I currently use a 12 hole ocarina, and I think I'm ready to go to a double ocarina, but I'm not sure how they (for a lack of better words) work. Is it okay if you create a video on double ocarinas? And possibly triple if there's time.
@Amaiguri10 жыл бұрын
On the double chamber that I have, there are two separate mouth pieces. You play it like a standard 12-hole and when you get to the top of the scale, you slide over to the other mouth piece and then play with only one of the hands as you hit the final, upper notes. If you get one, it's pretty easy to see how you play it, if you know how to play a transverse. Good luck!

I've got a 12-hole Alto C Ocarina in Zelda Edition. It's out of ceramic. I'm very contended with it and I can play some pieces on it. The thing is: I got it because of you. Thank you, David. Your "Choosing your first Ocarina" video convinced me to get an ocarina, and now I'm learning to play it. Also this video is great! If it's about design, (from all of the ocarinas you introduced) I would choose the Dragon Tooth Ocarina. Looks brilliant.

I'm glad to see you back in action. Btw i'm one of those who got inspired and learned from your videos ;) About what i'd like to see in OcTalk: You once made a video about tremolo (by just breathing) and started introducing the concept, but didn't really get to how to actually do it. Back then you said you'd make a second video about it to continue, but never got to it. Or i just couldn't find the video. Or i could just be completely misremembering. Anyway, a video on tremolo would be neat.

I have recently bought an ocarina and I practice and play it from time to time. Things I would like to know that would help me to learn are mostly: I would like to know the (best) methods you use to learn a new song from a sheet. Do I try to play it slowly in parts first or where should I start? What are the best places to get sheets from? Can I use clarinet sheets for example or what I should be looking for?
@theocaratic10 жыл бұрын
the first place to start with sheet music would be to find the range that you can play on your ocarina. once you have that, you can play most any sheet music that is intended for single note instruments, and even the melody line from some piano sheets. as for the learning of a new song, there are multiple ways of doing this, but if you're slow on reading sheet music i would advise writing the letter beneath the notes so you aren't scrambling to find the note on the ocarina. listening to the song several times also helps a lot with getting it down.
@TheBleson10 жыл бұрын
Thank you, this helps a lot. How do I recognize what music sheet is intended for single note instrument and what is not?
@theocaratic10 жыл бұрын
TheBleson sheet music for single part instruments will probably come in two types. one is just for that instrument, in which case there will be only one staff and one note at a time. the other is when the instrument is paired up with several others, in a 'full score' type arrangement, in which case you just need to identify the instrument that carries the melody line. also, in the case of music written with melody and harmony (as is the case in many hymnals) or piano music, a good rule of thumb is to look at the highest note on the music for the melody line.
@TheBleson10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, this will help me a lot in future! Good thing we have this kind of persons in our community.

I currently have 3 ocarinas: a 12hole inspired by the elves from Lord of the Rings, a Legend of Zelda themed double, and a plastic triple. I will never do plastic again! As soon as I get the slightest bit of moisture built up inside, I lose a good majority of my notes. My favourite is actually my double. I have heard you can play chords by playing both halves of the double at the same time. I don't know if that's true or not. If it is I haven't figured out how to do it yet. I think my next ocarina might be a wood one. They seem to produce lovely sounds and I think they're more durable than ceramic ones. I'm glad to see that OcTalk is coming back. I particularly enjoyed your "how to play" videos where you took a song (often times Zelda songs) and showed exactly how to play it. Can't wait to see more videos!

I definitely have to say chamber switching is my problem area. Between smoothly transitioning, and trying to make the high notes I just chamber switched for sound pure, I have tons of trouble. I have a Double Ocarina of Time from Songbird and it is very beautiful. But because of chamber switching I feel my high notes sound pitchy and very unstable. I just recently got a 12 hole plastic ocarina, and i'm loving it. The only thing, is that even with the accute bend, I still get trouble getting high notes. Upon my research in finding way to improve higher notes, I came upon some discussions of 10 hole ocarina vs 12 hole ocarinas. And how 10 hole ocarinas generally sound better than 12 hole ocarinas. So... yeah, I really wish you could talk about that subject. 10 hole ocarina vs 12 hole. would be really appreciated.
@sonicfan265110 жыл бұрын
As you've most likely already heard David has an OcTalk video which is meant to teach the "acute bend" which is what you're talking about. Also, if you enjoy playing the Ocarina, purchase a ceremic Ocarina, it's far easier to play than most plastic Ocarinas since the don't tend to be well tuned, and it'll sound much better
@Lightsaga10 жыл бұрын
sonicfan2651 Oh I know about the technique. My main point is that from research, I found the subject "10 hole vs 12 hole" appear a lot on the internet when talking about quality of sound. And that seems like something worth talking about. I definately enjoy playing the Ocarina, I'm hoping that by next year I can get a Clay one for better quality. Although not sure if to stay with the Tenor range or to go Soprano. I'm kind of limited in budget so I can't really go both ways.

That was my first Ocarina, it's a great little instrument to learn on, but mine was sharp, and the higher notes were airy no matter what you did, so if you're having some trouble with that, don't worry a good chunk of it is the instrument.
