Steve Jansen is David Sylvian's brother, his albums are amazing as well.

One of my favourites. Somebody has posted some of the recording sessions for this album. Cool to see Sylvian and Sakamoto working together on one piano writing a song. Search for Berlin Sessions, Brilliant Trees.

Try Sylvian & Czukay's "Plight and Premonition" and "Flux and Mutability" Also Sylvian's "Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities". All a bit in the vein of Eno's experiments. And "Rain Tree Crow" by all four members of Japan.

In my opinion "Plight and Premonition" and "Flux and Mutability" is some sort of 'possible music', difficult stuff ;) Although I love Sylvian & Czukay. Sylvian's "Words With The Shaman" part 1 - 3 is pure beauty, every single sound 😍

@@Sponiwolf Plight and Flux are not for everybody, they're certainly a lot darker than most Eno records. "Words with the Shaman" always reminds me of a long walk either in Thailand or Cambodia. The voices, no doubt.

Evening JP. Dave from London. Of the CDs I have, All Through The 80s, this is one I return to the most. Bought it when it came out, on the strength of the jazzy Red Guitar, but it then opened my ears to his beautiful, experimental soundscapes of the later tracks. Lovely review, Justin.

Brilliant Trees will always transport me straight back to driving through the most amazing scenery in Scotland with this cassette playing in our rental car in the early 90's. I had been introduced to Sylvian through Rain Tree Crow and when I saw this tape at a Woolworth's in London I was so excited to hear his solo work and it ended up being the soundtrack to that first wonderful visit to the UK. Not my top by Sylvian but it holds a very special place in my heart.

It was frustrating having my favourite band 'Japan' break up not that long after discovering them but the release of 'Brilliant Trees' & Mick Karn's 'Titles' certainly gave me hope for the future... The first track I remember hearing was 'Pulling Punches' and I was little disappointed (it has grown on me) the rest of the album when I got to hear it I thought was top notch especially 'Ink In The Well' and 'Brilliant Trees'... Thank for this, so few take any interest in Sylvian...

Yes ... Brilliant Trees. The first four songs are just perfect, deep, amazing. To the following three songs I never felt any kind of connection - weird, isn't it? But okay, after this review I'll give them another try :) And as Hubert said ... I hope you already know the Rain Tree Crow project! Have a very nice day as well :)

Excellent advertising for the album, you had me at Czukay, now I will definitely have to listen. Song idea for New Years: Auld Lang Syne by James Taylor, so smooth baby. Been listening to James Taylor at Christmas at work and it really nice.

Love this album. I bought it in 1984 when I was 11, I was a bit young for it really and only fully appreciated it when I listened to it as an adult. Backwaters is fantastic and stands the test of time.

David Sylvian is one of my favourite artists too, and I love this album, especially the title song, which I probably think is Sylvian's best. I like Gone to Earth a bit better overall though. I was already a big Japan fan, and was mostly into Synth Pop and New Romatics when this album was released. I listened to it in a record shop, but didn't like it or buy it because it had too much guitars! I of course change my mind soon after, and enjoy guitar driven bands too now.

Word play by David maybe....Sylvian (forest) cutting branches (band members) , exorcising Ghosts (Japan's big hit)...I'm guessing David in Hebrew is Bright, shining? Brilliant Trees.

I’m glad that you take time for yourself and share what you like with us. I’ve been trying to listen to parts of this album throughout the day. There are quite few things that I like. I like the instrumentation (types and combinations of instruments used) and I like the use and timbre of the guitars. I probably won’t listen to the album again but that has to do with the genre rather than the quality of music.

Some music doesn’t need to be heard more than once. You are right to point that out, doesn’t make it bad, just preference and limited time.

I just bought a 1984 pressing of this album at a local independent record store based on Justin's enthusiasm for David and from what I know of his collaborations with Robert Fripp and a few of the reactions Justin has done of Japan. I just want to say thanks because hearing this album on original vinyl with headphones has pushed this record up very high on my list.

Quite a lot of the music you listen to are among my old favourites, and in the hope of giving you some more ideas, I will just list an old Spotify playlist I have, where I restricted myself to only one song each of artists I really, really like. There are many favourite artists that are not on this list (sometimes because I was unable to pick one song). You know many of the songs well, but hopefully you will find some new songs or artist worth reacting to (in random order): Cocteau Twins: Musette and Drums Swans: Sex, God, Sex Japan: Ghosts Sigur Ros: Flugufrelsarinn Einstürzende Neubauten: Armenia David Sylvian: Brilliant Trees The Smiths: I know it’s Over Tom Waits: Flash Pan Hunter Nick Cave: The Carny The Cure: Siamese Twins Arcade Fire: Neighborhood #2 (Laika) The Velvet Underground: Venus in Furs Tuxedomoon: Jinx Kate Bush: Night of the Swallow Low: No Comprende The Knife: Silent Shout Thanks

Hey Justin! Another nice job by you, but what else is new? I have a great Christmas song to mention, as I believe you are the perfect music video reviewer to react to a very funny, irreverent version of a familiar Christmas song. The song is "Twelve Days of Christmas" and the artists are Bob and Doug McKenzie! If you are interested give it a try, and if you don't think it worthwhile just don't post the result! But I believe you will get it!! Peace,

I watched David Sylvian in my hometown the same year you were born, 1989, and the focus was on Secrets of the Beehive. Lucky me. My favourite song of this album is Blackwater (though I prefer Rain Crow Tree's slightly different version).

Your review was so good I'm now on my way to listen to this. Somehow David Sylvian escaped my attention all these years. I remember Sylvain Sylvain from the New York Dolls. Not the same......😝 Reminds me of Brian Ferry or Scott Walker. Very smooth. I like it.

As you , I'm sure , have now noticed by now - you got a very small positive reaction to David Sylvian . Personally I like all his albums . But it is undeniable that most people won't click with his music . You will never sell it to the average person , they just do not get it . It takes a sensitive , musical soul to love this nostalgic , melancholic type of music .

WTF! Came 2 Ur channel last week while hopping around some Kate Bush reactions & the 1st thing I hear is U talking about Mick Karn (RIP) & imagining a Sylvian/Bush collaboration! Well, I subscribed on the spot! Sylvian was a massive part of my life growing up (There was a time I thought Forbidden Colours couldn't B bettered - it's still right up there!) Totally agree Secrets..... is my No.1 of his & top 10 of all time. Obviously I'm new here so not sure what U've done but how about the Dolphin Brothers album - can't imagine many people (other than us!) have heard it! Obviously not Sylvian but pretty close!Much love m8, Mike, from London.

Nothing matches the title track for emotional power, both musical and lyrical. Jon Hassell was a genuine musical genius and elevated everything he appeared on. This album is no exception.

In your close affinity with David Sylvian, have you found 'The First Day', his collaboration with Robert Fripp, released in 1993? From a Danny Thompson angle, there's also 'Dizrhythmia', 1988, with DT, Jakko Jakszyk, Gavin Harrison and Pandit Dinesh. For a real sense of the interconnection of many of these musicians, have a look at en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakko_Jakszyk, where you'll find a real family tree of collaboration and bread-earning.
