Clouds are upon the summer sky, There's thunder on the wind; Pull on, pull on, and homeward hie, Nor give one look behind! Row on, row on! Another day May shine with brighter light; Ply, ply the oars, and pull away, Thou must not come to-night. Bear where thou go'st the words of love; Say all that words can say, Changeless affection's strength to prove, But speed upon the way. Oh! like yon river would I glide To where my heart would be; My bark should soon outsail the tide, That hurries to the sea. But yet a star shines constant still Through yonder cloudy sky, And hopes as bright my bosom fill, From faith that cannot die! Row on, then, row! God speed thy way! Thou must not linger here; Storms hang about the closing day; To-morrow may be clear.

Why the change in the lyrics? As far as I know, the last line in the chorus is "There's dawn beyond the night", I didn't know there are other versions. Beautiful rendition though, absolutely beautiful.

This is the best version of this song. The concertina makes up for the lack of harmony on the chorus.

A question: In some versions, f.ex one version sung by Tony Barrand and John Roberts , I believe, the line "Thou must not come tonight" is instead "There's dawn beyond the night." What is the original? (Yours is my favourite version song wise, but I really love the hopefulness in "dawn beyond the night") . Thanks!

The original song is in an 1843 book "Arabella Stuart: A romance from English history". The line "thou must not come tonight" is the original line. Tim Laycock changed it to "There's dawn beyond the night." In the novel the song is sung by a lady's maid who is warning someone that he must not come to to deliver and then pick up a love letter from/to the lady's lover who is in prison. Hence, "thou must not come tonight". BTW I had no idea of this until someone posted the information on another youtube of Row On about a week ago.
