📌DAVID SANBORN HONORED BY MARCUS MILLER | MARCUS MILLER TOUCHING TRIBUTE TO LONGTIME FRIEND & COLLABORATOR
The passing of the great saxophonist David Sanborn on May 12, 2024, has deeply affected the music industry, leaving fans, family, friends, and fellow musicians in mourning. On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, Marcus Miller finally broke his silence, sharing an emotional tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator, David Sanborn, on Facebook. Miller's heartfelt words capture the essence of their enduring partnership and friendship.
=============================================
"I’ve been struggling to put into words how deeply David Sanborn's passing is affecting me. Dave was 14 years older than me, which seemed like a huge difference when I met him. I was 19, and he was 33 - I considered him MUCH older than me 😆. But as the years went by, we became closer in age - you all know how that works. So we did a lot of growing together later in life as equals, making music, navigating the art of making music - navigating the art of life.
Love you man, we'll carry your sound in our heads forever...
Rest in peace, brother."
Marcus 🎸

I had the pleasure of spending many hours in the studio with them making 4 albums with them. It was such a unique and creative bond they had together and I got to witness the real genius they had during their collaborations I write about the making of Close Up in my book and you see how that spark of genius that affected the music that will last for decades and decades

I remember "CLOSE UP". I tried to play the melodies on that cassette on my flute to make my Saturdays worthwhile. Thank you, Marcus Miller, for playing with David Sanborn on that CD. I am just a fan. But a grateful fan!

Lord I feel like crying. David's Alto followed me all around the country and I had all his first original albums. He left us too soon but that's God's business. He died 5 days before my birthday this year. Now at 67 I can't play the sax anymore due to losing all my teeth in 2008. Thank God I'm still a composer, pianist and bassist. Thanks Dave, we all love you more than you will ever know.

David Sanborn was the first saxophonist I heard play. As a child growing up in NYC, I always wanted to play saxophone like him. I ended up starting on Tenor in '92 and never lost the sound of his sax in my head. While I'm not a professional instrumentalist, I can still hold my own and continue to learn from his recordings. He'll be forever missed.

My Condolences to his ,family, friends and fans .. I grew up listening to Dave wayback in 79 when I was a Junior in H.S. I still have his 1st album and the Majority of the rest of them as well...I saw him then when he had Bassist Neil Jason ( who he did the 1st Run for Cover ) then when the Voyer album dropped in 80 ..Marcus put the world on notice.. (although I had already heard and seen him with Lonnie Liston Smith and Linny White ..he was just 17 or 18 at that time ) but I will definitely miss this brother because as Marcus said ..we grew together musically as Musicians who were blessed to perform with him and some of us as musicians would learn his material because we were in bands that use some those tunes in our set.. It really makes me reflect on how the 80's was truly an amazing decade but as we all know all of us has a day.. So stay humble ,have fun ( be safe about it of course ) and stay away from all and any type negativity...REST IN POWER DAVE SANBORN...🎷🙏 . and also to Hiram Bullock ( the guitarist ) my brother you've been gone from us for almost 20 years , nonetheless I still miss you Bro...🙏

So David Sanborn had polio at a young age and he played the saxophone instead of another instrument because he could get around on that instrument easier than some other instruments that he tried. Wow!! What a contribution he made to the world of jazz and pop music. I loved how he soloed and I love how other younger saxophonists emulated his style. Thank you, Sanborn, for your magnanimous contribution to every song you ever played on. Wish you were still alive and soloing,,,

Great tribute, heartfelt! Having met Dave a couple times after all those years of hearing his personal sound, it was cool to experience brief encounters, once in Europe, & once backstage @ Dizzy's Clu., Dave seemed truly comfortable being genuinely gracious. Ironically, i was humbled when he approached me at Dizzy's. George Coleman had acknowledged Dave from the stage, so I was aware he was in the room, but hadn't seen him come backstage, & it was as if he appeared out of nowhere. I thanked him & mentioned that I'd met him before & that I had attended high school with Marcus. Ironically, he responded, 'You know, Marcus taught me something: to save everything.' Got it! Grateful for his personal sound, & how he also paid tribute to David 'Fathead' Newman, the other Ray Charles sax man. Praying comfort for his family & friends, & may he rest in peace.' Bryan Carrott
