People keep hating on Snow for making this decision but really, think about it, if you were rulers of a kingdom and you had the choice of ensuring your own happiness versus sacrificing it by waiting longer to get it so your people can be free and happy, would you really be able to live with yourself knowing you chose your own happiness while your people are left suffering? I think Snow made the right decision. Sure it caused Emma to grow up miserably but she had to think of her people and her friends. She believed Emma would have a happy childhood and grow up strong and happy. She couldn't have known Emma would have such a tough upbringing.

I'm just gonna throw out there that technically David could have gone through the door alone. Snow & Rumple would've went back under the curse & David eventually would've been presumed dead. Meanwhile David would be raising Emma by himself, making sure she wasn't alone and Emma would've grown up knowing the truth. Of course Henry probably wouldn't exist, which would change the story entirely, but clearly there was an alternative path.

I'm writing a fanfic where David goes and brings Emma through the portal to Storybrooke, which breaks him and Snow apart as Snow resents him for doing so (and Emma for being there). I know David would have saved Emma if Snow hadn't been there. In reality, I don't think any loving parent would leave their child like that, given a second chance.

This is nearly the exact same situation Fiona/ the Dark Fairy was in, when she wanted to protect her son/ Rumple by cursing every other child, just to keep him from diing when he fullfils his destiny. She chose to put her own happiness over everyone elses including her sons and with that created the one thing that was going to destroy everything. She became the dark fairy. So in a way it's really nice to see them in a similar situation and not making the same mistake.

@@shireenesherry2872 you sound as if you were talking about changing the past, but in this scene they weren`t changing the past. this was their present, and they made the choice to leave the fate of everybody in the town on Emma`s shoulders, instead of taking charge and trying to find a different solution. since it`s a flashback, we the audience know what happened in the event they chose not to go to Emma, but if they had chosen to go to her, then the future we know wouldn`t have existed, but we wouldn`t feel sorry for it, because we wouldn`t even know this future existed in the first place. yes, there would have been different obstacles, but even when they chose to wait for Emma to become the savour, there were still obstacles, and some people still died. as you`e saying, it doesn`t matter which path you take, there will always be trouble. but the whole shtick of this show is to find another way in a difficult situation. so I find it difficult to believe they would have given up so quickly.

Personally, and these are based off my own beliefs as person, is that they should’ve walked threw the door and got Emma because I believe that as long as you are with family nothing else matters

But at the cost of allowing the curse to remain intact in Storybrooke forever? Snow and Charming could’ve raised Emma and they would’ve been happy as a family, but their happiness would come at the expense of leaving everyone they knew to be cursed and forever not remembering their true selves.

there is always a way, they would have found a different solution. I mean, Regina herself was getting sick of Storybrook, that`s why she adopted henry, so she would have probably broken the curse herself.

I doubt that, to be honest. Regina did not want the curse broken. That was the whole point of her casting it. Had Emma not come to SB and shaken things up, nothing would have changed curse wise. She adopted Henry bc that was the price of her casting the curse. Rumple said she'd get a hole in her heart from it. So in a way he was proven right that the curse and getting her revenge on Snow was not enough, which is why she needed Henry bc he was the love she was missing deep down in her heart. At the same time, Regina is a very flawed character. She loved Henry but would rather him think his fairytale delusion was just a delusion bc she didn't want the curse broken or for anyone to know the truth.
