Thoughtful Thoughts 5.7.24 by John Dunning. Revelation 19-20; The end is near.
Introduction…
We have reached the point in the Revelation story about Jesus Christ returning.
As Jesus said He is the One who is bringing the world to an end, it will only come to an end when He says so! Anyway, this research about the abuse of the earth’s resources may well mean that the second coming of Jesus could be this century, but so many preachers (including even Martin Luther), have predicted a date proving them all to be wrong, so we should be a lot more humble about predictions. What we do know is what the angel told the disciples in Acts 1:11, that Jesus will return in exactly the same way as He went, so just reverse that account to get the picture!
Order of events…
a) In Rev. 19.11-16 we read about “Him who is called ‘Faithful and True’, riding on a white horse. He judges in righteousness and makes war. His eyes are like fire and He is crowned and has a name written that only He understands. His robe has blood on it and He is called ‘the Word of God’. His Word is like a sharp sword that strikes nations. He will rule them with a rod of iron, (unyielding, fair justice).
He also executes the fierceness of the wrath of God, like grapes being squeezed in a winepress and He wears a robe which reads, “KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS”. The picture here is by a Jewish artist of the Messiah coming. (See also Isaiah 63:1-6 where the LORD judges, like treading in a winepress.)
b) In Rev. 19:17-21 there’s a war, which is over with a word from Jesus.
The first two humans to be cast into hell will be ‘the beast’ and ‘the false prophet’, (Rev. 19:20).
c) In Rev. 20:1-3 Satan is bound by an angel and is dropped into the abyss while Jesus reigns for 1,000 years. And Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 6:2 that we will be judging the world. Regarding Satan being thrown into hell, see Rev. 20:10. David Pawson has received complaints that his messages on Revelation 20 had mysteriously vanished. The agent had tested them before sending them out. David’s only conclusion has been that Satan had interfered with this message.
d) In 20:11-15 the final judgment comes when the books are opened. We learn here that there will be two resurrections. There will be one for the righteous and then a second one for the unrighteous.
Summary…
A summary of the order of events Jesus gave us for when He returns…
i). 19:11-16 … King Jesus will destroy those massing to defeat Him in battle…
ii). 19:17-18… Meat-eating birds clean up those destroyed.
iii). 19:19-21… The “beast” & “false prophet” are cast into hell.
iv). 20:1-3 … Satan bound for 1,000 years.
v). 20:4-10 … The 1st resurrection is where the ‘righteous’ are resurrected and reign for 1,000 years.
vi). 20:11-15 … The 2nd resurrection is where the wicked are resurrected for the day of judgment, which David calls “sheol”.
We will start next time with “e”). where there will be a new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem, (Rev. 21:1-2).
Jesus will win and reign forever, and there will be no more tears. From there on, everything gets better. That is the order Jesus presented to John.
Epilogue
The order of events only became controversial after it was tampered with. The early church didn’t have a problem with it because they kept to the order Jesus gave us. Then it’s not difficult to follow… Jesus’s letter to us inspires with confidence, as He has already won. This is a good place to pause our journey through Revelation…
