I wasn’t expecting this! Among a few musician friends, this was an album we absolutely revered. It is flawless, with a sophisticated mood and atmosphere that is utterly unique. David’s a wonderful, capital ‘A’ artist, with a singular vision. Thank you for taking the time to appreciate this fabulous album.

Couldn't agree more. I bet 4AD would've loved to have had this as their release at the time.

I liked this recent quote from Sylvian. 'This is the thing about creativity that is rarely acknowledged: Most people don’t actually like it.'

Sylvian’s incredible. Made me realize how rare it is to find a musician who’s really devoted to the music and developing and exploring a sound. So many fascinating gem, unique sounds and spaces explored

David Sylvian. It’s tragic that someone with depth beyond many regarded as the best Britain has produced, is so little known and appreciated. Why hasn’t a major arts documentary been made about him for starters?

100% agreed...not sure why either all I can say is perhaps much like a Nick Drake you are supposed to discover David plus Karn through some type of process...I'm a Gen X and I've been fascinated since mid 80s...quite the shame he isn't more well known

Sylvian is one of those rare artists that I can listen to at night in a low lighted room, and can end up feeling stoned, serene and happy.

David Sylvian is an acquired taste. I first had the privilege of listening to his "becoming" on the album Brilliant Trees when he was still with Japan. The tracks Nostalgia and Billiant Trees made me lean forward and pay attention, the man was taking me on a journey. His albums that stand out for me are Secrets of the Beehive, Gone to Earth and Dead Bees On A Cake...superlative! Everything & Nothing also stands out. I truly appreciate his uncompromising dedication to his craft, he stays true to the process. Watch this if you haven't, it'll give you a glimpse into his work ethic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rF67ZGmOnp2ca5o.Now more than ever he is exactly what this world needs, he quenches the soul.

A fan since the 80s and Japan, David's work is always engaging and challenging, sometimes I wasn't ready for the challenge but I've always gone back and been carried forward by his work. Sadly but hopefully not permanently David is currently in musical retirement.

A beautiful, dark album. I discovered DS from his first solo album Brilliant Trees which vies with this one for my favorite of his. Listening to this while laying in a dark room is transformative. His voice is like rich dark chocolate.

an album full of silences, guts are required from all involved to explore this way. I kindly suggest you check Mark Hollis' Talk Talk album "Eden" to find a similar level of sensivity and sophistication. David is one of those artist that the notes you're playing in the background doesn't matter, his voice always prevails.

I’m presuming this is the David Sylvian from the band Japan, I’m surei it is because he has such a great sound even after all these years. Hope that sometime you could listen to ‘Ghosts’ by ‘Japan’ which is an extraordinary and beautiful piece. Thanks STB.

Apart so many divine tracks of Japan and David Sylvian how can one describe or say anything about The Devil's Own..is it a song , is it a story from a sacred book , is it a muvie made of words and sound only , is it a mandatory cathartic experience one has to go through ,were only following the voice will lead you back to the light again or all the above and some more? These are my thoughts every time i hear that spell bounding track and i know that i will always feel awe regardless how many times i have heard this track for the last 40 years!

This record reminds me The Poet Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath for some reason , I guess I was reading both at the time and Ted was the poet laureate that year.. 1996. . In Oakland , was when it came out , I had the record and played it a lot.. while leaving with my girlfriend who died last year , now it reminds me of that summer with her. But at the time it was a returning to David after being into Japan.. and forgetting David for awhile ..September is my favorite song and boy with a gun, but I never knew what boy with a gun was about .. I always interpreted it as my own nihilism, when I learned it was about a serial killer , I was disappointed , “it has just begun, the boy with a gun”..
