I had a TCR 1 back in 2006 and I was cycling average 500k/week until 2009. I never had a single issue with the bike and I remember the comfortable ride and the responsiveness it had. To be honest, I’ve never really felt that the component on a bike should ever be a strong deciding factor on bicycle choice. You can always upgrade the parts of a frame at a later date. However, you can’t upgrade the frame, short of buying a new bike. At which point you might as well just have gone with other bike to begin with. In short, buy the bike you want, parts be damned.

Having just taken delivery of the same bike, and being out for my first ride on it today, I can only agree with your review. The bike is really smooth, the power transfer is very good indeed, and it feels fast (although to be fair, it’s the first bike I’ve had in years with deep section carbon wheels, and disc brakes for that matter). Whilst all my other bikes have Campag, I have to say that I’m very impressed with Ultegra. As other people have commented, the colour is a little muted, and I do prefer the paint schemes on some of the Emondas, but I didn’t see the point in getting a Trek which was significantly heavier, and arguably less well specced for the price. This is classified as regular internal routing as some of its shift and brake lines still enter the frameset at some point. External routing only applies to 20th-century road bikes (and some 21st-century road bikes, more commonly on those made out of a metal) where you can see the entire shift and brake lines outside the frameset. Consider yourself fortunate to have a bike with a headset that's convenient to work on, servicing it can be done in less than an hour and an LBS wouldn't charge you as much since it's easier for them.

Thanks for this review, many good points here. Giants are generally excellent bikes with good riding characteristics, reasonable prices, and great manufacturing quality. If you check out CyclingTips, they've reviewed the Emonda, Ultimate, and TCR (so far in their group test). Must admit the TCR did not fare well in their testing, with, longer reach, limited tyre choice, flex in the frame, sluggishness. and a speed wobble being encountered by both testers. However, and I think it is a big however particularly for this bike, they changed the wheel set to accommodate their test GP5000 tyres. And one of the reasons I bought this bike, was the wheels are an integral part of the package, and given their performance I will never have to shell out money to upgrade.

The wheels are well-made but one complaint I have is that they are narrower than I want. I'd prefer them to be width optimized for 28 or 30mm tires. Hello! I am in MTB for almost 2 years and I am converting to road bikes....What do you think about Giant Tcr Advanced 2016 model? - Is it good for beginners? - What is the perfect size for 1.78 cm Height? - Can I do packaging with the bike?

Great review. I got my own a couple of weeks ago. I agree on most points but not on 2 topics. 1st Tubeless is shit, sorry to say. I put some Schwalbe Pro One on right away and it never sealed properly. One tire lost over 4h 2,5 bar and the other one 1,5bar. This matches with my other 2 Tubeless disasters I had. I put some Michelin Power Time Trial with Tubolitos on now. It was a struggle to fit the tyres and a bit scary, because even a clicher pops on the rim as a tubeless. I can't emagine to get a blow off with this setup, it works fine. My 25mm tyres inflated to approx. 28mm on this rim with 80psi. 2nd I rode only SRAM Force mechanical and electrical and RED etap the last years. I got the impression electrical is not a must on a road bike (TT is a other thing), so I opted for the mechnical Ultegra. As I got the bike I wanted to adjust the gears because of rubbing. I watched some videos (SickBiker explains it best) and I figured out this group set does have a "trim function" (SickBiker explains it in a separate video) you have to use it to have no rubbing. The shift performance is great, but this extra work is annoying somehow, it feels so unneccassary. I can only recommend to spend 1k more and get the Ultegra Di2, the bike is with it 200g lighter. Some more info, I changed only a couple of things and was able to keep the medium sized bike at 7,28kg with bottle cage, pedals and computer mount! I used the mentioned Michelin tyres with Tubolito S tubes, Dura Ace cassette 11-28, SQlabs Saddle, Supacaz carbon bottle cage, Supacaz bar tape and Look Keo carbon blade pedals. If someone is looking for a stiff, reactive, light and good handling bike for a nice price don't look any further.

You shouldn’t fault the components for your own lack of experience. Ask your bike shop to fit the tubeless tyres and to index the gears for you. Also, the Di2 version is 200g lighter because it comes with tyres that are 200g lighter.
@borrisjung80493 жыл бұрын
@@Dee-Ell I spoke of 3 Tubeless setups I had, yet. 2 of 3 has been set up by good bike shops. I had always way too much pressure drops over a day. I doubt there is not an incorrect way of assemble a tyre, if there is an incorrect way this would be the next reason why you shouldn't buy tubeless! It is a good idea to learn to index gears. It is not rocket sience, after you understood how the system works, hence no reason for a Bike Shop to index gears or install tyres.
@borrisjung80493 жыл бұрын
@Angus Denvir as I said before, you can't do much wrong. The wheel preparation is crusial, and this has been done by a bike shop or in this case by giant. I know there are people out there who are lucky and got it sealed. Fun fact, I never got so fast punctures or cuts as well. 1st puncture after 20k riding, it sealed but the tyre couldn't hold higher pressures anymore and 2nd a small cut after 45k riding, who didn't seal at all. Bravo, you still need a tube or a repair kit to make sure you will be able to come home.

