This icebox was sold in 1937 and appears well taken care of. In this video, I assemble an electric refrigeration system for it, using mostly salvaged parts.

I absolutely adore this old school zinc plating. It is just incredible. No speck of rust after (almost) 100 years. How is this even possible. I also own some ancient household stuff and it is the same there. A washbasin from the 1910s for example. It has a zinc plated strainer insert and it looks absolutely pristine. Amazing!

Another home run in my book David! I love it! I love doing restomods cause it really lets the creativity flow, which I believe you love as well. Sure bringing something back to it’s original state is very rewarding but making it your own? Nothing like that feeling, especially when it works as intended!

Very interesting... I still think about converting an oak ice box with a belt driven compresor mounted on its top... Maybe one day...
@RickBaconsAdventures3 ай бұрын
story has it, my grandpa's dad took some refrigeration classes right before WW2, he was an unrelated type of engineer already but he put together his own icebox conversion out of random parts he was able to get. Funny thing was he put the belt driven compressor setup in the basement so they didn't have to hear it and ran lines upstairs to the icebox. I don't think any pictures exist but all the old family members used to talk about it. My grandpa called the fridge an icebox his whole life.

Thank you Rick. That is a very interesting conversion your grandpa did! We run into the remainder of these homemade systems, every now and then. I always would love to know the whole story on how they came about!

Wow; that is cool! I bet she grew up around things like this when she was a kid.

@@davida1hiwaaynet I would think so. One thing related to refirigeration was I remember her telling about ordering ice cream from the milkman. I think there were 10 people in the house while she was growing up. She made biscuits for them every morning. I never thought to ask when they got electricity. The've all passed away now. The last sibling passed last year.

Looks like the ice box the Three Stooges carried up the stairs to a house only to have it go screaming back down and hit their ice wagon in one of their episodes. Love seeing old appliances in old shows and movies.

That is a funny thought! Hadn't thought about the Three Stooges in ages. They were a funny go-to Saturday morning show for me when I was a kid. I can only imagine how bad this one would be to move up a set of stairs!

Hey I just found your channel and have been watching all your videos. You helped me fix my old Westinghouse fridge that hasn’t worked in years. The start relay was stuck and I rebuilt it the same way you did in a westinghouse video you posted. Thank you. I’d love to do a project like this one with the icebox conversion. How do you know how long to make the capillary tube? Thanks again!
@davida1hiwaaynetСағат бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for your interest in my videos! The capillary tube length can be calculated from the compressor HP, type of refrigerant to be used, and desired evaporator temp. There are charts you can locate on line which give guidelines on it. Glad your Westinghouse was an easy fix!

Amazing job as always! How much does something like this sell for?
@davida1hiwaaynet3 ай бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate it. I don't want to talk money on comments here but if you reach out to me privately I will be happy to discuss how much time goes into a job like this and what the cost would be to do a similar conversion.

Was this intended for rural areas due to it's 1937 build date? Seems late for an ice box. Excellent job on the build!
@davida1hiwaaynet3 ай бұрын
Mike, the rural electrification initiative brought power to the countryside from cities. They branched out from cities and some very rural areas didn't get power until the 50's. Alabama had some areas like that. They sold iceboxes into the 50's which were built just like an electric refrigerator with the same sort of cabinet style, hinges and latches etc. Even sold ones with a cabinet light which had a battery compartment for a 6V lantern battery.
