As a frequent traveller of the metrolink, I never knew a lot of the stuff on this video! I remember quite a lot of the old stations such as woodlands road, aswell as remembering when Deansgate-Castlefield was called GMEX. Interesting video! Great Job!

Excellent video. Yes it's amazing how the metrolink has evolved over the years, I moved to Manchester 20 years ago and thought it was brilliant then, compared to what I was used to, progress!

Just in case anyone misses your inclusion of Oldham's additional three Non Metrolink stations, these were Oldham Central on the loop line, this closed long prior to conversion to Metrolink , I think at the same time as the Royton Junction to Royton branch (16th April 1966). Oldham Clegg St on the former LNER branch via Ashton Under Lyne to Guide Bridge (closed 4th May 1959), this never converted to DMUs, ancient push/pull steam sets being used until the end. Also Oldham Glodwick Rd on the former branch to Greenfield and Delph (closed to passengers April 1955), although a few freight trains continued to use this as far as the main line at Greenfield, an engine shed being maintained at Lees (26E) until total closure in November 1963.

How come metro link trams can't share tracks with trains but yet trams in Sheffield can
@harry-matakios1344

Because inSheffield they're utilising train trams (literally trams that can run on train tracks). The metrolink is set to start using this technology too in the future

Pedant Alert! A Metrolink tram has been to Bury Bolton Street. One was displayed there during a 1992 Gala at the ELR. Also, Buckley Wells depot was used for remedial work to the fleet before entering service.

@@DavidFrankal Not clear (I would presume dragged by Metrolink's SPV). Just checked, it was vehicle 1007 (the one that also launched city centre operatons) on 6-7 June 1992. There's a picture of it at Bolton Street on Page 58 of the 'Superb' book produced by Andrew Coward and John E Henderson (no relation). Excellent book, if you can still get hold of it.

I do hope you had the appropriate passports visas and inoculations to visit our wonderful town Rochdale. A very interesting set of programmes which will no doubt be the basis of some very high budget tv documentary where they bollocks everything up and they say Bury was actually originally called Billingsroth by Fartbucket.

When I've come to Manchester. I have used the system. I was very impressed. Using disused lines and combined with streets in the centre of Manchester. Could it go underground as well ?
@DavidFrankal
@DavidFrankal 4 жыл бұрын
It could, in theory! Many German cities such as Cologne use this principle to create "Stadtbahn" systems. Cologne uses K5000 trams that are almost identical to the M5000s in Manchester kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKfXlX6fjLmqpLM
