In "A Clockwork Orange", Prowse's character, "Julian", was the attendant to a wealthy man who'd been crippled during a home invasion earlier in the film. He won the role because he was tall enough & strong enough to walk upstairs, carrying a full-grown man in a wheelchair, keeping the chair plumb, while holding it in front of himself, with no strain.

Think most Brits knew from the very first Star Wars film that Dave Prowse was an English bodybuilder/ actor.. they didn't use his voice because he had a very strong English west country accent and hence would have sounded stupid as Vader.

He was also the Green Cross Code man, an ad here in the UK in the late 70's/early 80's that taught kids how to use a crossing properly 👍
@TheJohnnyCalifornia7 жыл бұрын
He played Frankenstein in Hammer films as well, but it was Clockwork Orange that attracted Lucas to his casting as Vader. Anyone who worked with Kubrick had a lot of credit in those USC circles. Chris Reeve talked about training with him. On the first day, Prowse had Reeve lift an increasing amount of weight until he could barely move it. Once he found Reeve's maximum lift, he told the actor "all right, that's where we start." So on his first day, Reeve had to work with his maximum. That's how he made such rapid gains before shooting.
@HOBBS30007 жыл бұрын
Brilliant. This guy was all over the tv when I was a kid in the late seventies. First as Vader, then as the trainer behind Superman. Probably the first person I was aware of as a muscle guy, showing people how to lift stuff around the house, like two house bricks in a shoulder press. America had Jack Lalanne and Arnold, we had David Prowse in the UK.

This was actually a good add on my early days memories. I always thought that the actor has to be quite big in real life because he was definitely standing on a flat ground. But still credits also to James Earl Jones for giving his incredible voice for that character. That frame combined to the voice was very impressive. Nice work Nick!

I just watched A Clockwork Orange a year or so ago. So, that was Darth Vader tossing Malcolm McDowell around like a rag doll. Interesting. Can't really blame them for going with J.E. Jones's vocals though - he has a one of a kind voice. Incidentally, although we haven't heard you gripe about the recent YT controversy, I'm glad to see ads running on your channel; I'm willing sit through 20 or 30 seconds of tripe to support a channel I enjoy. Keep up the good work.

I'm from Bristol and he's something of a local legend. They were playing pretty lengthy interviews with Prowse (recorded a while back) on the radio a few months ago. Really friendly guy, and sadly it seems part of the reason they voiced over him was that he didn't sound as intimidating or menacing as he looked in the costume. There are loads of stories about his falling out with Lucas, but yeah as is pointed out he had a really interesting life prior to any of his acting. I didn't know about the failed magazine either, hahah, so yeah really great video.

Way to go! This was edifying as well as entertaining. Frankly, I knew that he was in the Darth Vader costume, but I didn't know anything about the feud with George Lucas. Lastly, Dave Prowse not only lifted the Dinnie Stones - still considered a feat of great strength since the lighter of the 2 weighs ~367lbs, and the ~407lb weight of the heavier stone (both 19th century horse hitching posts) greatly unbalances the load - but he also then walked for more than 50 feet with both!

Dave Prowse competed when there were three Olympic lifts. The third was the clean and overhead press, which had so much backbend by the time the IOC dropped it from the Olympics after 1972 that it was like a standing (no leg drive) bench press. The last gold medalist with this lift was Alexeev.