For a similar price, maybe even cheaper, the new Aeroad has the full aero benefits, the same group set and is a similar weight.

You don't get a power meter on the Canyon. I think he's right when he says it has the best value for money.
@JonReid3 жыл бұрын
@@IMToasts IMO, both bikes are great value, but I think the Canyon maybe represents more value as you’re effectively getting two bikes in one. I guess you could say the same about the TCR, but it’s not as aero optimised as Giants actual aero bike.
@user-jv4fu9uc3e3 жыл бұрын
@@JonReid its funny how all these aero gains in bike, tires, computers etc , still doesn't change apersons physical attributes , a good rider on a non aero bike goes flying by someone on all latest greatest bike, most of its a marketing sales pitch , add up all those supposedly watt savings in bike tires shoes computers handle bars and light wallet you might gain what 20 seconds
@JonReid3 жыл бұрын
@@user-jv4fu9uc3e I agree with you 100% regarding the aero position of the rider, however, in this case the rider will be the same person in the same position, therefore we can negate the effects of the rider/person and look at just the aero attributes of the bike. A German cycling magazine put all the aero bikes through a wind tunnel and found a 40 watt saving at 45km/h over a non aero bike. This drops to about 10 watts at 30km/h. Whilst this isn’t monumental, it will make a difference of a few minutes on a 40km long ride. Interestingly, the difference between the best performing aero bike and the worst was only 9 watts at 45, which basically means if you’re getting an aero bike, choose one that is light and comfortable. The most it will cost you is 9 watts

Hello David, thanks for review, would you please advise me where to buy your merge?
@tubesazzad3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, thanks for the review. I bought the Advanced pro 1 recently, and it's a great bike. I have a question for you. On the Giant's website, in the "Hookless tire test protocol" document it says not to use the "PIRELLI P ZERO RACE TLR". But I can see you are riding this trie without any issue. Does it mean that the "Hookless tire test protocol" document is not updated?

Hi David, congrats on channel, I’m recently got into cycling. I am in between TCR Advanced Pro 1 (with ultegra disc) or Propel Advanced Pro 1 Disc (with SRAM Rival), can you give me some advice on which will be better overall bike?
@davidarthurАй бұрын
Thanks! If you want max speed for racing, get the Propel, but if weight and climbing and comfort are important to you, choose the TCR. Hope that helps

Pack the free hub with grease, it will make it quieter. Check recommendations, they actually recommend it.

Giant are killing it at the moment. The TCR is superb. My last gen SL is a way better bike than my SL6 S-Works Tarmac. Better quality, better ride (stiffness, weight, compliance and noise), though I think the Spesh handles quicker. I've ridden the comparable Emonda and it was an absolute slug. Not a race bike at all. Genuinely, I think Giant now have the Americans beaten in every category from gravel, via endurance, sport to pro race. Hard to think of any bike now that is better than the TCR/SL... Propel still needs a bit of work though. BTW, nothing wrong with a Giant press-fit bb. They are absolutely fine. Not sure I'd pair them with bigger SRAM axles though.
@hippoace3 жыл бұрын
yet the TCR does not get the recognition as you suggested....marketing? bias for the American/European brands? I have a TCR but it is my first road bike so I cant compare to others.

Thanks for the review David. With the finish of this bike being a fade into matte black can you recommend a framer protector/finisher that will maintain the Matt finish. Thank you

Hello David, superb coverage on this bike and one of the best bike channels on YT out there for me to get an honest and in-depth review before I commit and bought this particular bike. Like you said in the video, the Gavia tires themselves are great, but I do wonder if you ever have any problem whatsoever about using tires that are not in Giant SLR's hookless wheelset compability list? Because I read their website and I do know Pirelli Zero TLR and Zero TLR SL are NOT listed. I asked because I'm looking to changing my tires as well. Thanks for reading and replying to this comment

Great review. Thank you. Why all the hate for pf bb? For carbon bike frames aren't they superior to threaded?
@davidarthur3 жыл бұрын
Some people have had bad experiences with them creaking, which is largely down to a combination of manufacturing tolerances and bad installation. On paper it is superior with regards to carbon frames but the execution isn't always at the level it needs to be
@GS-pk9rd3 жыл бұрын
Spot on what you said RE Giant press fit bb86, has been flawless in my experience on one tcr and one Liv I've installed. So not a negative in this case.. other brands moved to threaded maybe because they struggled to make two round holes! 🤣
