This is a revelation. I've been playing this piece for over 30 years and I feel I have just heard it for the very first time! Oistrakh is so much more than a great violinist. He is a complete and sovereign artist.

Thank you for your insight. What a great piece of music this is too.

Definitely the future of violin playing and mastery is guaranteed. There are 21 people currently giving dislike, thumb down for this performanse. I am sure they play it better then Oistrakh, which is remarkable! We are tertibly missing the great performance of these 21 violin samurais.

some people listen with different ears -- I feel sorry for them that they cannot appreciate perfection when they hear it, the thousands of us who know the truth don't care about those who don't...

Probably the best version I've heard! The others seem so rushed and tense, but this is cathartic and meaningful. Definitely gets the music first, and not just the performance

Bauer started to accompany Oistrakh after the early 60s. This means Oistrakh is using his famous André Richaume bow on 1705 Marsick Stradivarius. This instrument and bow, when merged with his incredible technique, created such an exquisite result.

I find his version quite interesting, as he slowed down the "quick falling" of the melody, which normally takes away the tension, but he really just extended the tense time and released it at the very last second. An interesting approach, but while I don't consider this to be the best version of the Scherzo, I acknoledge that this is a wonderful interpretation with an astounding execution.

In the Henle urtext edition what he plays is correct, however in other editions it’s different. There’s a divide over what people believe to be right, however the way Oistrakh and Henle has it I believe is better.

Wow--this is spectacular! I could be wrong, but he seems to be playing on a different violin--this isn't the Strad he plays on in many of the recordings/videos I'm familiar with. Does anyone know anything about this violin? The G-string is astonishingly powerful and clear.
