Also, CGI should be used to supplement practical effects, if ever. That creates some really great effects. Can't remember which movies did this in the past, but I think Jurassic Park: Lost World, Independence Day, and Fifth Element used this pretty well, possibly the 1198 Godzilla movie too.

"Doug, honey... you wouldn't hurt me, would you, sweetheart? Sweetheart, be reasonable. After all, we're married!" [BANG!] "Consider that a divorce!" I think the entire movie happened. There's a couple of scenes that occur where Quaid is nowhere in sight, how does he know they took place? Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Alexia Robinson. Casting Notes Fact: The name written on the passport of the "two weeks" lady arriving on Mars is Priscilla Allen, the real name of the actress. Practical Over CGI Fact: This was one of the last major Hollywood blockbusters to make large-scale use of miniature effects as opposed to CGI. It was also one of the first major Hollywood blockbusters to use CGI (mainly for the scenes involving the X-ray scanner) and have it look good. Hot Stone Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger was so impressed by how much dedication Sharon Stone had in training for her character role, even if they reportedly didn't get along. Stone was later inducted into the Stunt Woman Association as an honorary member. So proud of her physique, Sharon Stone posed nude for 'Playboy' magazine, showing off the buff body she developed in preparation for the movie. Sharon had pumped iron and learned Tae Kwon Do. Nice Quaid Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger noticed that Michael Ironside was constantly on the phone between takes. When he broached the subject with Ironside, he was told that he was phoning his sister and that she was currently suffering from cancer. Arnold immediately brought Michael to his trailer and they had an hour-long, three-way conversation with Ironside's sister about what exercises she should do and what kinds of foods she should be eating. Ironside has never forgotten Schwarzenegger's kindness and neither has his sister.

The movie is based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick called "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale". Dick was one of the greatest authors of the 20th century (I have read all of his works, including the weird stuff at the end). Most of it deals with the nature of reality, and whether you can trust what you think is real really is. He was also quite mad - by the end he believed aliens were beaming ideas into his mind. After his death Hollywood started mining his work: Blade Runner (I believe he was still alive at that time), Minority Report, Total Recall, Screamers, A Scanner Darkly, Paycheck, and others. Ironically, after his death an android version of him was made, which would have been his greatest fear.

Interesting story on how Benny the cab driver (Mel Johnson Jr.) got the part. Since there were so many audition tapes, Verhoeven decided to let his teenage daughters choose, and they picked his. He's actually driving the cab. Because of scheduling, he wound up a few weeks early to the location, so he decided to drive the two steering wheel cabs to get used to them. When everyone else arrived on set, Verhoeven hired stunt drivers to drive them, but the two steering wheel configurations kept causing them to crash, destroying two of the three that were built for the film. Johnson told Verhoeven he could actually drive it, and Arnold said, If Mel's driving, I'll go with him. They nailed it on the first try, and just for good measure, Verhoeven had them nail it again.

Here are a few 80s and 90s Arnie flicks I love that y'all should definitely watch: - Last Action Hero is a lot of fun. I'd call it a fantasy parody movie. Arnie is larger than life, plenty of in-jokes and one-liners, and Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones) steals every scene he's in. - True Lies is a fantastic action/comedy movie pairing Arnie with Jamie Lee Curtis. - The Running Man is a crazy, exciting, sci-fi post-apocayptic movie, with Arnie in top form. - Twins is an adorable family comedy teaming up Arnie and Danny Devito.

As a kid I loved this movie purely for Arnie blowing people away gruesomeness and 1-liners. My favorite thing about this movie now as an adult that I don't think any other movie has been able to replicate is that any of the 3 theories is plausible and doesn't negate the other theories outright. So it's like a Rorschach test whether you believe that 1) the movie is real and played out as you saw it 2) the movie is a dream and the action is his Recall package or 3) he's delusional as explained by the doctor I've always bought the it's real theory the most.

