I'm glad you showed thoses knots, it's very close to how i tie my stuff, I see vids all over youtube with all these specialized knots to do this, I was a Boy Scout for many years and can tie just about any knot out there but why would you when there are easier ways, Thanks again Dave you are the best by FAR!
@TBOR10112 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of the large offset hood that could be used as a vent once the poncho was being used as a tarp. I have used my poncho in this manner when it rained and wanted a small cooking fire under it, but it will drip in some water much like the tipi/ teepee. Once again Dave and his people have taken something and improved on the concept and made it better. Excellent work Mr.Canterbury.

A sell out? Dave is as commited as he ever was to providing survival videos and information. Just because he is releasing products doesnt mean he is a sell out. It means he has come up with clever ideas and wants to make them available to the common man. I commend him for it and he will always have my support. Keep it up Dave

Nice job on the design Dave. I see you can use the envelope & the hood for storage at the same time too. I've been using the same knots for years, great, simple way to have a tight system. The bungee cords are great in high wind to protect your system as well.

Dave, with the hood, If you opened the velcro flap and it was raining you could catch water in it for another water source. Another great Video and product!!! Keep them coming.
@sticknstonesbrkbones12 жыл бұрын
Those bungees look like they would make a pretty good pair of suspenders, and could also be used to keep the poncho from waving around like a cape if wrapped around your waist like a belt over the poncho. Cool stuff Dave

"Journal of the tarp" HA! Dave I can't imagine why people give you grief. You are doing a fantastic work and I wish you had a thousand KZbins. Your tarp/poncho is clearly a Superior product and as soon as I can afford it I am buying one. I have bought other things from your store and everything is of the highest quality & always delivered promptly. Forget political correctness and smoke a big cigar in your next video ;) Thanks for all you do.

looks like a nice little tarp, love the idea of being able to use the hood and envelope as a pocket. Could poppers be used instead of velcro? they wouldnt have to take any weight or strain and 3 or four down each side should do the job? real neat way to tie your ridge knots as well.

Hey Dave, awesome design. +1 on the different color ridgeline tie outs. Anything that saves a second or two when you're getting wet is a bonus.

they're in Norwegian kroner. "jerven duken" is more or less a deluxe emergency blanket, with modifications so it can be used as a tarp, poncho etc. all of them have a alu liner to trap heat, but some of them also have insulation to give extra heat and to deal with the condensation. It's original purpose was as a emergency shelter in the norwegian mountains when you can't or won't make a snow cave. I recommend the thermo hunter. It probably saved my toes in the military.

This is a very well thought out poncho; I like it! Dave, maybe you have said this somewhere before, but I have always wondered why you use a wool blanket for sleeping rather than a synthetic filled sleeping bag (filled with a material that will still keep you warm when wet, unlike down)? I would think a good wool blanket would be much heavier than a high-tech synthetic filled sleeping bag.

Good to know Dave. Im in need of a tarp. You guys should incorporate a bug net into the next revision for us Florida boys. A good YKK zipper wouldn't work better than the Velcro? Thinking zip off hood.

Mr.C,with all the critters on the ground in Arkansas... like skunks, cottonmouth,copperhead,scorpions and rattlesnakes.And all the pesky flying critters,skeeters,wasps, and parachuting ticks the size of oil tankers, I've been seriously thinking about getting a hammock. Would love to see a video about your thoughts on hammocks,Advantages,disadvantages,size,styles, and any cool tips and tricks you could pass along. For an old disabled vet like me,could be a comfortable way to go. Thanks, Chucker

This is awesome Dave! I have been struggling with a large tarp- I think about multiple people, etc, etc. I'm going to have to try the same material but larger. Definitely broadcast when this is on the store- I will definitely be buying!
@Echo4PapaBravo12 жыл бұрын
I envy all the time you get to spend in "the peacefulness". You're right about spending money on things that can save your life. Tarps are more or less just emergency items for me. Ideally, I prefer using natural materials for shelters and find building them part of the fun of being out there. How do these compare to canvass for weight/durability? If its something I'd only have to buy once I might be able to justify the cost of it. Thanks for all you do, bro, you inspire.
@MikeWareoffthebeatenpath12 жыл бұрын
Point taken my friend, I have seen some ABS stakes laying around at some camp sites that have broken. But as we know it's better to have metal or ABS stakes when we need a stake in a hurry. Than running around looking for something to carve.
@TBOR10112 жыл бұрын
I suggest to all, take a week long trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. It will be a great vacation and you'll learn real quick how far cheap equipment will get you, especially tarps. You'll be camping in some of the most scenic areas in the country and where a single windstorm off Lake Superior will shred those blue taffeta tarps.
@pumile081212 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. As a tarp/shelter-option I would say Dave's tarp is not to beat - great size, very good materials (as it looks like) and that all for a good price! I was looking for tarps in Norway, but I couldn't find something similar, although we have tarps from Hilleberg and Helsport. But they are either made of PU, or are VERY expensive and don't have the traditional tarp shape (which I prefer). So I guess there is only one thing to do - getting an import from the U.S. ;-)

Alot of folks prefer the plastic stakes, They hold in ground better, He mentions they are useful for diging as well. Have seen them used as spear point as well on a stick. I carried the metals one for a long time and switched over to the plastics for durabilty. They dont bend over in rocky terrain, Don't come flying out as fast when rain comes in and wind picks up. But not sure why he uses the other than preference.

@wildernessoutfitters Would there be any ill effects of creating a vent hood (as mentioned by TBOR101) much like most beach umbrellas nowadays that would allow a gust to just blow right out the top of a tarp rather than catching it like a sail? It works really well down here in Florida along the coast; we no longer have to worry about projectile umbrella missiles flying down A1A.

Also, I would love to get one of these, except I live in Pennsylvania, where the woods are known for two things, rocks and prickers. I can already see it, rip a bunch of little holes in it while traipsing around all day, only to have them leak on me at night. I guess I'll just have to settle for having one of each in my pack.
@phrankus200912 жыл бұрын
Well, it certainly is worth the weight. Much more practical than the 5x7 "traditional" job that you showed to us. Is is worth the cost ? (no mention of price)... ALSO ... You are something of a Hammock Guy ... Right ? ... So, I am wonderring what the diagonal measure is ... seems like it would be adequate for a Singlenest type hammock, in the FLYING DIAMOND configuration, IF is was low enough to the hammock. Would like to see the coverage. I can calculate the diagonal measure, myself.

Dave, don't even pay attention to people like this. I know it must be hard to be a righteous person and resist the urge to defend yourself, but, ultimately people like this are ignorant or the way life works and irrelevant to the big picture. By responding, you only give their words undue attention. You keep doing your thing, brother. With almost 80,000 subscribers and 20 million views, you have nothing to prove to the trolls.

Ouch! We're getting into Yuppy camping when you start talking about just the tarp costing $100+. Looks like a great product, but I think I'm gonna stick with my $5 wallyworld 8x8 tarp and a $5 poncho. I can conceivably buy 10 (with tax) of each for the price of this single tarp before shipping. I'm all for great products, but I consider camping and survival pretty low budget. I'd rather spend the money I save on a good blade and ammo.

I am going to have to talk myself into getting one of these. Most ponchos are not made for me, a 6'1" man with a 52 inch chest. This looks like it could accomodate me and I'd still have room for a large ALICE pack under it.
