Great ocarina introduction - I love playing ocarina - 10 (or 11 ) hole ocarinas, that don't have the subholes are usually easier to play in tune. Some ocarinas have an increasing breath pressure as you ascend the scale, but others have a more even breath pressure and require less air to play - much like the tin whistle, brands vary in terms of playing characteristics. They are a great alternative to tin whistle if you play outdoors as wind isn't such a big deal with the windway underneath. I'm hoping for a double ocarina for Christmas that has a 2 octave range. 💖

I heard that the notes only sound in tune at a certain breath pressure, so if you want to play a high note softly you can't, which could be a disadvantage. But then, on most happy or energetic songs, as it ascends, the intensity also increases, so this should not be a problem. I love the sound of the ocarina especially with songs like Riders of Rohan or Invincible from Warcraft. I'd like to get one too.

I'm a pro at both and love both but definitely prefer the ocarina. You need a good quality one diferente keys. Unlike the whistle, the ocarina is both a consert pitch and a transposing instrument. Get a double and you have more scale. Some songs I can only play on the ocarina. Also I find the flats on the ocarina are easier and mostly straight forward. And you can also half cover the hole, so more options. Good to have both.

My understanding is that you can also half-hole an ocarina, but it's generally not done (though I couldn't tell you why)

I'm not sure if this is the best place but I lost everything when I left Canada, including my whistle. I'm restarting my life and can't afford any luxuries. I started playing the tin whistle especially because I wanted to play the lord of the rings shire part you play here. I find it a beautiful and touching theme. Since my baby girl was born 2 years ago, I have an issue playing it because every time she hears it she starts to tear up and cry, I guess she finds it touching as well :)

Interesting that you place these two instrument together. A few weeks ago I had purchased both. Personally, I find the ocarina a bit easier to play. Getting my breathing right on both instruments is still a problem so I do not notice the difference there yet. I find it easier to cover the holes on the ocarina then the tin whistle. I almost always have at least one hole on the tin whistle at least 10% uncovered and it messes the whole thing up. Second from the bottom is the most problematic for me as the spacing in the last two holes are not even with the rest. That said, I was able to play 2 and a half octaves with the tin whistle right out of the box. I heard that most people take year to get to the third octave so I am a little happy about that.

Is the ocarina louder than the typical high D whistle?

Speaking for myself, I find playing the tin whistle is a lot easier to learn to play, being that my tin whistles only play in the keys of G and D. Whereas, my ocarina (and recorder) are full chromatic instruments playing in all major and minor keys. In other words, there are more notes - sharps and flats - and therefore more fingerings to learn with the ocarina and recorder than with the tin whistle (for those of us who read music). But if one plays strictly by ear, the tin whistle and the ocarina and the recorder can be equally as easy. 🎼 🎵 BTW: When it comes to embouchure, speaking from my own experience, if one wants to learn to play an instrument with lots of embouchure - learn to play the trumpet, or other three-valve brass instruments. 👍 😉 🎺 The bugle, on the other hand, is all embouchure. If you one wants to play an instrument requiring no embouchure, there's always the native American flute and the kazoo. 😊

From nostalgia from Legend of Zelda, I actually played ocarina before tin whistle. I learned with a much more simplified fingering system, however, that's quicker to pick up than the chart STL use, though, I wouldn't be surprised if the harder one is more in tune. Oddly, since I'm mainly a tuba player, I find tin whistles harder to blow soft enough on vs bass ocarina (which was my first) and alto recorder, though, I rarely play the higher ocarina to know if it has a similar issue for me. The big vessel of the bass ocarina hadn't been giving me the same issue, however, and my low D whistle has been easier as well. Generally preferring that lower register, I actually have a Bass Bb whistle arriving today that I can't wait to compare to my bass ocarina and tenor recorder.

It's a Bflat whistle, made by Lír. It's a bit longer than a regular high D whistle, but not as long as a low whistle.

@@martinwright1575 I've honestly found all the ocarinas I've tried so, so much quieter! Tin whistles are so 'loud sounding' in comparison because they make a crisper sound, where ocarinas are considerably more mellow. I'm not sure on a decibel level but I'll check later today 👍👍

In my humble opinion, the biggest difference between the two, is playing in a windy day. It's impossible to play the whistles, but ocarinas are fine. I find the ocarina more suited to play inside, which defeats a bit the advantage of playing against a windy clima.

I don't find the ocarina particularly loud, though I guess if you try to play quietly you're more likely to be playing it of tune. You do need to blow harder to reach the correct notes...which inevitably means you're playing louder. There are plenty of ways to quieten a tin whistle though: kzbin.info1fBQ_dWJEyY?feature=share

I've never had much trouble making those notes on tin whistle to be honest, even when I first started out. I've always found tin whistle easier than any of the other instruments I've tried to play, which is why it's the only one I've ever stuck with! 🤣 Certainly doesn't mean it's the same for everyone though!
