Fascinating. As one who has a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, I find Lincoln's style of coping with depression inspirational. Lincoln had a tremendous brain matched only by his heart. Thank you for posting this wonderful look at an iconic figure.

His voters did get exactly what they asked for and in spades. The ones still alive even voted for him a second time as crazy as that sounds. You cannot argue with that I guess. On the other hand the death and destruction of "hard war" and despair of the freed slave abandoned in extremely hostile surroundings is another thing to maybe consider. I imagine if he could look now after the dust has settled - taking a hard in-depth look at our once great inner cities Lincoln would still justify it as "gods will for the evils of slavery". He might be chastened a bit by seeing what farm mechanization did to farm labor but that is another evil altogether and hindsight is 20/20 as they say.

Excellent Lecture. People were only going to get the message through war. Consider the mindset of people who would enslave a person.

There are those among us now who would return the United States to such a horrific time.

@@cedric7122 They do. And the wish is fulfilled. 1,000,000 times every year. But no matter, the historical religious heart and soul of antislavery abolition is dying fast. I understand something like 90% of young people never darken the door of a house of worship. Which is OK because houses of worship properties are sold by the hundreds and thousands every year. These are simple facts.

Abe Lincoln , it appears to me , was able to see the Big Picture: By using the skilled intellectual discipline of his mind, did not allow himself to be overwhelmed by that ... He was a man of the limits and evolutions of his time. - Today we would say he was able to think outside the BOX in which he lived.
