Remember, this is amateur boxing, not professional boxing. The primary responsibility for the committee is to protect both fighters. In the amateurs, they will definitely err on the side of caution when a fighter is hurt. Duvergel was momentarily out of it and had trouble getting up. Any amateur referee would have stopped the fight regardless of which fighter was hurt.

@SteelSnail dude look carefully at him when he stands up...he is not balanced when he stands up..the stoppage is good...on the other hand, the referee doesnt seem to look at him after he stands up before stopping the fight...a bit odd but he was out thats for sure.

When a fighter doesn’t immediately argue after being stopped it is legitimate. The Cuban was too stunned to argue, good stoppage. Watched this fight live in ‘96.

@tcr9315 Yes, I had forgotten Reid was from Philly. It was a tough pro career for him, as he struggled with one of his eyelids making it difficult for him to have full vision. He notched several exciting wins before taking on Trinidad and losing (though I believe he knocked down Trinidad in that fight). If Reid is wearing a Trinidad shirt rather than supporting Hopkins from his hometown, then you are right. There was a fued between the two.
@johncate9541
@johncate9541 2 жыл бұрын
When Reid turned pro, his handlers fast-tracked him to a title because that eyelid had already been a problem for him as an amateur, and with his gold medal, he was a hot commodity. He won a belt in his 10th pro fight. Trinidad was his 15th. That fight was even through six, but Tito beat him down with his experience in the latter rounds. Reid finished on his feet but lost on points. He had been given a year after the Olympics before doctors said the eyelid would fail. He got three. After Trinidad, he had trouble seeing out of that eye, and barely won three fights before losing to a journeyman and never fighting again. No surgery was able to fix it. He finished 17-2 as a pro.

Most Cuban fighters are tough as hell and have great boxing skills. Erislandy Lara is allegedly 39 (and probably older) and no one wants to fight him. Duvergel's coach in this fight should have reminded him he was up by 10 points and to back off in the last round.

@chriskent2002 - another quick story. In the later '90's i collect boxing cards. Every full box had 1 autographed insert card of a boxer. I bought a box. The autographed card i got inside, yes, a David Reid. Here he was just another kid i boxed along side of as a teen in Philly growin up. It felt great gettin an auto card of some1 from around the way and that you saw as an ama and comin up etc.

:-) Now...I've watched the fight "live" in 1996. Before the fight I thought that MAYBE FMJr. would be the winner. After the first round I already knew it was STodorov who was going to win. And I wasn't wrong. Period.

@chriskent2002 - knew David from the gyms in Philly in the early '90's. I remember us being surprised he made it to the games. He was always down at Champs Gym workin out in the shadows of my man BHop. Reid had created a fude between the two. BHop woulda wrecked Reid. Quick story - when Hopkins fought Trinidad, after the fight that nite, i saw Reid wearing a trinidad shirt supportint Tito and not his hometown boy. Also note - Trinidad had ko'd Reid at this point as well. Unreal but 100% tru

@leonazul28 amateur boxing isn't like that. when your hurt like that this is what you need to do: 1-stand up straight and don't move, 2- put your hands up to let the ref know you are ok because you can't talk to the ref or opp in amateur boxing. Duvergel was very hurt, after the ref called the fight notice what Duvergel is doin', he's still wobbled. In the pro's they would have let the fight go on

I did watched it actually,directly.Don't blame the referee neither-everyone can make a mistake.Especially in a though fight that it was.Mayweather lost,but it doesn't mean the fight wasn't a great one.And just because he is an American,and he became what he did,it doesn't mean that he couldn't lose to a better and much more experienced fighter back then.What's the big deal after all?!?

SiThompson1 that was a tricky call by the referee Duvergel may have been able to continue but he could have been seriously hurt if the ref did not stop the fight David Reid has a powerful over-hand right and one more shot like that could have had a devastating impact on Duvergel-so the referee was wise to stop the fight these boxers were kids not grown men