The biggest giveaway (and there are several) is the ending when his eyes, tongue and throat are bulging out…..those organs don’t just go back in and you’re fine. He is lost in his mind….the only interpretation that explains some of the plot goofiness….he sticks a gun up his nose and pulls out a metal marble from his BRAIN!! No after effects…. They push a button and Mars changes from 0 atmosphere to blue skies and easy breathing in 30 seconds….. He is lost and lobotomized…. great story idea

You have already seen "Starship Troopers" the last film in the trilogy, with the most CGI. This film is the middle film. His first film in the trilogy is the original "Robocop' (1987). You should definitely check out this well loved sci-fi classic with impressive practical effects.🏆 I remember when the unrated version was first released on laserdisc. The remake of this film was pretty bad, and should be avoided. Hey, Chandra and Jordan! I saw this in the summer of 1990 at least four times in a theater. It was a smash hit and remains one of Arnold's best films! Director Paul Verhoeven made two other sci-fi blockbusters in the same decade: "Robocop" and "Starship Troopers". Together, with "Total Recall", the trifecta are known as The Dutch Triple. He's also known for a terrific medieval film called "Flesh + Blood", the steamy thriller "Basic Instinct" and a remarkable World War II film about the Dutch Resistance called "Black Book". He infamously directed the cult classic cheesefest "Showgirls", too! This is yet another adaptation of author Phillip K. Dick's prolific output. The original novella was entitled "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale". His stories have been the basis for "Total Recall", "Blade Runner", "Paycheck", "Minority Report", "A Scanner Darkly" and "The Man in the High Castle". All his science fiction involves a shifting sense of identity either literally or figuratively. This movie boosted Sharon Stone into the A-List for awhile for famously kicking Arnold's a$$! Two years later, Verhoeven directed her iconic leg crossing scene in "Basic Instinct" that had all male viewers in a breathless lather! Lol. Three of Arnold's recent films that are excellent include "Collateral Damage", "Escape Plan" and "Sabotage" as well as the fun "Expendables" franchise where he's part of an ensemble of action heroes! A great sci-film with one-liners is "Pitch Black" with Vin Diesel. A fantastic sci-fi epic that, unfortunately, gets little traction is "John Carter" based on the hugely influential Edgar Rice Burroughs classic "A Princess of Mars". I wish people would react to it! It's phenomenal!

This movie reminds me of how Nolan does his films. The ending is suppose to leave you wondering if the whole movie was him just living out his trip during his recall visit or if what was unfolding actually happened. I love how it never really answers that :p

What makes this movie great is the fact that they don’t tell you what is real and what is a Total Recall vacation memory. Both are possible. It is up to each viewer to decide what is real and what is not. I choose to believe that this is all his vacation starting from when he goes crazy in the chair right to the final scene. But you could argue the opposite and also be right. I love it.

And the guy in the hotel on Mars trying to make him 'wake up' was from the Rekall advert that Quaid watched on the train. Everything he says then also happens (walls breaking down, enemies becoming friends, ...), so this movie spoils its story *twice* before you realize it.

@@BabyNoah22The graphics on the monitor were actually the concept art for the sets. Genius use of the resources.

There is a line, when Quaid first goes to recall. One of technicians makes a passing comment about Blue skies on Mars. This movie leaves it to the viewer to decide... real or dream.

I think you'd enjoy the movie Blue Thunder(1983) starring Roy Scheider. It has plenty of action & drama, and it 100% applies in today’s society.

Same here. Because the entire film is about that. Unlike The Devil's Advocate, where the ending comes out of nowhere.

@@SCharlesDenniconI don’t think Devils Advocate was implying it might have “been a dream”. I think it was supposed to be pretty clear that there is really God and Devil and that he was granted a second chance at life based on his refusal/sacrifice , but also another chance to fall to corruption. How was it “all a dream” at the end when the reporter guy shape shifts into devil guy after Keanu walks out of sight and directly addresses us the audience with a quote from before?

Great reaction and thoughts at the end. I don’t think you caught another hidden bit that when Arnold firsts sits in the chair the scientist doctor looks at the program/memory they are going to upload and says “that’s a new one, Blue Sky on Mars”. Which of course is the exact ending we get. And then a fade to white ending is very unusually selected; some suggest that is him getting the electro lobotomy warned of. Perhaps the company rep character was sweating because of some fear of bad business anxiety of failure or because Arnold’s character willed it to happen to justify continuing to chase the program script.

This is based on a story by famed sci-fi author, Phillip K. Dick, who loved writing about a character who becomes distrusting of their concepts of reality. Several have been adapted to movies, including "The Blade Runner", "A Scanner Darkly", and "Minority Report", all of which I heartily recommend.

"Total Recall" 1990 has a soft spot in my heart because I spent years in Mexico City and it was filmed there. You can recognize many of the locations because they were filmed in the Metro. For example, the scene where Arnold escapes in the Johnny cab is in the Insurgentes metro entrance roundabout with actual neon billboards.
