This album is a hodge-podge - the first side are songs from their Magical Mystery Tour TV project, while the second side is entirely composed of previously released singles. * It's funny - when John first brought in I Am the Walrus and played it on guitar for the other Beatles and George Martin, it was George Martin said, "John, what am I supposed to do with that? It's mostly two notes, with a meandering chorus!" * With Strawberry Fields Forever, John and the technicians did 26 takes, with john being dissatisfied with each one. It was a technician who spliced the softer take 7 with the harder take 26, creating a splice so perfect John listened to it 8 times in a row, and then said, "Brilliant.". * The song also showcases one of the problems John had with Paul. John had worked on Strawberry Fields Forever for weeks struggling to create it before bringing it in and playing it for the others. Paul said, "Hey, that's brilliant - adding all our places from when we were kids". THE VERY NEXT DAY Paul strolled in and had a fully worked out, complete version of Penny Lane. John felt like he had to work to get his music out, while to Paul it seemed to just happen. * For All You Need is Love the Beatles got their asses sued off for using a tiny clip from the start of Glen Miller's In The Mood (a bit of which can be heard at the 17:20 mark) and had to pay a huge claim for it. * As for John and Paul as songwriters, John could add heart and a soul to a song like no one else, whereas Paul was the king of writing earworms and catchy tunes. This is why when they were writing together they were unstoppable.

Not only that, but Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever were two of the first songs recorded for the SGT PEPPER album, but yanked when they were released as a single prior to PEPPER's release.

John could write gorgeous melodies too. And to call Paul's songs "catchy earworms" really doesn't do him justice. His stuff was not just catchy. At least while he was with the Beatles, it was f'ing gorgeous, and he could write those beauties practically at will! It was amazing. Above all, though, it seems to have been the melodic chemistry between Paul and John that made the Beatles. When they separated, Paul and John solo to me weren't one-tenth as pleasant to listen to as when they were together.

MMT was released worldwide as a double EP. But since EP's (four song singles) weren't big in the U.S., Capitol records turned it into an album by filling out side two with previously released singles. The best idea they ever had. It became a standard album ever since, even when their catalog was put on CD.

One thing I like about Penny Lane is the extremely subtle key changes. The verses are in B, but the choruses are in A - except for the last chorus where the song transposes back to B for the typical key change "lift" effect. I didn't even notice the key changes between the verse and chorus before I saw sheet music for the song, it just seems so seamless.

Lennon's songs have a unique way of connecting with people. He was an extraordinary figure, especially in the 60s-a true rebel, yet highly intelligent and remarkably brave (watch some of this interviews). His authenticity, aggressiveness and honesty makes some people uncomfortable, but it´s a great quality to have as an artist. His solo album Plastic Ono Band is one of the rawest album ever made. Just pure unpolished unpretentious expression.

I’ve really been enjoying your Beatles reactions! The only thing that I would suggest is maybe pulling up the track personnel details prior to listening? Each of the Beatles sang on at least one song per album (it can be difficult for new listeners to differentiate!), and they often play different instruments. This might be especially helpful for the White Album. Prepare to have your mind blown lol

I heard the story behind I Am The Walrus is John Lennon received a letter from a young fan who mentioned that every time a Beetles song came out his teacher insisted on meticulously overanalysing the lyrics. so John decided to write the most nonsensical song possible just because it amused him to imagine this secondary school teacher trying to decipher the absolute gibberish

Genuinely surprised at your take on Penny Lane -- it's one of my absolute favorites. There's a story about the trumpet -- they tried bassoons on the solo and didn't like it. Paul had seen/heard a concert of the London Symphony Orchestra with a guy playing a piccolo trumpet and he told George Martin "I want that!" and they literally rung up David Mason, who had played the concert, to come and do it.

Oasis did a cover of I am the walrus, which is on Definitely maybe, might be why it sounded familiar. Also, Baby you’re a rich man was used at the end of The social network. I had a feeling you were gonna dig Blue jay way, and you did not disappoint!! You should seriously watch the videos they did for “Blue jay way” and “I am the walrus” which are video clips from their movie, it’s like a fever dream, very surrealistic, very David Lynch, it’s like their music translating in the visual form, abstract art. You were also spot on on the white album, it’s exactly what it was meant to be, more stripped down, and it’s genius. How do you follow up Sgt pepper and MMT? If you keep doing the same thing over and over, it’d be boring, and they decided to go in the opposite direction. This also coincided with their trip to India and their study of transcendental meditation, just to give you a bit of context before getting into it. I’m very curious about your thoughts on it, probably their most unhinged album.

Funny story about I Am The Walrus: Lennon would occasionally demo a new song for producer George Martin to give him a basic idea of the songs structure. When he sang the line, "Boy, you've been a naughty girl, you let your knickers down," Martin turned to one of his associates in disbelief and asked, "Did he just say what I think he said?" Because of that line, the song was banned from airplay by the BBC.

