“There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes.” Personally, for me, a radio that is less than $200 with many of the features of both CB and amateur radio is still a better deal!

These are meant to be purchased and then modified to transmit on the 11m band, so that you can operate with higher power than the legal limit. This is why it is still channelized. There are tons of radios like this on the market. RB is Roger Beep.

Yup. It’s a very simple solder mod and some have a password that you can use to unlock the radio.

"Methinks thou dost protest too much." I found the radio easy to tune and a the rcvr w/noise reduction quite nice. (My ears are used to my Elecraft radios and my current mainstay is a FTDX101MP.) For $177 it works just fine. Comparing it with a $500± Xiegu G90 is simply apples to oranges. As for its CB lineage, etc., the Retevis PR rep, Inés, simply spoke what's been unspoken for years. The most popular CB radio nowadays is... The IC-7300. Not because any governing body says so, but because the consumers say so. In the 80s, I'm pretty sure that Yaesu knew that licensed ham radio ops were NOT the only demographic purchasing the FT-757GX. Retevis just put it out there. My take? For $177, it's a good buy. Just stay on 10m.

Slightly off topic, but I've learned that I can't really use my FT5DR safely while driving. And I've been wondering if the higher end, menu-driven radios are really any better.

From what I have seen online and elsewhere, these sorts of "10-meter" radios that can be easily configured for "11-meters" are used more by CB'ers (for the extra transmit power, wink-wink) than by hams. Might not be something that is supposed to be said out loud, but it seems to be the case. Hence why there are those "CB-centric" features.

Exactly, made for free-bander CBers. Not a good ham radio.

Hi Dave , Great Review I myself don't like that radio being that you have to fiddle around with more than 1 or 2 knobs to tune not alone from switches , I Love my President HR-2510 it tunes much easier on 10m and it is great for POTA also ,have already used it for that Once and plan for more next season . I don't know if your title is wrong or something but 100 instead of 10 Meter was an eyecatcher ,LOL 73 KC1USS Bob in Eastern Mass

Those radios are marketed towards cb users as they are easily converted

Personally I'm liking my anytone 6666pro. 10,12,15 meter radio. Yes it's set up much like cb but has vfo and operates like an amateur radio. If ya like channelized like cb it has that. I use vfo mode no eco or dang Rodger beep. The hs 4 I have no interest in.

A lot of people in groups on Reddit and Facebook are talking about a radio called Qodosen DX-286. I’m wondering if you might interested in doing a review of it for people? 🙂

This radio has zero noise filtering which effects the receive. Exhausting trying to clarify using 2 knobs. Overall I would not purchase because of the poor noise rejection.

Got one myself, and functional on 11 meter.yes it is. Your statement was false. It doesn't only operate on 10meter. 3 knobs no big deal..you never heard of cobra cb or stryker ?way more than 3 knobs to operate. Folks still doing it. Yall might need some more practice or just stay home 😂😂😂 Research research research 🤦
