Buying & Selling Antiques in Auction with David Harper (BBC Bargain Hunt, Antiques Roadtrip, Flog It)
I’m going to take you to an antiques auction in Alnwick, Northumberland in the English borders to see if I can bag some antiques bargains to sell on for a profit?
Some very different items here, nothing like you’ve seen before on TV antiques shows. I’m spending my own money, but to make a profit from antiques, you need to buy with your head, not your heart, otherwise, you’re in trouble!!

It never seems to amaze me how popular novelty goods are-I have made the highest percentage profits on them-love that nutcracker- The woman’s Dunhill case was sweet-it does look modern save for the engraving style, the stretch monograms, which was popular in the thirties and forties-I am gobsmacked by its value!!!! What a shocker. At £500+, would you just be purchasing it to keep? Or would you be hoping it would appreciate enough to at least make profit sometime on future? Great episode! Thanks David!!!

I was shouting at the screen for you to sit on your hands with the silver compact 😂 I can see how tempting it is to keep bidding. The cigarette case is a good example of being up against it in auctions if you are looking to sell an item on for profit. That case went for full retail to somebody who just loved it or collects such items. You can't compete against a bidder like that if you're a dealer. It was a real beauty though. ATB Doug

Liked the compact but not at the price it went for! I guessed the price it would go for at £400. Glad you got the bronze but it wasnt my "cup of tea" so I will see what it looks like when it has been mounted. Great video anyway.

Its often quoted but very true that for a deal to be good it has to be "the right item at the right time & at the right price" That statue seemed like a good deal, the others are great things but the price was wrong if your looking to resell. By the way sold an almost identical Cartier compact from the 1930's last year. It did not have the jewels or the moto but almost identical otherwise. Think they were made in Italy on commision for top UK retailors. I believe Italy was like the wild west of for jewellers in the early 20th century with no central marks so I guess the best got sold in the UK.

You’re right ,whatever it is, it needs to be bought at the right price. I’ve still got pieces I paid the wrong price for 20 years ago!

I think so. Once it’s mounted cleaned and waxed, it should be a few times the money