"I feel like that track is a great representation of what The Beatles do best, it's catchy but abstract at the same time." THIS! This is a perfect summary, and I couldn't agree more. The Beatles were masters at balancing the elements that defined the late 1960s: catchy pop-rock songwriting, relatable lyrics, and psychedelia. While many bands excelled in one of these areas, very few managed to incorporate all these elements effectively. This is why The Beatles were beloved by almost every generation in the 60's and consistently get featured on numerous 'greatest' lists to this day.

Magical Mystery Tour (the song) is loosely based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Also, astute observation on MMT feeling like the comedown of a trip. Revolver is like the come-up, peppers is the peak, and mmt is the comedown. As someone who has tripped to The Beatles a dozen+ times, this is very accurate! My favorite is starting Rubber Soul and taking my acid or shrooms, then having it really kick into gear with Revolver, and be in the sky with diamonds during Pepper’s. White Album might be my favorite Beatles album to trip to though-it feels like you’re exploring a lush, detailed fantasy world.

@Y-two-K Күн бұрын
@@johnp515sort of, Tomorrow Never Knows was based on the Timothy Leary book about the psychedelic experience which was based on the book of the dead, the line “dying to take you away” in MMT is about the book of the dead too. Here’s what Paul said: “Because those were psychedelic times it had to become a magical mystery tour, a little bit more surreal than the real ones to give us a licence to do it. But it employs all the circus and fairground barkers, ‘Roll up! Roll up!’, which was also a reference to rolling up a joint. We were always sticking those little things in that we knew our friends would get; veiled references to drugs and to trips. ‘Magical Mystery Tour is waiting to take you away,’ so that’s a kind of drug, ‘it’s dying to take you away’ so that’s a Tibetan Book of the Dead reference. We put all these words in and if you were just an ordinary person, it’s a nice bus that’s waiting to take you away, but if you’re tripping, it’s dying, it’s the real tour, the real magical mystery tour. We stuck all that stuff in for our ‘in group’ of friends really.”

This was my first Beatles album as a kid in the 60's. Strawberry Fields forever is my favorite song by my favorite band. Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields were a single released earlier in 1967. They were the first two tracks recorded for the Sgt Pepper album, but the Beatles would not be touring, and probably not release Sgt Pepper until summer. By January 1967, it had been almost 6 months since the Beatles had released Revolver. The record company released a Best of the Beatles album in England in late November, aimed at Christmas, to keep the Beatles in the public eye and also, of course, get sales. It had some songs that had not appeared on any album before then, but only on EP and singles. The company felt that the Beatles needed a single out earlier then next summer so they released Penny Lane/Strawberry fields in February as a double A-Side to hold things over. These two were added to Magical Mystery Tour to fill up the album. Magical Mystery Tour was a BBC special that the Beatles made and released after Christmas in 1967. The album was a kind of soundtrack and collection of singles, including 'All You Ned is Love/Baby Your a Rich Man', 'Hello Goodbye/I Am the Walrus', and 'Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields,' that had been released in 1967.

My first encounter with your first reactions. I enjoyed your takes on the MMT tracks. Since you appear to be going chronologically through the Beatles albums, I'll point out that I've noticed first-time reactors often miss more than 30 Beatles songs that were originally released as singles (45 rpm vinyl.) Since the Beatles (mostly) made a point of not placing songs that had already been released as singles on their albums, not to sell the same songs twice, after the band broke up, these songs were collected on a double album called Past Masters (or Mono Masters.) Thirty is a lot of Beatles songs to forget about, and many are gems you won't want to miss, some among their best songs, especially on the second disc. One other point. The original Yellow Submarine soundtrack album has only 4 new Beatles songs on it. Many people skip the album because of that, but they are still worth hearing, especially 'Hey Bulldog' and 'It's All Too Much." In any case, if you listen to all the albums plus Past Masters collection you've heard them all !

Not similar to A Hard Day’s Night at all All the songs on AHDN, apart from “Can’t Buy Me Love” were recorded during the same sessions and what were considered the most suitable were used for the movie. . For example, “I’ll Cry Instead” was written by John for the sequence in the field but Richard Lester didnt think it fit and went for Can’t Buy Me Love. On Magical Mystery Tour the second side of the album included songs that predated Sergeant Pepper, something The Beatles themselves would never have dreamed of doing. A Hard Days Night, in contrast, is a legitimate Beatles new album release

The Magical Mystery Tour album is a thrown together mishmash of soundtrack music from their MMT show released on BBC and their singles from 1967. As a cohesive album, you can't really compare it to Pepper or Revolver. But the fact that they released Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and MMT all within a 24 month period is a f'n miracle! No surprise that they were starting to run out of juice. But it didn't take long to recharge their batteries and put out the double White Album a year later.

This isn’t a studio album, it’s a compilation put together by Capitol of the Magical Mystery Tour EP and all the singles (A & B sides) that they released in 1967. The LP wasn’t released in the UK until the 70s. Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were originally intended for Sgt Pepper but were released as a double A-side a few months earlier instead.

