@TheAlexkelaru "The Sickness Unto Death" by Soren Kierkegaard... it's almost impossible to get through, but it's mind-blowing.

David Milch is a genius. That said, The young are not the class with the Disposable Income. That is 45+. Empty Nesters and the like. It is also why every TV show is written for Old Ladies and why Soap Operas are on for 30 years or more. That also might be why his shows have immense critical acclaim, but fewer viewers. I always thought it was because less people are going to "get it". Deadwood is the greatest show that ever lived but too many people, and 20 somethings all wrote it off as violent and vulgar and never even gave it a chance. It followed The Soprano's and people were saying gratuitous this and that, go figure! But the dedication of the 2 million fans that follow it even today, bought DvD's etc...shows there is a market for it.

So here's the difference, the art: No one I've ever met who enjoyed the Sopranos ever, ever rewatched it. It's mass-appeal vs. art. The masses care what happens, but not why it happens. Once they know the what of a show like The Sopranos, there's nothing more there. The ending of that series is almost like a "screw you" to the fanbase because they didn't get to know the answer to the final what. Drove 'em nuts. Deadwood, by contrast, has the what to set up the process investigating the why. It is endlessly rewatchable.

@@unprofound I rewatched The Sopranos. Granted that Milch is the deeper writer, but The Sopranos is not without its significance. After all, the show begins (although doesn't end) with a psychological investigation of that very complex central character. Going up against Milch though is like going up against Shakespeare; no one is going to come off well.

@@mdavidmullins Maybe I was a bit harsh on the Sopranos as far as rewatchability. But you make a point that I noticed too. We start with the psychological investigation. It was a fascinating premise. The emerging self-awareness of a mobster. The need to reconcile that life. But as the series went on, it seemed to move away from self-inquiry. More action, less motive.

He's very generous with his time. Or has nowhere else to go. Either way I fear he's wasting his time with this lot. But glad for the video nonetheless.

Can't disagree. This one's a bit hard to watch, his audience is very much reflected in the way he speaks.

David Fucking MILCH is going to speaking today in your very small class: Kid rolls in 10 minutes late?!?! USC. Must be nice to be super rich.

What a waste having Milch talk to these kids.

hasidim but i dont belivem. he wasn't making any sense until he did. I almost gave up when he was talking about the universe and self. Then suddenly he tells what his studio tells him and it all makes perfect sense! So you guys go out and spend your disposable income on some crap.
