David Oistrakh usually memorized. The only video I have seen when he did not was in Mozart's Sinfonia concertante conducted by Yehudi Menuhin. The very best version of that music is: * Mozart - Sinfonia concertante - Oistrakh/Oistrakh/Vienna (incontrario motu), where David Oistrakh plays the viola solo, also conducting, and his son Igor the violin solo. Probably they play from notes - the video doesn't visually show the concert. But I recommend it...

After living my life listening and studying the art of violin I think that there is non tthe best or the first or the second This is ridiculousto put great artists in a rang. Otherwise I think that there is a goup of five six or seven great artists we may consider the first ones or the best ones or whathever. But, here there is a but. Íf I listen the soud that comes from Oistraks´s violine is so beautifull with such finesse, emotion and love as if the composer was behind him Ibelieve God is playing With Oistrack

Another thing is that the page-turner for a pianist can usually sit out of the way, partly hidden by the pianist him/herself, but for a violinist the page turner would have to keep getting between the performer and the audience.

Since this is chamber music, I think the usual case is that neither participant memorizes. The pianists has a lot more notes, though I don't think this is the reason. Maybe Oistrakh just memorized this because he's Oistrakh and did whatever he wanted.

Generally memorizing is never seen as a bad thing even if it isn’t intended but not memorizing if you should is a big no. A lot of violinist memorize these Beethoven sonatas as they are so central to our repertoire.

Yes, I agree. The piano has A LOT of notes compared to the violin. Therefore, it's not easy for one to memorize those notes
