@@davidbombal It is the cheapest with 7 years of service for the Google Pixel 8. The biggest issue with other roms is the length of security updates. It is hard to find cheap, factory unlocked phones that still receive security updates and will end up be cheaper on an amortized basis. So much so, it is basically impossible. The low level phones like the Motorola Play simply aren't supported by any of the custom ROMs and even if they did, they might have 3 years of support when they come out new, a year left when they are on sale for $150. At that rate, you're better off with a Pixel. Unless, you're just going to use them as a throwaway or a binge drinking phone, in which case, lifespan doesn't matter much anyway, just overall cost. Operating systems like CalyxOS and GrapheneOS make an assumption that I'm personally curious about. Can we trust the hardware that the operating system is being installed on? Super confused, the headline says "Ditch Android and Apple "and then you go on to tell people to install an Android OS.
@mungox1Ай бұрын
yes, you need to stop using iPhone, ditch it
@RA6391322 күн бұрын
no, you're not he's saying, " Ditch android and apple." he's talking about the regular android that tracks everything you do on your phone calyx is based on the open source project of android, which is very different from the android you see on most phones

Android - you should call it Google's android. What about Lineage os? A vanilla lineage OS is better because more devices support it.

Do the banking apps work? Last time I used it, nothing worked.
@pw2l6975 ай бұрын
@@DanSlotea Maybe your banking app depends on Google services. In that case you need to use microG services. What did your Banking app show when launched? Because every case scenario with different apps will need different kind of approach! Leaving Google now days has become very complex thing bcs of dependency of users. You need to have the time to research and have alternatives available. Initially people will struggle!

Thanks for the info but as always, the problem with those OS is the hardware support... Although this is a must have, sadly: Not many devices are supported by those OS

Shouldn't using apps like Facebook, Instagram on a degoogled phone defeat the purpose of privacy?
@davidbombal5 ай бұрын
Some people would agree with you. A lot of this stuff depends on your threat model and your privacy and cybersecurity requirements. Getting rid of all the Google tracking in stock Android is a big step forward. If you want hard core privacy, use Graphene with no social media apps or other apps can that affect your privacy. However, not everyone is ready for that level of hassle. So, this is better than a stock Android and a good start on the privacy journey. Horses for courses as they say in the UK. There is no one size fits all option - you need to decide for yourself.

Facebook, Adobe and my banking app launches countless tracking attempts daily. I don't even have Facebook!! But I cannot install any other ROM, so I use DuckDuckGo to try stop trackers. It has to be enabled manually. Adobe is another not on my phone, yet trying to track me down.

Given the post-Snowden world, it's hard not to think literally everything is consuming our data irrespective of software or even hardware. Like walled-off portions of Intel processors doing things we're not allowed to know about

Depends on your bank. However, to hide the fact that you have a custom ROM you must root your device and set up many things to spoof your device's properties and the fact that you have root. It's not easy and takes quite a bit of effort to both srt up and maintain. However if your banking app works even after installing Calyx, you can consider yourself lucky and just leave it at that

I flashed pixel experience on my redmi note 7 couple years back and i remember I searched through internet if it is safe for me to flash an OS and use my banking apps and UPI. I saw several videos that says UPI won't work in a custom rom ed phone but i tried and i used that phone for another year UPI and banking apps works fine no issues founded. But it stills a doubt for me if it's safe. The phone still works fine and i love the change from MI UI to pixel experience it was wonderful.
