly not the case. Who the heck knows Fran, who the heck really knows. Can you not move Franlab to the factory? I hear you mention the factory all the time, but you also keep saying you no longer do any manufacturing. Obviously I do not have all the facts that's why I ask.

Fran, sometimes you gotta take one on the chin. It's time to stop paying the bills and get your cash together for the rental of a large truck to take you south with as much important stuff as you can take. My only thought is the steady move west of people who had nothing left after the great depression. There are great little towns with lots of big buildings to rent that would love to host FranLab 4. The city is much much too expensive to stay in in my opinion.

Not necessarily the case. Usagi electric fixes up old mini computers ( not micro computers) and he seems to get a lot of followers young and old who are just fascinated by the old tech that many have never seen before, particularly the youngsters. He even seems to get a lot of non technical comments who are also fascinated by it. This is the reason I came to franlab to see the exotic old display technology that I never knew existed even though I worked during that era.
@morlanius26 күн бұрын

(( What Is Electronics? My Mission For FranLab)) is the first vid. of Yours I ever saw & is still My favorite! How the (once common) Hammond B-3 made an entire universe of sound ((And flung it around in a way!)) that no digital unit will ever reproduce! And how with good maintenance even these electro-mechnical instruments get / (Sound) better with age. Some thing that as a big time vintage Speaker collecter I have noticed over the last 60 Years. How the materials in the instrument seem to mechanincally / molecularly mate over the years, or (settle) in pipe organ, violin, cello, Piano, lore. Happy Listening.

I love your Channel. I’m also a Subscriber. I’m financially hooped. I’m in m my 23rd year of paying off my 25 mortgage and due to circumstances I’m just not likely not going to make it to the end. So I’m not really able to help your channel with financial support. I can try to help with ideas. If you can find those 1970s little pump up water rockets in China, you could get a limited run of those done with Fran Lab printed on them. I’m betting that would just fly out the door of your mercy store.! Nostalgia can be a powerful sales driver. Also the episodes you did on the whole UAP/Alien thing last year, were the ratings on those very good? I think you really brought in a valuable perspective so far as your scientific mind and your sceptic perspective give you a unique position that makes you very relatable to people that make up the majority of society that don’t really know much about or are even able to relate to this topic. I think people might be very drawn to your channel with your common sense and down to earth manner to just help them wrap their minds around what this all may or may not end up being as it unfolds. The next hearings are coming up on Nov 13 in the house. Your analysis of this event I think would be just invaluable to the average person. I think it would be of benefit to yourself and everybody watching to analyze these hearings and perhaps follow this topic as things drop over time as sort of a branch of the Fran Lab that investigates things from a more scientific viewpoint. I hope those will help you generate more revenue to pay that rent and provide the needed funding to do the builds you’d like to do. :)

Fran, I have always appreciated your electronics videos, and watch most of them. Of course, some are more to my taste than others. I find your "build videos" (not many of those) to be too tedious (e.g. the one building the Heathkit GC-1006 clock) because seemingly everything is shown more or less real time). Every KZbin content creator has to make videos the way they think best, whether it is from their OWN sense of best value, or perhaps going crazy trying to chase the KZbin algorithm, metrics, etc. You can't please everyone, and if you try to, you will lose sleep and probably your mind too. The best stuff on your channel (from my own perspective) is when you 'discover' and tear-down various vintage electronic things, i.e. some of the interesting old display technologies. Or when you were working to recreate the electroluminescent display for the Apollo DSKY. Rambling on various other topics will be hit or miss, depending on the viewer. I think it has very little to do with how much your face appears. I am not a superstar content creator, but I have been making videos for my channel since almost the beginning of the platform. I started making very crude little 'science videos', only a couple of which I still have up on my channel. Unlike most creators, I just put up what I want, in the style I want or think is best, and only when I want. I can do this because content creation is a hobby I enjoy, not a job, and I get a certain fulfillment from doing it, but NOT for profit. I wish more creators would drop the whole "KZbin bucks" stuff and just go back to doing it because they have something to share with the world. I feel bad for people who have made KZbin content creation their full time job, although some of them seem to do it happily and for a long period of time without burning themselves out. The majority of my own videos are of me building something (wood shop, metal shop, electronics), but each of those videos, while they have subscribers who seem to really like them, only number in the low hundreds of views. Then, I take a video while on a train trip, or make a museum walk-through video while on vacation, and the number of views is quite large. The ones that I put the most work into are vastly less popular than the ones I just do as an afterthought or incidentally. Again, I have the motto "I like to share knowledge and experiences, and doing it makes me happy, but I never monetize, or look at the metrics, and to hell with the KZbin algorithm". I think more creators would be happier if they went back to this kind of philosophy. I wish you well.
