David Moyes revisits the managerial career that started at Preston, and took him to Everton, Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham.
After 11 years at Goodison Park, where in 2005 he impressively inspired his team to fourth, he was recruited to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
A difficult period meant he was dismissed before the end of his first full season in charge, but he returned to management with Real Sociedad, and later to the Premier League with Sunderland and West Ham.

I will always have the upmost respect for what Moyes did at Everton. He prevented that club from vanishing into the Championship and lower, on a non existent budget. Bringing in Martyn, Cahill, Arteta, Saha, Lescott for next to nothing, amazing. What he did for Everton over 11 years earned him the job at Old Trafford, never forget that.

We weren't going down when he took over, he never prevented us going into the Championship. He had a smaller budget but still one of the top 10 in the league. Everton were never as small as he made people believe and he was never as good as he wanted you to believe. He did well initially but he had Everton dropping slowly down the league. When he left Martinez beat his best season by 7 points, and the previous season by 9 points, with largely the same side. Moyes stayed too long and went stale.

steve ferninho Walter Smith won 1 game of his last 13 in charge, taking a pathetic 7 points out of 39. Losing to Sunderland & Ipswich who went down. Moyes won 13 points out of his 27 possible, beating Derby & Bolton who were scrapping with us. Everton stayed up in 2001/02 by 7 points. I’d say he stopped Everton being relegated.

Spot on Steve,no way were we winning anything with this guy as he just didn't have that winning mentality,I went to many games were I thought go on we can beat these go for it but for whatever reason he/we just wouldnt/couldn't it drove us fans mad,his record against the so called top 5 is beyond appalling and the cup final against Chelsea,we were lucky not to have been beaten 6or 7 to 1,I was so pissed of that day sitting there surrounded by thousands of evertonians bored out of our nuts watching Chelsea play with us whilst that gobshite Moyes just stood admiring them instead of changing his shite tactics, same thing happened against a shite Liverpool team in the semi at Wembley a few years later,he was and is a50% manager,if you want middle of the road stability then hire Moyes it really pisses me of when fans say he was great for us HOW as he won fuck all the only Everton manager in our history to have not won Everton a trophy in a decade, whenever we /he really needed to win the important games he FAILED evert single one of them.

All in all this man has a great understanding of the professional game from grass roots to the owners. When he said that it was about appeasing the owners that’s exactly what it’s about. Some of these managers fail, because they don’t get the proper time to “over haul”. That takes time.

To be fair, he got the chance to be the coach of Man United due to his track record of longevity and that same Scottish cloth like Sir Alex. But I think anyone would've had a very hard time taking over Sir Alex. No doubt he didn't get the backing he needed from the board. It also didn't help him that David Gill left and Ed Woodward has taken over so the club losing Sir Alex and David Gill was a huge shake-up in the management and executive structure of the club. The other thing I honestly wished he did was actually keep the coaching staff at United instead of bringing his own from Everton. Rene Meulensteen and Mike Phelan understand what the club is all about and could've helped Moyes transition into it easier. The squad he inherited from Sir Alex also needed to change with a good number of players over 30+ years old. Playing style, tactics, and management wise: if u guys remember the fulham game at Old Trafford where Man United set the record for the most crosses in a Premier League match, they only managed to draw 2-2. Emphasis on defensive structure formations and focusing on opponent's strength rather than your own attacking strengths and ball skills caused a change mentally to players as well. Ferdinand said "dang I didn't know our opponents were that good". You would never heard that during Sir Alex's managerial time. But overall, football was turgid and his successor Van Gaal wasn't much different except Van Gaal actually did well in big games against top 6 oppositions.

it's not just getting the owners, CEOs and directors to understand change takes time. The biggest factor is probably the fans. You see them demanding the head of managers if they don't get good result in a year. The problem is, the more often you sack the managers, the more difficult it is to get back on track. After Doc got sacked United went for 9 years of unsuitable coaches with decent players before they hired Ferige. it took Fergie 7 years to a league title. Liverpool has been not competitive for 15 years, and then there was another 15 years doing right thing and wrong thing. City had spent years gradually rebuild. Yet us United fans want us to be competitive next year after 7 year's mismanagement. Ole might not be a tactical genius. I don't know. But his rebuilding is definitely on the right track. We should let him continue, and see what progress he makes. I want to see our players fighting for the ball on pitch. I want to see them dejected after a loss, not posting on instagram. I want to see leadership returning to the team in and out of the dressing room. I want to see them respect the badge and play for it. It won't be fast, It will be painful to watch Liverpool collecting medals while we struggle to get CL football. But if we are patient, and make sure our manager is a good fit, we will come back.

I remember going to games at EFC and hearing the moaning coming from fans at half time, it got on my nerves no end! I have the utmost respect for what he did at EFC, I understand the fans impatience with him because we are EFC fans and want to see us back where we were in the old days before the epl money shift, unfortunately that still hasn't yet materialised and partly because he did leave for pastures new, no-one came blame him for that in all honesty but I still do hold that against him! We'd be on another level by now if he'd have stayed, best of luck to him though and who knows, we might jsut see him back at EFC one day??

Always liked Moyes. People forget how class he was at Everton because of a poor spell at United, which I think Sir Alex fucked him up on before he walked in. The Sunderland spell was a disaster but lets be frank the club was on a downward spiral for years, it was gonna go wrong eventually. West Ham, a ready made club showed him to be an astute manager. Not his squad and at times a basket case with the new stadium etc. But he did fine.
