heres a easy way to remember the ratio for bleach.."You must be 21 to drink"! 2 drops of bleach per 1 liter/quart of water.. the US legal drinking age is 21 so its easy to remember also the wait time is 30 mins.. so 2+1=3! Great videos Dave keep them comming!

Dave, I was always under the impression that it is better to strain out the gross particulates no matter what prior to any treatment because the nasties can hide within the bigger particulates safe from chemical treatment and even heat. So for me, that extra step seems logical. Thoughts?

Great video! Like you I always boiled my water whenever it was an option, but unfortunately in the western half of the country campfires are often outlawed which makes it very unpractical to boil all of your water, especially when travelling with a group. The fuel requirements are just too high. The filter that I always used was the MSR Sweetwater which filters down to 0.2 microns. That's small enough to stop pretty much all of the giardia & cryptosporidium. It won't stop some viruses though.

Great summarizing, thanks a lot Dave. As usual I agree, only a minor detail 13:20 I do different if possible: I filter any surface water before I boil it, especially after rains. The reason is that such water may contain small plant particles like little pieces of bark or leaves etc. They may have contents like alkaloids, tannins or resins which are soluble in water at higher temperatures, means especially boiling such things is not suggested if one doesn't want that stuff. rgds, Robert

Good info in that video. Thx Dave. The best advise there is : Take precotion but it's better to be found alive and sick from the water then dead becose you did not drank. I has been in this type of situation where i had to drink, i was lost and in badshape from the heat. I decided to drink green moskito water that was there and no clean water was available. I took a chance but to drink unclean water saved me and gave me the energy to get back to my truck and go home. I was lucky to not get sick.

There is a product out there that I originally bought from cheaper than dirt called the Bugout Bottle. it has a 0.2 micron monolithic filter in it. I have several of them and they work great. I live in AZ and spend quite a bit of time in the mountains. I have used it many times and never gotten sick. They used to be 11 dollars bottle and filter. CTD doesnt have them in stock anymore but I highly recommend them if you can find them. Maybe you can offer them on your website if you can find them.

Hi dave, thanks for your brilliant videos... Got me thinking. If you know your going on a big hike and will need to gather water, and can afford the space in your pack - how about buying another metal bottle, build up layers in it like charcole, find sand, charcoal, grany sand... and then hole in bottom. The other thing youll need is a plastic bag type with dripper. That way got own filtration device and you can hang both in a tree. bag container pours into filter, pours into bottle for boiling?

Good stuff Dave....Thanks. Hey quick question I'm making my own tincture of Iodine from black walnut hulls. First of all, how long should I let my tincture sit to get to proper strength.... and 2nd...when you say 2% tincture of iodine I'm under the impression it means 2% of the 32 ounces. If, when you get time you could elaborate on this or direct me to one of your vids already in existence I'd appreciate it. I 'll keep looking for info on this as well. Take care.

Like you said chemical contaminated waters are something to consider. The Town Creek runs right through my back yard. It should be boilable and drinkable... 2 miles downstream though a factory in the 60s contaminated the creek with PCBs. It flows for miles till it gets to Lake Hartwell. A huge lake, but, it's sediments are so contaminated, that we can't even eat the fish... SAD!!! Thorough explanation as usual. Thanks.

I have two canteens to collect water in and clean it as much as possible. One canteen has a tube to collect it and a bag to store it in. The filter in the canteen will remove the common contaminants and I have drank water from a moving stream before and it tasted sort of sweet and was nice and filled my thirst. I have tried to stay away from stagnant water sources due to the problems of more contaminants.

7Nampan, the idea for moving water collection is look at how a gold sluice box works, Water flowing over the edges of rocks or whatever causes the heavier objects to sink. Still water will allow objects to float just under the surface, bug larvae, dead animal parts, you name it.

Dave, search for the "Home Made PVC Water Filter" youtube video by Colhane. I made a few of these and was wondering what you think of them. Basically a pvc pipe filled with activated charcoal, fish tank filter material and screen on the ends. I would still plan on pre-filtering, and boiling/chem treating post but overall seems like a very neat DIY and CHEAP way to make a good filter yourself.

So i have a 1 litre stainless steel water bottle.Which is alil bigger then a quart. I was thinking of using chorox bleach. It takes 2 drops per quart or liter and you wait 30 mins. They also say it should have a lil hint of chlorine taste, that way you know you have used enough. To be honest i have never purified water besides boiling, but that was my back up plan. Great video, and i have one other idea, i may make a vid on, so will reveal at another time . take care Dave

What about solar disinfection? You can always carry a transparent container to use the sun to disinfect the water. This works even in winter as the disinfection relies on the amount of UV radiation absorbed by the bacteria rather than heat. The only problem i can see is that it takes between 6 to 48 hours of exposure but it beats most other methods, especially the chemical ones.

Interesting presentation of common sense. Personally I take 3 water containers. 1 for boiling, one for taking the boiled water after it has cooled and a "bulk bag" type water bag that can take 15 liters. Would take you all day to fill it using the boil method but 15 liters is enough for 5 days in a cool climate. Then again I tend to carry a bit more than is strictly needed.

Make sure that if you don't have a stainless bottle but a Nalgene bottle that you don't collect contaminated water in your bottle, pour it in a pot to boil it, then pour the disinfected water back into your contaminated bottle. Instead, collect the water in your camp pot that you intend to boil it in.With that said, a stainless bottle is brilliant. Will a water filter screw on to Pathfinder 32 oz. Bottle?

the main reason I like the 34 oz bottle is that it is 1 liter and the decontamination tabs I use are measured for 1 liter. They work just fine for a quart bottle but the chemical taste isn't as strong with a full liter.
