As any good teacher would, He would point out the error of the pagan's ways, and how God's plan actually included some they would consider unthinkable for candidates of heaven

it also taught them - even pagan sacrifices did not please their gods, that no matter what amount of work we do, or the intent, good or heinous, God is not pleased with works without faith ... the pagans had faith in the hopeless evil of demons Jesus showed them, the true kingdom will be another way, the one and only way.

Meeting at the gates was Genius too, because if the boys knew and studied their Old Testament they knew whatever was important would happen out in the city square It was also Genius and revealing to the disciples - this is the gate of the enemy. I am going to assume the majority had no idea of it, but there may have been a secret sinner among them like Judas who may have frequented and been well known there, showing such disciples, I know what you do, when you do in secret.

This was Genius on Jesus' part to introduce and teach the disciples - something they and most of the religious right reverends believed, that it was all about the Jews and no way could God ever even consider a pagan savage to be part of His plan. So to take them away (at least a long day's marathon walk at a brisk pace) gave them something to consider. That just maybe this kingdom Jesus was talking about was not an immediate overthrow of the Roman government or culture (as it was in Moses' day when they escaped the Pharoah to the rescue of the Promised Land).
