Lyrics Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom-tom When the jungle shadows fall Like the tick, tick, tock of the stately clock As it stands against the wall Like the drip, drip, drip of the raindrops When the summer shower is through So a voice within me keeps repeating You, you, you Night and day You are the one Only you beneath the moon and under the sun Whether near to me or far It's no matter darling where you are I think of you Night and day Day and night Why is it so? That this longing for you follows wherever I go In the roaring traffic's boom In the silence of my lonely room I think of you Night and day Night and day Under the hide of me There's an oh, such a hungry yearning Burning inside of me And it's torment won't be through 'Til you let me spend my life Making love to you day and night Night and day Night and day Under the hide of me There's an oh, such a hungry yearning Burning inside of me And it's torment won't be through 'Til you let me spend my life Making love to you day and night Night and day

The first chord is not Dm7 flat 5, darling. Try A flat M7

I mean, Bill Evans and Stan Getz play it with a iib57-V7b9-I also

So do a lot of people. And there isn’t any dissonance with the melody. Yeah the b5 in the d minor is only a half step away, but you wouldn’t really voice the chord with those two notes next to eachother. If you space it out, the the melody and the b5 in the chord are a b9th away from eachother

You're of a narrow opinion as ter what works, boyo.. Stella by starlight....Bill and Mark Levine and I and about 10,000 Good jazz pianists play an upper structure em7b5 , first chord of Stella by starlight. D triad over a tritone in the left hand. E Bb D F# A Melody note, also a 5th up from the target chord dm... as G is a 5th above C in Night and day. in Stella, the ( the "SONG") note is A over a ii min7 b5 to V7 alt Em7b5 to A7 alt (after the Bb "THE", the pickup note preceding the first bar) Night and Day starts on G, the 2 pickup notes G . G-G-G Night and" DAY", a fifth up from C,. the same ii min. 7 b 5, voice exactly the same way, a whole step down. dm7 b5 to G7 alt. the upper structure triad is C top note G, the melody note. nite and DAY=G same EXACT melody note, same chords sounds about .. THE SAME.. jazzy as f---k TRY it. your Ab major sounds fluffy , a nice Broadway tune arrangement choice, pretty, and not at all gritty or dissonant. Jazz musicians will not arpeggiate a Ab major 7 or even a Abmaj 7 #11, they'll usually gravitate toward the more altered tones ...found where? in the altered ii V Abmaj7 , Abmaj7 # 11 dm sus 4...they all work, but they don't work as well in a straight head context, syncing with jazz soloists.

@@MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out all that explanation for a solo backing track? Yes, and with one or two more changes, it's a different song.

@@MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out NO WONDER. You got this from a fake book? To any young musicians / soloists just learning, listen to the song as it was recorded by the composer, Cole Porter, which is how this song became a standard in the first place. You'll hear the voicings, the rhythm, the playfulness of the lyric as it develops with the music - all masterful. And follow your ear, and honor the tune.

You are playing a flatted fifth in the Dm7 underneath a natural fifth in the melody. You don't hear that dissonance?
@EUSL843 жыл бұрын
Make your own backing track if you don't like it darling.
@elon34633 жыл бұрын
Just don’t call it a backing track to ‘Night and Day’ because it’s not. Astonished that you can’t hear it. Kisses

If you’re talking about the first measure, you’re right. It is dissonant. It’s lovely.

@@elon3463 jazz is not about playing perfect harmony. It's about grabbing your attention. You could argue all of music is about that but jazz does that pretty well by using spicy chords and notes which might sound off but that's what grabs someone's attention. You'd probably have a heart attack if you heard any modern jazz...
