I think it's an awesome video and I hit the like button however I could see some people nitpicking and saying that it's not technically fiberglass because he didn't use fiberglass, he used felt or whatever it was and the resin...

David, you should do a series dedicated to dashes and doors, maybe even put up template plans? Do one for most popular muscle cars, as there isn’t a lot out there, for different designs

Love the technique, I'm already inspired for many projects that I could adapt this to. The fleece over multiple materials to tie them together is outstanding. Just in this video alone: MDF, Plastic, and Metal married by Fabric and Bondo! Brilliant! Especially stronger than vacum forming on a DIY level. Thanks for sharing.

I did see that one as well. Thinking about doing a custom Engine Cover for an LS swap that I am doing on a Jeep. Since it is just a decorative piece, I am sure your method would be awesome for this. I like the idea of a felt first layer. Sweet!
@DavidGuyton
@DavidGuyton 7 жыл бұрын
It'll work for just about anything that isn't a structural part of the car....however I should point out that you should use fleece, and not felt....two very different fabrics and if you try to use felt you are going to be cursing at me haha

Lol alright how did you work out the gauges to work properly?
@DavidGuyton
@DavidGuyton 9 жыл бұрын
Well I didn't wire up his gauges, I just made the dash for him to place the gauges into. But your gauges should come with sending units, which you plug into the engine, gas tank, etc and then you just connect the gauges to those wires from the senders

Excellent, and very informative. I have been considering this type of solution to my gauge placement issue. But by fabricating a new console insert, using the method you've outlined, I think I'll be OK. Thanks a lot! :)
@DavidGuyton

You bet! I actually modified (heavily) a Mazda console for my '65 Impala using this method. Started some door panel parts from scratch too. It works very well for this stuff....but make sure you have the parts installed on the car BEFORE applying the resin. That way they are sure to fit when you put it back in the car. In this case, the dashboard was stiff enough that I didn't need to do that.By the way here's a pic of my Impala interior, all made with the same method, wrapped in leather'like vinyl (still not finished): i173.photobucket.com/albums/w41/lordguyton/in11111_zps3ade072d.jpg i173.photobucket.com/albums/w41/lordguyton/in2222222_zpse425ee15.jpg

That really is a great tutorial. I have never thought of using filler and resin together. I seen in other post you use Bondo brand filler. I can see you know what you are doing. But 3M makes several great body fillers like all the lite types they have finishes many times easier than Bondo brand. They don't leave air holes nor do they have hard spots. They sand like a dream. Just thought I'd pass it along. The price isn't much different as well. Thanks for such a good detailed video.
