O'Leary was successful to a point. It's important to remember that the season we reached the UCL semis and finished 4th, we were decimated by injuries for half a season. There was no failure in missing UCL qualification that season. We then set off like a train in 2001/02 and it began unravelling after losing to Cardiff in the cup. Finishing 5th with that squad his disposal (two internationals in every position which was a big thing at the time) was a disgrace and he deserved the sack on that alone, regardless of the book.

He wasted the biggest pool of talent since the class of 92 it’s scary what that team could achieved with that team I believe they could of won a few trophies under the right manager I’m not saying they would of been bigger than United or Arsenal but they would have been as successful as Liverpool and Chelsea

When Brian Kidd landed at Leeds he changed the way O'Leary had played previously. Then the spending became ridicules and the writing was on the wall. (Leeds fan of 57 years)

DOL made 2 fundamental mistakes. He needlessly brought out his book, which alienated him from the players. Also when things were going great, brought in Brian Kidd & moved Eddie Gray to the side.

Signing Keane and Ferdinand was a step too far, they were in a completely different league to the other players. Too much, too soon.

@@thaiscottie65 I just mean that we had more than enough already. Woodgate, Radebe and Matteo as CB's. Viduka, Smith and Bridges as strikers. I think that Matteo, Mills, Dacourt, Bakke and Viduka were shrewd signings (they complimented our squad well, fitting the positions we needed and didn't look out of place alongside our existing players). But I feel that Ferdinand and Keane were excess (they were absolutely fantastic players, but they felt like a stretch too far, like the club had over-extended itself). The key to growing a football club is doing it 'organically' (Ferdinand and Keane were too much too soon).

The team suddenly looked more lazy on the pitch when DOL stopped training them and sitting in his office instead. His plan on overseeing the training from a distance was a bad idea.

FACT FILE: That was a marvellous team in the making. With a few wise signings to augment those brilliant youngsters, a competent manager would have won honours with them. O' Leary, unfortunately, was NOT that competent manager. He was an opportunist who happened to be at the right place at the right time when George Graham suddenly departed to the Spurs. O'Leary began with promise singing his, "my babies, my babies routine". Then the initial success got to his head. He ruthlessly deposed Eddie Gray as head coach and did the unthinkable: he brought in Briam Kidd from across the Pennines. Eddie Gray was, and remains, one of the most loyal servants of Leeds United Football Club. O'Leary, thereafter, became (or imagined himself to be) something of a celebrity: doing the after-dinner-speaking routine, playing golf and absenting himself from training - leaving Kidd in charge. THEN CAME THAT FUCKING BOOK: "Leeds United On Trial": ill-judged, ill-timed, ill-fated. Was that the work of a truly dedicated, intelligent and prudent manager putting "side before self"? Then came Seth Johnson: horror of horrors! He can argue his case and defend himself till he's blue in the face. Sorry, folks: this man, together with Peter Ridsdale must take responsiblity for precipitating the darkest period in the gistory of our beloved club.

I've read Ridsdales book and believe that he's not totally to blame. O'Leary has stuff to answer for too. They both overspend in trying to buy the dream and it failed. As a lifelong Leeds United it has hurt for 16 years u till now. Thank the Lord for Radrizzani and Victor Orta et al. In Bielsa we trust. " We Are Leeds'.

Bollox Oleary had no part in transfers or financial dealings thats all Ridsdale , look at his record since he left Leeds . All Oleary did was coach the players and give Ridsdale a list of players he felt would improve the squad , the rest was all Ridsdale gambling by spending money he knew we couldnt pay back if we didnt get CL football . If Riidsdale had done his job properly he would have said no to certain transfers but he gambled and lost .

O'Leary was a fantastic manager. Under his wing Leeds were never out of the top five. As soon as he was sacked Leeds went down the pan. I believe he was sacked for political reasons after he supported some Leeds players who acted like hooligans in the city centre. I'm not saying he was right to do this, but that does not detract from his managerial expertise.

The scary thing is...everything said back in 2009 is still relevant today. No one ever expects to be relegated but Leeds proved it could happen to everybody, the likes of Leicester and Southampton. The only way things will ever change is if a team like Manchester United get relegated....these big clubs have more debt than the smaller ones but the amount they make from marketing and merchandise keeps them going. Financial Fair Play needs to be stricter.

Made me laugh when they mentioned Kewell. Even at £5m Liverpool were robbed. He was a crock from day 1. Had about 3 good games in 3 years and lied about his fitness and limped out of both the 2005 CL final and 2006 FA Cup final making us waste a sub and keeping another player out of the team.