Strawberry Fields Forever is comprised of two takes, takes 7 and take 26 (which are both available on KZbin). This can be heard at the second "(take 7) Let me take you down cause I'm (take 26) going to Strawberry Fields". Take 26 was slowed to fit the pitch and tempo of take 7. This, at the time, wasn't as easy as it is now because it was all done on reel to reel tape.

I too am more drawn to John’s songwriting and vocals, but I’ve come to appreciate every member for their own skills and contributions. And mind you, John was so deep in acid at the Peppers-MMT era he almost lost himself to ego death. He could only write a few songs - really just Strawberry Fields (written much earlier, actually), Lucy In the Sky, part of Day In the Life, I Am the Walrus, and All You Need Is Love. He wrote Good Morning and Mr Kite quickly as filler material because otherwise he’d barely have anything on the album. Shows how amazing an artist he was that the filler material is quite good. But once they go to India and he gets off LSD (and soon after into Yoko and Heroin) he really gets busy writing a bunch again. Mostly blues based riffs for the rest of his Beatles days, but some of my favorite stuff. You mentioned you’d do the White Album, you should do Let It Be (or Get Back) and watch the Get Back series as well - it’s really quite good.

Nice summary at the end. Amazing album but I agree it's always seemed more like a collection of songs rather than a cohesive album. But still is an amazing collection of songs. The White Album is my favorite (along with many others who have posted). Looking forward to you discovering and discussing it. Get ready for another 180 from the band that can't stop inventing new genres.

I get how this album is less regarded than the work around it but I have always liked it. Baby You're A Rich Man particularly sticks out to me as one of their top songs. The White Album is going to be interesting! For me it was probably the hardest Beatles album to fall in love with, but I did eventually and now I think it's really fantastic.

This is an underrated album and one of my favorites. The 4th psychedelic album is even more underrated, "Yellow Submarine". However, there are two versions. The first includes the George Martin instrumental score from the animated movie. That's interesting in itself, but the reboot is much better and includes some songs previously released on other albums. Check out the animated film, "Yellow Submarine". It's a blast.

I am very anxious to how you will react with White Album (The Beatles), cause while Sgt Peppers and MMT, both released at 1967, are psychadelic, colorful, happy and experimental, White Album is depressed, monochromatic and very introspective. you can feel how hard was to them record that album, they don't had ideias to what work on it and put it all songs they could put, even unfinished songs edit: on the first two tracks of the white album, there is a transition, so don't skip ;)

2:53 - Dave, don't get mad at me for pointing this out, but Paul's vocals are on The Fool On The Hill, not John's. George's vocals are on Blue Jay Way, and John's vocals are on Strawberry Fields, if you want to compare the voices. 🙂 Hope you feel better, btw.

Ok, I won't kill you ;o) I'm sure everybody remarked, but i can't help it: overall, you underlined the quality of the vocals, attributing them to John when they were Paul's, and then said you connected more with John's tunes ;o) Paul always got the short end of the stick when it came to guessing who was more musically adventurous ("he writes the poppy ballads"), when in fact it was Paul who kept pushing to work, record. It's very obvious on the Get Back documentary series. He seems to be writing non-stop. And we tend to forget that in 66-67, they rarely did actual solo tunes. There were almost always contributions and suggestions from one to the other for the lyrics, music sections or arrangements. The White Album is the one where there are split contributions, before they regrouped for Let It Be and Abbey Road.

Yes, Paul was simultaneously the one into old timey tunes and avant-garde art and music. He pushed the album concepts and the recording tech boundaries the hardest. He also played every damn instrument. Crazy to be the GOAT and underrated.

Another good first take, Dave. As someone else has noted, this is basically a compilation record. Songs from their bizarro TV special from 1967 on side one, and their run of amazing singles in 1967 on side two. Definitely some of the most melodic and bright material from this era, and then Walrus there just to fuck with you. Always a fun thing! I think it’s an underrated record and in some ways is better than Pepper’s as a complete hang, but not near as good as Revolver. Looking forward to what you think of the white album. My mood on it changes almost after every listen.

All you need is love was made for the first international TV production. It was played live on TV. Also this album was not actually an album. It was an Ep. When it was released in America they added a couple of previously released singles(like strawberry fields and penny lane). This is the American version that became the cannon version after a while. That's why it doesn't feel cohesive. This is what genius says about the album: Released in late 1967, Magical Mystery Tour wasn’t quite an album, nor quite an EP. The brainchild of Paul McCartney, it served as the soundtrack to a television film of the same name, a whimsical romp following a motley crew on a mystery coach trip. The UK edition was a unique double EP format, featuring just six songs that reflected the film’s offbeat charm. Across the pond, Capitol Records in the US opted for a full-length LP, adding recent non-album singles like “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” to create a more substantial offering. This US version eventually became the accepted format for CD releases and streaming.
