He’s done it untappered. Let that sink in. If he didn’t breathe the last 10 that would have been a WR untappered.

You don't know what his training program is like at the moment. Maybe he's a bit more tapered than you think. Also, he always breaths a lot in this races, this is how he's going to swim at the Olympics as well, there's no point to think "what if he didn't breath the last 10".

Couldn't agree with you more because I was one of those who thought he wouldn't cut the mustard. I really wish him well but this years games is going to be the most intense ever and the big boys will have a lot to say on the day.

@@anthonyclarke5579 he is one of the big boys. It's Pan Zhanle or Popovici. I don't think the others are capable of 46.7. That's not to say they are going to go 1-2 but barring a crazy turn of events one of them is winning it.

I don't quite agree with the sentiment that he's not tapered. I don't think he trains in that classic high-volume then taper down fashion. If we look at the past he had consistent fast in season times, but he was building up in speed. He got faster every meet so to say. So going as fast as possible at ECs is part of his training. Not tapered, but also geared to go fast here.

I listen carefully to guys in the Sprint Nation and I think the general idea is the swimmers should/could swim fast at any time. They don't seem to respect old school training (things like repetitive submaximal efforts, desc., neg. split, etc.) yet I'm seeing many swims where people who do some of this kind of work are still very fast. I think the women's WR in the 100 Back was just set by someone who has probably done some non-race-pace work. How would Sprint Nation explain this? Are these swimmers fast in spite of poor training and probably capable of swimming a lot faster? I personally love sprint training and feel I could have been faster if I had been trained in a different way, but I wonder if training is just more of an individual thing. Maybe if we split identical twins and had them train in the two different camps over many years we might get a better idea. I think both sprint and distance oriented coaches (and swimmers) seem to think the other group isn't training correctly. Maybe both camps are right depending on how the individual athlete responds to the provided stimulus. Understanding the individual may be the real key....who knows???
