She Didn't Rebel In The 1960s & Reveals How She Saw Those Who Did

In 1989 when I was producing my television series on the 1960s and how baby boomers remembered their experiences back then, I was fortunate to interview 200 people expressing different points of view. Each interview subject freely expressing what they saw and how it appeared to them 20 years later. I appreciated Emmy for her ability to express how experienced politics and social life at the University of Michigan when she was a student there in 1969.
While she was not a rebel, she was an activist who helped grow a student organization, the Young Americans For Freedom, YAF, to become a movement that represented social and political conservatives. She expressed her feelings about Barry Goldwater when he ran for president in 1964 and about left-wing political activists, liberals, hippies, marijuana smokers, and other social movements taking place during that time. She describes her experience in a classroom at that time being censored (cancel culture) for bringing up subjects that the professor did not want discussed.
So much has been said about 1960s University student rebellions and I think that it is important that those with different perspectives get the chance to share how they saw things on KZbin for future generations to consider.
The University of Michigan was a hotbed of ideas during those years that included students ranging from right-wing Republican conservatives to violent political leftists. Emmy courageously openly expressed her feelings in this interview and it captures her memories 20 years after the events that she reflects on occurred.

Now it’s at the point where stealing elections and attacking the Capital are all republican taking points. What Republican sources have I got this information from? ALL of them. I’ve followed everything from the early days of Rush Limbaugh to all of the right wing media. I’ve watched countless republican voters support or participate in abhorrent behaviour attacking Walmart, Costco employees spitting in their faces over mask mandates. I’ve watched as they’ve given trillions of dollars in corporate welfare and tax cuts to those who have the most while attacking our allies. I’ve watched the party and it’s voters support nearly all of our enemies. The few conservatives that resemble anything like the lady being interviewed here are nowhere to be found aside from a handful. You’ve got Liz Cheney on her own as the last reminded of a long forgotten time. Now the vile cretins are attacking relentlessly. The party of values now elect child predators, praise Putin wearing shirts saying I’d rather be Russian than Democrat. The Republican Party of Florida just shipped a bunch of immigrants they forced fraudulent documents on to another state so they would be disqualified from the very legal process of immigration. I can think of thousands of reasons anyone voting Republican now have nothing to do with the party this lady belonged to. Republicans used to run on fiscal responsibility yet the last 4 R presidents were handed either SURPLUSES or an economy on the upswing and they’ve managed to bankrupt the treasury 4 times in a row at one point sending the US spiralling towards a recession and near depression. Any Republican that used to have values now support fringe lunatics like Marjorie Taylor Greene. So yeah, aside from the Republicans that attacked our healthcare workers during a global pandemic, literally spitting in their faces after they’d just worked their 100th consecutive 18 hour shift, aside from those that attacked voting registers and vote counters, aside from those that stormed the Capital in an attempted insurrection, that battered the police killing some of them, aside from ALL of the bigot groups like the KKK, Nazis, proud boys, oath keepers and thousands of militia groups all supporting the cult of personality, marches in the streets of the US with white nationalists chanting “soil and blood” and other third reich chants carrying tiki torches, despite supporting a Republican president that’s stolen thousands of government secrets and data I’m sure you have a point. Now it’s YOUR turn. Direct me towards the Republicans that in any way resemble this lady in the interview. If they exist how could they possibly identify with this cult? I like her. Anyone who can articulate a political perspective without constantly injecting #hashtag Twitter terms to convey that perspective is pretty great in my book (yes I know this predates Twitter by decades). I can't say im much of a conservative, and I'm not particulairly progressive either, but do observe political narrative, and I wish people could still communicate in this way. I am very R, Conservativ with that said I personally don't think that protesting the Vietnam War was all wrong from the standpoint of the original objective was to help get the French out and not to get into a long and protracted war, which it became. 55 to 60 K Casualties?.I am also of the opinion that Woodstock was not all bad it was just music festival that just happened to get a little bit crazy I will have to say over all the interview great Mr Hoffman I've greatly enjoyed the cerise.

Because our politics never moved on from the 60's. It's best reflected in Reagan, who seemed the poster child for the "good ol days" for the republicans, (and who until recently almost universally deified him) and modeled their social policies on an almost caricature of the "way things used to be" and the Democrats still pine for the glory days of the 60's when they "broke barriers" and "made change" Which results in the pathological compulsion to progressively break newer boundaries, falling faster and faster down the slippery slope in the name of moral righteousness. Nothing ever stood out more in that regard than Capitol hill democrats, and I forget what they were on about- but all these old 70+ year olds sitting in in congress or the senate, singing kumbaya like it was 1967 all over again.

Historically the stigma with Marijuana was started against Mexican people(again with anti-immigrant sentiment). I find it interesting the code words that are often used throughout history regarding that issue and many more. She's an individual who's very comfortable with rules and staying in her safe box. My grandmother who was a conservative christian from TX born in 1910 ended up addicted to her “nerve” pills in the 70s. So you can miss me with this ignorant bullsh*t. My adult daughter was taking prescriptions for anxiety and depression for several years. She weaned off the prescriptions because of side effects. She now has much better results from smoking or eating cannabis.

