This album should have won a Grammy. So underrated. So, so brilliant. I never tired of listening to this album.

Beautiful. This album and "Gone to Earth" are to my mind his best work. His progression into a more rarefied avant garde is interesting but at that moment in his life his ability to pool musical talent around him, and his own songwriting craft, peaked to produce earthy, organic, melancholy masterpieces.

I heard this when it first came out, many years ago now - utterly poignant, enchanting and oh so melancholy. Very special. Lasting. Memorable. Just heard 'The Banality of Evil' on the film 23. Fabulous. What subtlty in melody.

After 20-years of being a Sylvian fan, I finally had the pleasure of seeing him live a few years ago at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Absolutely staggering. So tight and perfect, it was like being in recording studio.

i walked into a record store many moons ago and asked the guy who was serving me could i order a copy of 'Dead bees on a Cake' by Mr DS, he said to me that ' Secrets of the Beehive' was his favourite album of all time and that 'Orpheus' was a timeless classic.... He was 17! It brought me great pleasure listening to his passion at the time and totally re-invigorated my belief in all things Sylvian.

This whole CD is one of the most under-appreciated CDs of all time. It's amazing. For some reason it always makes me think of Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels (well, maybe because of "Orpheus" but the whole CD takes me there). I wore out a tape and had to get a new copy.

[Verse 1] Standing firm on this stony ground The wind blows hard, pulls these clothes around I harbour all the same worries as most The temptations to leave or to give up the ghost I wrestle with an outlook on life That shifts between darkness and shadowy light I struggle with words for fear that they'll hear But Orpheus sleeps on his back, still dead to the world [Verse 2] Sunlight falls, my wings open wide There's a beauty here I cannot deny And bottles that tumble and crash on the stairs Are just so many people I knew never cared Down below on the wreck of the ship Are a stronghold of pleasures I couldn't regret But the baggage is swallowed up by the tide As Orpheus keeps to his promise and stays by my side [Chorus] Tell me, I've still a lot to learn Understand, these fires never stop Believe me, when this joke is tired of laughing I will hear the promise of my Orpheus sing [Verse 3] Sleepers sleep as we row the boat Just you the weather and I gave up hope But all of the hurdles that fell in our laps Was fuel for the fire and straw for our backs Still the voices have stories to tell Of the power struggles in heaven and hell But we feel secure against such mighty dreams As Orpheus sings of the promise tomorrow may bring [Chorus] Tell me, I've still a lot to learn Understand, these fires never stop Please believe, when this joke is tired of laughing I will hear the promise of my Orpheus sing

Though I was familiar (somewhat) with Japan, and a few of David's solo songs, I'm most familiar with a collaboration he did with David Byrne called "Gone To Earth". I'm hoping to find some here on YT. I will certainly have to do some exploring of Sylvian's music. I know he has worked with Fripp quite a bit. Great singer!

I was really affected by this video in 86, as I saw how moving image could be more powerful than still photograhy for the first time. It does this through the luxury of lingering on images that transpose and develop. Stunning - what else did Grierson do?
