Dave, really appreciate your input on the H&R shotguns. I have 3 of them in different gauges and have used them since my youth. I still prefer them along with my NEF single shot rifles and Rossi's. I grew up reading about the Ohio and Kaintuck "dark and bloody ground" frontiers and there is just something so appealing about the simplicity and heritage of single shot firearms.Knowing I now have blackpowder capability is tremendous. You are a frontiersman and a great American.

In my NEF single, I have a home-made push button latch installed so I can do the same buttstock trick. I drilled two extra holes in the butt, in one I keep a six inch long rifled chamber adapter for 9mm, and between the other two holes, I keep sixty rounds of 9mm, 115gr hollow point ammo for emergencies. The cordage sling is a great idea - you never know when that will come in handy.

Just watched this video, very useful information. I just removed my butt plate off my NEF 12 gauge 3 1/2 mag and found out that 3 2 3/4 inch shells fit comfortably completely inside the hole, and was able to put cleaning patches in as well. Thanks Dave for the information.

I love incorporating hemp back into my firearms. Its seed oil is also FANTASTIC for your wood stocks. Beautiful work you have done with yours, I have the long barrel full choke 12g model. Now I need to find a hunting spot in Ohio where I can hunt lawfully.

I have stored in my H&R butstock the following. A .410 adapter with one .410 slug round and two number four .410 rounds, a .22 adapter with 18 rounds of .22lr, a ferro rod, a wetfire tinder and a small three blade pocket knife, some cotton material in between the adapters that can be used for charcloth.

Many people grossly undervalue the single shot shotgun. It's an absolutely amazing tool used properly and still light to carry. Too many people damand a multi shot with all the tacked out toys without realizing that's a pain to carry and unnecessary. Dave shows his real-world practical skills by focusing on the simple single and taking it up a notch. And so affordable. My grandad got a single 16 and kept his family fed with it. I still have his. it's over 100 yrs old and still fetching birds :)

Bought my H&R 12 GA today at the gunshow in Orlando. I had already seen all your related videos, so it was an easy choice. The existing hole was wide enough for shells to go all the way in so I put two 00 buck and one slug down there. Can't wait for my next day off.

Hey Dave I also put a Small fishing kit in the grip of my Glock 23. Glocks have the cavity behind the mag well and I had already purchased the plug for it to keep it in there. Excellent idea for doing that with the Shotgun. Thanks for the information and all the ideas

Just stumbled upon your channel, definitely a new subscriber here. On mine, I took the original butt plate off and changed it out for an A2 butt plate to have the trap door access, and i made a cleaning kit for it. I am definitely going to have to throw in that extra shell in there now. Such an amazingly clever idea.

only thing I would do is that center hole for that stock is as long as the stock and get's bigger the closer to the barrel. I would throw a lighter and ferol rod down that and some sort of tinder capsul and put a .22 adapter there, make a square hole for a 50rnd box of .22, then a "last shot" hole.That center hole is longer then anyone think's don't waste the space...Just my thought's on modifying the stock. Awsome vid Dave Keep doing what you do and thank's for the knowledge you give us

a section of collapseable automobile radio antennae makes a pretty slick quick loader for .22 LR in a tube magazine. It would also make a good storeage tube for extra primer caps that you could store in another hole under the buttstock cover. Or a short section of 1/4 ID copper tubing would probably work also.

You Cant Beat An H&R Ive Got a bunch of pump and semi auto shotguns but i always end up grabbing my H&R single shot 12 gauge. Theres just something about that gun that makes me feel prouder when taking a shot at a game animal or a pop can than using a semi auto benelli or an 870 wingmaster. keep it up Dave

I did something similar with my 410, I hollowed out the stock and reinforced it with epoxy. Now it has room for 5 410 shells, fire kit, fishing kit, and 1st aid.

On a Mossberg 22 with synthetic stock I used slotted screws in the buttstock and taped a dime to the stock with duct tape. the dime works to unscrew the buttstock end cap and it's virtually loss proof and the duct tape burns well if I need some tinder.

Your videos inspired me to buy my own H&R 12 gauge single shot (I have the Topper model 88) and I found that I can slide 2 to 3 shells in the buttstock if I put them in primer first (so the shot is facing the butt plate). I also found that it's a great gun especially for under $100!

@wildernessoutfitters Dave, ditch the screw on plate and put a Limbsaver or other slip-on recoil pad on there. It’ll hold your gear in the stock, it should keep the water out (if it fits snug as it should) and allow access without the need of a screwdriver.

Thank you for the video. I like the idea of the sling having multiple uses. I will re-evaluate my sling systems. Most all my shotguns & rifles have butt stock & some with fore grip survival kits in them. Each one is marked with white paint for easy identification of which hold kits. My thoughts on the "extra" shell in the large hole; is that my last shot is always ready in the "barrel". It's never empty. I would take advantage of that large hole for extra items.

Hey Dave, I've had an NEF for years, and it has space for three 3inch shells plus a little. Seems like the space should be deep enough on yours that if you make the hole just a touch larger the shells should slide all the way in. I have mine loaded with a spare #6 shot and a slug. The 3rd space is used by a small kit that fits in a used hull with wetfire, sparklite, waterproof matches, fishhook and line, single wrapped water purification tablets, aspirin and pepto. Keep up the great vids!
@YankeeWoodcraft
@YankeeWoodcraft 8 жыл бұрын
Dave, Instead of having to rely on a tool to access the stock's butt for my NEF, I'm going to try to use either thumb screws or something known as a "camera handle screw" which is smaller than the thumb screw at a low profile. It has a fold-down toggle on it and can still be opened with a standard screwdriver as it is also slotted.

