This man is the woodsman's lore incarnate - the skills, the craft, the spirit, the heart! Next weekend I'll be doing my first fly fishing this season. If I have half the blast D.C. is having in this video, then it'll already be the greatest time ever.

Dave enjoyed your video on the 18th Century Style of fishing, I didn't know in the late 50's & 60's that's how they fished, but that is exactly how My grandparents fished. They taught me how to fish when I was a kid. The bait they would use was big old earthworms that they dug up from the cow pen. Caught every kind of fish there was, in later years I give up on worms after those pesty perch & turtles as they had a never ending fondness for worms. I changed to flies. Great times then.

That pond seems to have a LOT of fairly small fish. My college Fisheries Management instructor said the way to get bigger fish in a small pond is to fish the hell out of it and not toss the little ones back. They are probably overpopulated. You can put the tiny ones on your garden for fertilizer and eat the bigger ones. You will never fish it out with rod and reel. There will be more food for the remaining fish, and they will get bigger. It looks like you're having a lot of fun! Great video!

Dave I have a book that may come in handy for some of those beginning knot tiers. I have a book from back when I was in boy scouts called, "knots and how to tie them." It describes rope development, Making rope, whipping, caring for rope, end knots, knots for joining, tying ropes to objects, knots for loops, other useful knots, splicing, and lashings. I know it has helped me out greatly and thought it may help out other viewers.

We use #36 tarred bank line for trot lines. Have found just 4 hooks over night makes for a good catfish fry... unless a snapping turtle happens to take the bait. Then it gets interesting.

You might be surprised where you can get bamboo to grow, it's almost invasive and grows easily in even temperate climates.

There's no doubt the pond is stockpiled with fish and it stunted the growth. But that being said there's a ton of fish to be had!! That's a great spot to take Layla bug to :-) she would have a blast catching all those pan fish! It's great to see u so excited about fishing Dave!!

Again Dave brings back memories. Never really thought about it until now but back then catching all the little fish was more fun than catching the bigger fish now. Thank you for all of your videos and time you put into them. I do have a question though. I am going to make my own tarp so I can set it up the way I want. My question is what material would you use? I have thought about either canvas, silnylon, maybe even waterproof cordura.

Mono is good for things that float. If you're going underwater/sinking Fluorocarbon is the bomb- fish can't see it even in gin clear water. We have several reservoirs here in San Diego where you can see 30+ feet and fluoro is just about the only way to get 'em. Wish we could go Bass fishin' when I come out next week for Advanced Class! (hint, hint)

if people are planning on pole fishing, they should have two of them, one like yours at 12+ feet and one at your height, 5-6 feet, ect. this allows you to select a pole for a need. if you're creek fishing, use the short pole, if pod or lake fishing, use the long pole. having a extendable purpose made pole like your B&M black widow would also suffice.

Kind of off topic, but that wouldn't be a Bankline Bracelet, would it? If it isn't, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with one (if they haven't already). Have a bunch of dried bamboo in the back. Seems ,like I'll have another project for it. Thanks Dave.

I experienced the same thing years ago. Small pond where they were stunted and overpopulated. Fish would hit anything, even a bare hook. Didn't even really need a pole. We nearly filled up a small boat, then dumped them on land for the critters in hoping to restore the ecosystem. Too small to clean and eat. Whoever owned it put the word out they wanted people to come and reduce the population.
