If NASCAR had the 2014-present playoff system, Ragan could've made the 2008 playoffs on points, and 2011 & 2013 with a win.

I think spending a little more time in Busch/Nationwide would have helped him. Filling in for KB in 2015, he did great in that Martinsville race. If only another top team would have given him a chance. Wish him the best in his future.

The part about Keselowski in 2010 was a bit odd, because he wasn't having problems adjusting or anything like that, he was just a rookie in a bad car. During that time frame: - Penske had been in a slump for a few years and having three cars was hurting them severally in terms of performance. - He was developing his skills in the 09, 25, and 12 in 2008-2010 with surprising results/performances in all three rides. - He shocked people with his performance at JRM in 2007-2009, nearly winning titles (highest finishing Nationwide-only driver in Points two years in a row) then winning the 2010 Nationwide Championship. - Was adjusting to a new team at the end of 2009 beginning of 2010 because of Mark Martin staying full-time longer than Hendrick had planned out. Immediately following 2010, Keselowski in 2011 and 2012 showed why he got the rides he was getting and finished 5th then 1st in the standings.

Roush's development driver program is basically a inverse Red Bull. Years of wasting time on drivers that almost never delivered, while at the same time the entire organization would go through a slow and steady brain-drain in driver and engineering talent. Ragan could have been a successful driver in at least the Xfinity and Truck series, but it's pretty obvious that aside from the occasional flash he'd never deliver in Cup. Though to be fair, I didn't realize that Ragan actually avoided the Sophmore slump. That's sort of impressive and I guess if I was the Cat in the Hat, I might also be inclined to stick with him until 2010 on that fact alone.

I think David Ragan gets a lot worse rap than he deserves from fans. Maybe he was never going to be a consistent threat but he carved out a nice career without many high points. I feel like he was comparable to Musgrave, Reutimann, John Andretti and Nemechek, none were great but they would bring the car home and had some shining moments.

You say David Ragan, who had 12 top 5's, 1 win and 0 playoff appearances in 5 seasons for Roush is like Erik Jones, who has 18 top 5's, 2 wins and 2 playoff appearances in 2 seasons with JGR? I like NRF's vids but this was cringeworthy. Ragan was mostly awful in the 6 car, and was solid for one year in 08. Then he gets the call to replace Kyle Busch and sucks in the 18, then gets the call to replace Brian Vickers and went on to suck in the 55. He's an incredible person, and his likability has kept him in the sport for a while. I hope he sticks around as a FS1 analyst, he's good on TV. Hard for me to sub though with the Erik Jones comp.

Kurt Busch already signed with Penske 2 months before his "DUI" (actually it was just reckless driving). He was never released by Roush except for the last 2 races. But ya know, fact checking is a lost art.
