I think it speaks of your character that you are willing to share your knowledge with others so that they may make money doing the same thing. I have friends who have businesses and they won’t even talk about them because they are so afraid that you will try and do the same thing. I think that is being petty and small. Thank you for being so open and honest. It pays off in the end. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and look forward to them. I think that is how you prosper because you share your knowledge and truly care about people.

That's funny. I've run into that same mentality so many times over the years... I'm a copywriter, so I deal with clients from a wide array of industries, and that is always something you see - people trying to safeguard their trade secrets. Like they've got KFC's seven herbs & spices or something!! But what people don't realize is that there are infinite slices of pie...

A good tip for those who haggle on price is to never say, "I'll give you $xx for that..." It is insulting to the seller. Instead, say something like, "Will you take $xx for that..."

When working with a dealer it is best to keep a rapport, or you can say, "What is the best price you can offer". If you are a repeat customer, be assured if the dealer is fair you will receive more than a 10% discount.

An antique by definition is an item which is 100 years old. Junk on the other hand is someone's junk and another person's treasure.

I’m a collector and therefor the issue of value is less relevant, but I sill choose carefully. The things I purchase generally have a story, my favorite type of story being what it is. Occasionally I restore items, if the restoration brings me enjoyment. An example of a restored item is my fully restored and rewired streetlight. There is zero value to me in an item such as this, if it cannot be appreciated in it’s full dramatic colours. My most basic rule is “buy it to enjoy it”.

Nine times out of ten collectors (do) become dealers as their collections are busting at the seam. Try just keeping a collection of something you will never part with and the rest is on the table for resale.

Thanks for the advice. I inherited three estates in the last few years and two of them were hoarders. I now have most of it stuffed into my house so it looks like a hoarder lives here. I do online sales because I do not have the capital or the health to run my own store. I love watching you with yours though. Ebay and Etsy have been fine but, yes, they do suck up a lot of your time. KZbin live sales are a lot easier but you still have all that packing and invoicing to do. I have learned so much from watching you over the years. Your channel has been a blessing and a lot of fun.

Hello from Winnipeg! and thank you so much for all your advice! I have been buying and selling antiques and vintage for only 3 years now, and it has always been a dream and passion of mine. Some of your points here really affirmed hunches I already had, and otherwise, so refreshing to hear someone talk honestly and learning about the business! You are correct, It is always a learning curve! LOL I'm just about to foray into the world of auctions, which I have always been intimidated by... your videos have been extremely helpful! Congratulations on your KZbin channel, I just discovered it recently and am hooked. The Potter House has been giving me life this winter!!

Thank you for educating me on the antique business. I wondered how anyone could make a living doing this, my convoluted way of thinking was that you were hoarders and got rid of very few things. It is nice to know that not everything ends up in the dump, I am guilty of liking new and shiny but I have lived 53 years in an old reconstructed house that is very comfortable.

Excellent advise. I especially like the part about what's known as the "sunk cost fallacy." That's where you keep holding on to something because of an emotional attachment to it long after you should have let it go or sold it. That's quite possibly the single biggest reason people fail at this type of business.

I find that on picker's shows as well. A collector who wants to sell, will not do so, as he is in love with the stuff.

@@andytaylor1588 Yes and on shows like that you sometimes see great stuff or things like vintage cars just collecting dust and other stuff on top of it, it's hard to watch haha. Better sell it to someone who can clean it and/or fix it up and sell it to someone who can appreciate/use it better. But on the other hand I can understand why people get attached to stuff. It's always good to be aware of this, it happens to everyone.

I live in Vancouver, Washington and there are a lot of antique shops! I mainly buy the men's items (not grandma's antiques-lol) such as old cigar boxes and tobacco ephemera, old bank check books and receipt books, old rustic tool boxes, old pamphlets, medicine apothecary, old vintage coin wrappers, anything wood or metal that is embossed, etc. I just love the old typefont! I love your outlook. A fair profit is worth having. After many years stationed in Germany I came back with three 1860 schranks/break fronts and many clocks and pre war pitcher and bowl sets. My most loved item is an old German blanket chest, painted with a date of 1648. It came out of a barn where it had spent most of its life as a grain bin. Not gorgeous, paint darkened and hard to see, bit I love it. I don’t expect much value from any of it, but it pleases me. I wish you were in Portland, Oregon, or someone like you. Word of mouth means a lot.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALEX!! ...and many more! Thank you so much for the lesson in owning/running a vintage/antique/'junk' shop :-D. I have oodles of stuff in my home that I need to pass along to others that would fill a little shop, AND, I would REALLY love to do that. Your tutorial in the business of running such a shop was very helpful and inspiring. However, it remains to be seen whether or not I take that initial step to make it happen. We'll see..... What a great Video from such a fantastic antique shop. You have the best antique store I've seen. I've traded vintage cameras for 5 years and learnt from experience and looked for trends. If you watch eBay you have to check the SOLD listings NOT the prices that the items are listed for! The key is being careful not to pay too much and get stuck with items as they are dead money.Vintage cameras have trebled in price in 5 years.

I have an idea for you: Presumably you have a sign telling buyers they are on camera. There must be interesting videos of some of your sales. If someone is beating you down on the price, offer them a discount if they'll sign a release. Then you can show the whole life of an item, from where you dug it out, to resto, to sale, like Salvage Hunters does...

You started collecting at the age of nine and I started at the age of 11, and purchased my first home in cash at the age of 21 with the money I made selling antiques. My motto is "if you like it then buy it" no guarantee everything you buy will sell so be prepared to live with the items which do not sell. Remember, keep in mind what others want to collect is (not) so much what you want to collect as taste vary. Rarity is key with antiques and condition is everything when reselling.

Great video, thanks! I saw a mermaid behind you, the kind of stuff I collect (among other things, which means: a lot of different things 🙁). I like to go to antique shops and flea market with my wife here in Switzerland, and although I don’t have a business, sometimes I buy something to resell. It happened already that I bought something cool for a very good price and sold it 5 minutes later at the next antique shop. However, I am now at the stage where I really have to sell part of my collection because the space. I will perhaps do this online, I am not sure yet. Especially my collection of chess items is quite nice, with some very interesting things. I should sell at least 2/3 of the collection.
