Project: Traffic flow in Perth before, during, and post COVID-19 lockdown

Abstract: Various cities around the world have measured significant reduction in air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from traffic reduction due to the COVID 19 lockdown periods. In Australia, working from home has increased due to COVID-19 which has an impact on traffic volume and patterns in Australia. According to the latest Household Impacts of COVID-19 Survey conducted from 12-21 February 2021, two in five people with a job (41 %) worked from home at least once a week in Feb 2021, which is relatively higher compared to 24% at least once a week before COVID-19 started in March 2020. 47% of employees expected the amount of working from home would remain the same while 11% of them expected to decrease this amount and 8% expected an increase. The amount of work from home could have an impact on the traffic amount, flow and congestion patterns.
This study is aimed to investigate how COVID-19 has an impact on traffic amount, flow and congestion patterns in Perth by comparing the traffic behaviour before COVID-19, during total lockdown (2020), during total lockdown (2021) and during COVID with no restriction in Perth. It aims to visualise the results this public and private transport usage across the Perth Metro region through a publicly accessible website.
