Walking down Marshalsea Road Southwark with a friend yesterday, I pointed to the building where body-builder Dave Prowse ran his gym. I went there 1979-1983, not for body-building but just for general exercise using the machines, and the stench of sweat was quite disgusting. There was no air-conditioning and it was nothing like a modern gym. There were lots of body-builders, ordinary men who were electricians and postal workers, and body building was a sort of cult. The lads grouped around some guy lying on his back on a bench and trying to lift some unbelievable weight with tremendous grunts, egged on by the lads, "Go an 'Arry you can do it!" Anyway, I was pleased to find this because it is the very gym, with Dave himself, and you can see from the pine walls how it might have got like a sauna. Note Dave's strong west country accent.

@@stanleyandus I meant opinions on the movie are very strong one way or another.There are those who consider it one of their favorite movies or think it's horrible.
@stanleyandus3 ай бұрын
I don't know if I can give you a real answer. I guess it depends on what people mean by horrible. There are horrible events in the film and someone probably also complained that they are treated in a joking way. A Clockwork Orange deals (like all Kubrick's films) with the deep feelings and impulses of human beings and how these are ‘regulated’ in the social sphere; the violence is repulsive in A Clockwork Orange but is increased in Full Metal Jacket. Personally, I always find it difficult to call a work ‘a masterpiece’, or even horrible, I prefer to limit myself to the territory between ‘stupid’ and ‘not stupid’, being aware that sometimes my judgement does not depend on the reading, but on the reader.

This is one f my favorite scenes in Clockwork. It is both funny and suspenseful. At a certain moment I swear Patrick Macnee sounds just like Boris Karloff. If I could play one role in the film it would not be Alex but the writer. The character hovered precariously frombeing ridiculous but within the context of the film it works despite Macnee's misgivings about how he was being asked to play the part. In lesser hands it would fail but the satiric atmosphere keeps it all afloat. A great film.

@Bootrosgali3 жыл бұрын
Great this is the anecdote to knock Kubrick nerds out of their seats because Kubricks many multiple takes would be one of the top ten bar points to say about him, so you can pipe and use this story by starting it a little bit cloaked by saying "ah yes,, "One-Take Kubric!k" , you know, to get a startle and get a reaction and probably a few scoffaws and pushbacks as they call it these days., and then you hit them with ol Dave Prowse , god bless him, he actually said it to his face so its signed off 100% Kubrock canon legitimate..
