There once was a ship that put to sea The name of the ship was the Billy O' Tea The winds blew up, her bow dipped down Oh blow, my bully boys, blow (huh) Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguing is done We'll take our leave and go She'd not been two weeks from shore When down on her a right whale bore The captain called all hands and swore He'd take that whale in tow (huh) Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguing is done We'll take our leave and go Da-da-da-da-da Da-da-da-da-da-da-da Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da Before the boat had hit the water The whale's tail came up and caught her All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her When she dived down low (huh) Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguing is done We'll take our leave and go No line was cut, no whale was freed The captain's mind was not of greed And he belonged to the Whaleman's creed She took that ship in tow (huh) Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguing is done We'll take our leave and go Da-da-da-da-da Da-da-da-da-da-da-da Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da For forty days or even more The line went slack then tight once more All boats were lost, there were only four But still that whale did go (huh) Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguing is done We'll take our leave and go As far as I've heard, the fight's still on The line's not cut, and the whale's not gone The Wellerman makes his regular call To encourage the captain, crew and all (huh) Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguing is done We'll take our leave and go Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguing is done We'll take our leave and go

Well you got most of the words correct. There is no “huh” in this ballad (NOT Chantey) and there is no “Da da da da da da da da” unless you’re Nathan Evans in which case you probably still think this song is a sea chantey.

I see you took out "the main hatchway gave in" for respect for the family of the hatch man who got the blame for all those years. No one really knows who's fault ,if anyone was to blame ,for the tragedy. Great voice on this rendition.

You neglected to tell, to me, if you are kin to the Coffins of Warrenton VA. STOP IT! Stop from bein negligent, David. NOW!

All Coffins be related. Descendent from Tristram Coffin come from Devonshire to Newbury in 1645.

@@DavidCoffinMusic Thank you for the answerin. You are the best singer in the realm, so thank you for that too. We are likely kin as mine are Pennells of ancient Maine and Boston, wedded to Goff descended of Mayflower. Found a hundred Anglo-Norman names in genealogy but not Coffin yet.
@trukeesey8715Ай бұрын
@@DavidCoffinMusic This feller Don Sineti isn't bad either, but I suspect that his name isn't Anglo-Norman. I met David Coffin of Warrenton before he left town, but I think that he was older than yourself, havin been born in 1947.

Lyrics Below ========== Come gather 'round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone If your time to you is worth savin' And you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin' Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin' For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin' Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled The battle outside ragin' Will soon shake your windows And rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin' Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly agin' Get out of the new one If you can't lend the hand For the times they are a-changin' Now the line it is drawn And the curse it is cast The slow one now Will later be fast And the present now Will later be the past The order is rapidly fadin' And the first one now Will later be last For the times they are a-changin'

I know it's a traditional song, so this goes to the writer rather than David himself, but it feels like "true Yankee whalers" was right there to fit the usual scheme of lyrics set to this tune. Otherwise I love this song, all the nautical lines plus it being "our" version as Americans of a song that has a version for just about every English-speaking country. I first heard it as "like true Newfoundlanders" and also a version where the orders were to sail to "OLD England" :D

I really really love this song.. and your music.. cuz.. my grandpa would have really loved your music.. as he loved shanties.. even if he didn't understand them, as he only spoke german.. Also.. you kinda have the same hair do as he.. which made me tear up a bit, when I realised. Sadly he passed in 2012 :'< And I still miss him dearly.. but your music reminds me of how he and I would dance through his living room while listening to his CD with old germa shanties.. sooo any chance you might one day make your version of De Hamborger Veermaster or Blaue Jungs von der Waterkant? I would really really love that!
