Released on December 15th, 1978, Gato was a collabortive project between Brazilian Producer David Wojciechowski and British score composer Victor Fritzsche. Around the 1970's, both musicians had a background of working primarily on production music for television and commercial use under the BLOCKYEEN label.
David is a classically trained pianist, keyboardist and electronic music pioneer. His early works often drew inspiration from Latin jazz, blues and easy listening and frequently combined the usage of synthesizers. Victor is a producer and multi instrumentalist from a funk background. Through the 1970's, he mainly worked on scoring themes for TV shows and films. With him also being an electronic music pioneer, his scores would heavily feature the use of synthesizers, with some soundtracks being completely arranged on electronic instruments.
As the story goes, David and Victor met in a café in downtown London. David allegedly got a rotten croissant. "I've got a rotten croissant!", exclaimed David. The two then saw moderate success on their carreers and frequently collaborated in music.
Gato was the first full album produced by the two musicians. Their goal was achieving a haunting, slightly dark yet serene atmosphere. It was inspired by David's sight of a cat when walking to his studio at night. Such cat was later confirmed to not be a cat, but rather a lambecabra, a smaller, feline-like variant of the chupacabra. This detail has never been revealed to Fritzsche and never will.
Gato was later rearranged by David in 1987 for Orangelime's album Electric Jungle Critters.

My dad is a huge Victor Fritzsche fan so he used to play this album A LOT when I was a kid. I still like listening it from time to time for the nolstagia.

Ughhhh I can't believe how good and interesting this album is. It grew on me HARD. This album is hard to skip through because the composition is so dang interesting and layered all over. - I used to skip Sea Bus but I keep thinking about 2:26 in context of the rest of the song and it's so damn good. - If I had this on vinyl, it's possible the grooves containing Werewolf With Pants would be unreadable today. - The motif at the end of Gato is so good... nanana-naaa-naaa-naaaaaaaa - Soft Rain starting with a muted melodic motif it keeps throught while adding rhythm in crescendo... This one feels like it desperately wants lyrics - This is the first time I've heard an album ending that both feels climactic while not exhausting the listener. Incredibly easy to listen to, the music equivalent of popcorn I suppose.

Ah I remember listening to Gato back in 1983... this was back when I was in college and the drinking age in Texas was still 18... they took that away from us the following year.... But I'm also rather thankful because I would have never entered the inescapable ketamine vortex with David Wojciechowski & Victor Fritzsche had I been drinking beer at the bars!! I showed this album to my parents and talked about the backstory in the description. They were nodding along and my mom correctly predicted the style was something from the late seventies. They completely believed it, and I don't blame them. It's extremely authentic to the point where you can just.. let yourself believe. Such a great piece of music. (Obviously I told them afterwards and we had a good laugh about it)

Lovely album, brings back memories! I think at least two tracks were inspired by the great Bill Navidson's soundtrack to the 1973 movie 'Goncharov'. Some segments of 'Puzzle' really resonate with Navidson's 'Clocktower' used in the famous finale of the movie.

I don't think I commented on this before. But ever since you released this album, it's gotten me through some hard times. It hasn't even been that long since it's release either. When you released this album, my pc broke the day before, and I had to fix it myself. This album helped me stay calm over the course of the week it happend. Just last weekend of news years eve I had appendicitis and listened to this album before and after my surgery and it helped me stay calm aswel.
