Security is tough to get into and will take patience and time. Clear your schedule to learn ethical hacking. It’s a rabbit hole. Fun but a rabbit hole. Great video David! After getting hurt at work a couple of weeks ago I've come to the realization that my days as a delivery driver are numbered so after seeing this video I've really developed an interest in Ethical Hacking/Pen Testing. I started an Ethical Hacking course on Udemy and so far I've really enjoyed it and I'll be switching careers hopefully sooner rather than later. At 48 it's a bit scary switching up careers but based on what I'm learning so far I'm really enjoying it. I too was Homeschooled as a teenager, and loved every minute of it because I learned HOW TO MASTER Linux, Adobe, Navigate through Microsoft windows on all sorts, get into APPLE, etc. All of this was taught to me via my dad, and a few family members in the U.S. Government/U.S. Military via my dad's side of the family. Hi Joel, If you are not sure which path to get hook. Try be at least good in DevOps at least. Then you can start slowly choose path. if you choose directly without knowing things you are just become a script kiddies. And now in 2023…all the job postings I am seeing are needing at minimum a bachelors degree + certs like the CCNA, CompTIA A+, Security+ all in lieu of experience and even with experience. I am a product designer looking to switch to cybersecurity. Built a career over 20 years, worked at Google, Dell, Verizon, Gartner to name a few and am over it and want to do something that truly matters in this world. But there are some excellent points and great advice in this video. Definitely building a home lab. Going back to school for my Bachelors in Cybersecurity. Getting my Certs. Listening to podcasts and videos every day, am learning on HTB and THM and am going to do CFT’s and bug bounties when I feel ready. But channels like David’s are really motivating me that I can do this!

I just looked at jobs today in cybersecurity in Seattle. Every one of them, from entry level to advanced, required a four year degree. Don’t lie to people, please. At the end of the day, you will benefit from a degree in the long run, but also in the interview process. The recruiter puts you on top as a result. Those that don’t have degrees, need certs and qualifications.

@Daniel the Maniel Because you have more job security and you learn from teachers. And i live in the Netherlands, if you're a student here you get around 1500 euro's from the goverment to pay for college each year.

@Daniel the Maniel If you work for a company and someone applies for it with a degree, you will most likely get fired. Because you don't have a degree in IT. So in general it is better to have a degree for job security.

Remote options are available for Blue Team, especially since the pandemic. Many businesses are re-thinking the need to be physically in office. The biggest factor of remote options will be depend on your blue team role and experience.

Keep hearing the industry is no longer concerned with degrees - and there are people with degrees who can’t even land a job. I have A+, Net+ & Sec+ and can’t even get a help desk interview (attending WGU) and have worked as a QA manager for nearly 10 years + security background. IT is hard to get into unless you know someone & it gets even harder when you look for these specialized roles. The learning process alone is non-stop journey & I’m grateful for David & Neal sharing info to help refine my approach.

I'm learning Cybersecurity by passion because I'm blessed enough to speak English (I'm a French speaking native). David Channel is one of best Cybersecurity channel I came across 😊😊😊😊😊😊. So good content for humanity. And this is something that I came to realize, there is a lot of knowledge sharing, team working in Cybersecurity, all these open sources stuffs and I love that. I wish somebody told me and explained me this 23 years ago when I entered the working place!!!! I'm 43 now. Well, it's never too late to embrace what you love and get people safe with these skills. I have an associates degree in computer programming, but that was 18 years ago. Most of my career has been in retail and warehouse work, with alittle IT stuff here and there. I love this field, because it's super complex to get into, It takes sometimes years to understand how to enter, and you think it's simple, I should have known this from the first day, if someone would have told me correctly, and then you try to tell your roadmap to someone, and other person says, "Bro what are you talking, I can't understand a single bit, are you were born genius".

long story short, if you want a cyber security career, it has to be all that you want to do in life. you must have little free time, and all cyber security. thats what hiring managers want, someone who is obsessed with it, not someone who just wants $120k a year. pretty sad... cant wait for AI to take all our jobs

Honestly, bashing HR isn't really fair. HR takes the req's WE give them. We need to do a better job educating the HR folks in what we are looking for.

I think it's fair. An HR person is supposed to hire people in the field they have no clue about based on the requirements provided. How are they supposed to assess the candidate if they have no idea what they are talking about? A questionnaire with hidden scores imho will do a better job than HR