Maybe a combination sling with leather and hemp/paracord would also work fine but a bit more fiddly to make.The leather could be used as a strop with the paracord there for obvious uses.I 'm loving this series!

They make screws and bolts that can be used with BOTH Phillips and Slotted screwdrivers. One set of the Phillips slots or 'x' is cut longer for use with the slotted screwdriver ... best (or worst) of both worlds.

Really great ideas! If you thought it necessary or beneficial to increase your shell storage to 2 or 3 rounds, you could always slightly enlarge the stock bolt access hole by an 1/8" with a spade bit and a drill. Just enough to fit the rim of the shell in without substantially weakening the stock. Still, one shot is enough for getting food if ammo is forgotten at camp or lost.

Great idea. I was thinking of cutting a hole in the side of my .22 stock and fitting it with some type of door to store a box of ammo and a fire kit. But as I,m not very confident of doing a good job, it hasn't been done yet. Thanks.

That's some good thinkin man. Nice practical additions that could be very valuable. What's next? 2 fishing pole eye's for shotgun sights front n back & a reel in the stock & a pull out fishing rod tip so you can use it for fishing? lol ... just playin around, those were great practical mods you did. Even really like that rugged look on the sling.

Choate Stocks makes a hollow stock and fore end for the H&R shotguns and rifles specifically for storing equipment. It is exactly the same stock that is used in the H&R survivor line of firearms. The stock be found at midwayusa for about $35. It would make a nice addition to you H&R woodsman/survival weapon project if you don't mind that it is made from composite. It also has a thumb screw to access the compartment so you don't need you leatherman to remove the butt plate screws.

Dave, I have done the same, adding a few rounds to my single shot 16 guage. But my modification differs from yours in that I bought a rubber recoil pad that slips over the entire but-stock. This allows me to leave the original but plate off and the rubber cap fits on by friction eliminating the need for a screwdriver. To access the needed shell you simply slide the friction fit but-pad off the stock and you have gained access. Give it a try see if it works for you and keep up the great videos

@wildernesseducation I have the H&R Survivor in .410/.45 Colt and I agree the Choate stocks while ugly as sin are great for storage. I carry 8 rounds assorted .410 and 8 rounds .45 colt in the forend alone and compared to the few holes one could drill in a wood stock the Choate buttstock is absolutely cavernous. Do what you can with the wood stock if that’s what you have but IMHO for a modest investment the Choate stocks are the way to go.

Hey Dave, I have an NEF Pardner SB1. I made a mod that I think you would enjoy. I replaced the screw on the front stock with a nut and a piece of metal so that I can loosen and tighten that nut by hand instead of using my multi-tool. Makes it easier to break down in case I need to take it apart without tools. Also, my butt stock holds three shells without having been modified. I thought that was kind of weird since NEF and H&R are the same company. You would think they would be the same.

I used to own an H&R Pardner 12 gauge. 28" barrel w/ fixed modified choke. I bought it at Wal-Mart & I was able to fit 3, 3" 12 gauge shells in the stock bolt hole. I'm curious as to why only one shell fits in yours? I bought my Pardner in 2006. Just thought I'd share that with you.

also, you could add a wing nut and a piece of threaded rod to replace the front stock screw, making disassembly easier. this is why I like the Rossi shotguns and matched sets better, faster disassembly with the threaded front sling mount acting as the disassembly option.

Hey Dave, love this series. Try making a small knife out of a hacksaw blade and stash it under a ranger band around the stock or add it to the sling.Use it for removing the butt plate screw and what ever else. Its not an ideal blade by any means but, in a pinch these little blades could help out a lot. You can also use as a striker, notching tool, small spear head, and maybe even a knife. Just an idea.

How about a couple of drywall inserts with screws in them instead of the stock screws? Pick the right size for a snug friction fit and you could keep spares in the stock screw hole. Then attach a length of small but strong steel cable or cord to the inserts on the inside of the buttplate. Also cut 2 slots in the back edge of the butt to allow the cable / cord to pass through, preserving the fit of the buttplate. A quick pull of the cable pops the buttplate off with no tools. Press back on.

That surefire kit you could wrap it in cling wrap (like lil cacoon) and then dip in bees wax or parafin wax to water proof.--------For your gunstock wood maybe a beeswax, boiled linseed and tupentine mix. It was the formula they used on the m1garands to seal the wood. fyi look at: dotthegunstockdoctordot

is there much room in front of the shell? you could add bbs in front of the shell and also drill another hole next to the rod and store a few primers and instead of the wet fire you could add some powder. then you have one shot in the shell and one or more shots you could make from the spent shell and whats in the stock.

good thinking dave! if you could only bring 1 shot size for that 12 gauge what would it be? buck shot and slgs are great on large game but almsot pointless on small game. and smaller shot is great but a turkey would most likley be your biggest kill. so what size would you want to take and why? personally id take #4 shot. good for squirrels, rabbits birds and turkey. as i think it would be more practicle to hunt for small game than large in a situation. what do you think?
