I'm so sad he missed out on the last 20 years and never got to do and see so many things. His poor family and friends have missed him dearly and he was supposedly planning on marrying his girlfriend, having kids, and buying a house; it's just not fair that he didn't get to do any of that. For me, the music is so secondary. It was who he was as a person in terms of the way he treated people and carried himself that made him beautiful and a massive loss to humanity.

But he did. He heard all those people cheering for him. He saw crowds come to see him. I think he knew he was loved, it just didn’t matter, or he couldn’t accept it how he wanted to accept it. No one knows my struggle They only see the trouble Not knowin it’s hard to carry on when no one loves you That’s lie we’re told (that no one loves us, not that it’s hard to not be loved), and it’s set in so deeply that even when you can objectively say you’re wrong, that people love you, you can’t feel it. And now I feel guilty that people love me so much and I can’t feel it, and I can’t give it back the way they need it. It’s not as simple as proving yourself wrong when you have this great deceiver living in your head. That voice is always there, always reminding you that what you see isn’t real, that people are selfish and want to hurt you, that you deserve to be hurt because you’re worthless. And you believe that voice because it’s kept a detailed record of every time something bad happened, so it can bring up every negative moment in your life and string them together as proof that you’re subhuman trash. Even when you know that voice is depression or trauma or whatever speaking, it’s so convincing. By all objective measures, my life is amazing. I’m in the top 15-20% of income earners in the US. I own a home. I have a great woman with me, we have amazing pets, we go on vacations, etc. And still, I wish for something to end the suffering that is life. I’ve tried to end it myself many times (not a current issue). Why? It’s really fucking hard to carry on when you believe you’re unlovable.

What makes it so sad to me is just how inevitable and predictable it was. Predictable yes. It’s just that what’s Elliot Smith been up to is not a stray thought I often had. Then there was his death which I don’t want to touch. But once he was gone and I read about the last couple years of his like his addiction and depression are at a point where I wondered why they didn’t call in an Exorcist because if terrible demons ever existed in someone - visibly and verifiably - they were devouring him in large bites. This sounds like a man both eager and determined to get out of this life. Yes he had a musical talent which dwarfs most competition in songwriting and melody - and even in the blackest pits of his personal hell he was still recording and it’s as good as his best if not better and that just makes him flat out cool. It’s tragic but maybe it was fate. No idea.

“George Martin has actually written a letter to me after listening to one of my records, I think it was “XO”. Absolutely unreal... I almost fainted. He wrote that he liked my music and that I should call him if I came to London sometime. I did, but he was abroad. It was just as well, I would probably not have been able to talk to him. It was all becoming a little too much anyway.” Elliott Smith

@@ghost_mall "I often talk about Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith in the same timelines and in the same paragraphs because I knew them both. And not a lot of people knew both of them; they either knew Kurt or Elliott but didn’t all know them both and I did, so I have a certain perspective. And when you’re talking about the loss, if Kurt had just fucking stayed alive for a couple of more months, if you look at the timeline and you look at where both of them were geographically, they were only like two hours away from each other. And if fucking Kurt had just stuck around for a few more months, which was when Elliott had started to record, I know for a fucking fact that he would have adored Elliott. He would have gone to one of the shows, or they would have met somehow. I’m gonna go there now, I don’t know how Lennon and McCartney met, but if they hadn’t it would have been a complete miss of an opportunity. And that’s what bums me out so much, not just because of the fact that they both fucking died, but they could have been buddies and they might have even hung on for each other. They were both people who loved music so much, and they were both so incredibly similar, I think that the music they could have created as a team would have kept them alive. Music, to both of them, was the most important thing. And Elliott loved Kurt, and he loved Nirvana, and he would ask me about him. So to me, I always thought, damn, if they made a band or if they had met, I honestly feel Elliott would have been like a younger brother to Kurt and Elliott would have showed Kurt how to tone it back and be more musical, and more subtle. And then Kurt could have been the screamer that Elliott was never. They would have just fit each other so well. It’s such a fucking loss, because I know Kurt had an album like Either/Or in him, and Elliott could have helped him see it through." - Mary Lou Lord