🎯💯 Absolutely! I became crippled by severe, chronic pain and fatigue in my late teens, early 20s, and cannabis literally saved my life. It also made me much less uptight, much less anxious. Before that, I'd never taken any drugs. When I started passing kidney stones chronically in my late 20s, I was put on heavy pharmaceuticals, and _those_ are truly dangerous. But right-wingers get much of their campaign contributions from Big Pharma, so we never hear about them. Meanwhile, people are doing years in jail for nonviolent, cannabis charges.

Books out now like The Boy Crisis and it’s in depth description of the toll the women’s movement took on the boys. The author saw himself as one of the prominent theorists in the women’s movement. The degree of isolation and abandonment experienced by boys, especially boys with no male role models at home. The crisis is that they now feel unneeded and irrelevant. We have to reset somehow.

I was a bit taken aback that she was concerned about communism moving into Africa. What alternatives were there available to them after the horrors inflicted upon them by colonialism ? Why on earth would they trust the West after that experience ? She even mentioned the Congo ! King Leopold of Belgium committed almost unspeakable atrocities on the entire population. Capitalism is different from Imperialism. One is a political system, whereas the other is an economic system. The fact that the political system practised by colonialists was evil does not discount the gains made by capitalism - which is the only force known to have lifted the largest numbers of people from poverty. As a Canadian, it is frustrating to hear her say the growth of government caused inevitable societal and personal degradation. Only an American with their head up their ass would think that. Look at Canada and most of European society -- that is, the countries most like America. We have way more government involvement in life -- and way better outcomes. The United States has (at least) three major differences that I think have made their society unequal and unstable compared to their peers: 1) making individual wealth the top economic priority (sacrificed: universal health care), 2) people who see racism as part of patriotism, exemplified by the notion of "real" Americans (sacrificed: access to voting), 3) the influence of fundamentalist Christianity in public life (Why do these Christians think their imaginary rules should be privileged over democratic laws and scientific findings? Why can't a Jew, Muslim or atheist be elected to the highest federal offices in the land? Why did they insist the first black president could not be a "real" Christian, and therefore, not a "real" American?)

I remeber as a young conservative "Youth for Nixon". I went to few pot parties. Until I saw a very smart liberal friend, on of my best friends at the time, get a joint laced with LSD. Yes, he tripped out. I though "That's not Ron." It frightened me and I never again got near any drugs. In all fairness I smoked cigars until two yers ago. Yes, we knew there were extremists on both sides, but for the most part conservatives and liberals could intermix with no issues. I suspect a lot depeded where you went to college. Plus was an older student than most. In my case undergrad work came off and on between working assignments. I hope younger viewers can learn from both perspectives. On a more personal note your films have helped me understand what my parents went through and what the real honest consensus on stuff from the 50s-80s helped me get to know them and get where they're coming from better. They we in their mid 40s and 50s when they had me so they are much older then my friends parents and thus have less film documentation of what was going on when they were my current age. I distinctly remember conservatives in the 60s as deniers of the foundation of America itself. Most were propagandized into believing a fable of immigration that resembled Disney stories. America in 67 and 69 were two completely different mindsets. I also remember music having a profound effect on culture, and Jimi Hendrix was at the center. If you were a University student in the late 60s, what Hendrix was doing was considered taboo to most conservatives of that time period. It was almost too heavy to contemplate, and the stories of his concerts TURNED OUT TO BE REAL. Nobody had ever imagined how heavy music could be.

But that was the era in which everyone, even politicians, had some sort of business they were involved with aside from politics. usually agriculture, but sometimes industry. And when they left office, could in theory, just re-integrate back into the public. but we havent had that kind of environment since probably around the 70's

This is actually false, both England and the US did better right after both Thatcher and Reagan. In fact the 80’s were considered a period of excess because of this. The 5 Asian Tigers: Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore are the only Asian countries that follow Neoliberal policies and are the only rich Asian countries. The rest are poor and heavily regulated. In fact all countries that are once poor and are now rich got that way through neoliberalism. This is true without exception. Look at North Korea and South Korea. NK is socialist and heavily regulated and is poor. SK is neoliberal and is rich. Same was true of East Germany and West Germany. EG = socialist = poor, and WG = neoliberal/capitalist = rich.

When you recorded this interview, I was of course much younger and perhaps had a more naive worldview, but even then people of her economic ilk still managed to make "Joe Lunchpail" seem derogatory. And as to their "straight ahead" view based on learned history, it's no wonder they had those views when the writers of those histories typically called indigenous peoples "savages" or explorers representing the "civilized world", terms taken for granted at the time but even at the time still condescending to the people (read a few early 20th century Nat'l Geo to get a flavor). Further, I asked then and still ask, how many people a year die from smoking mj, still federally illegal, and how many die as a direct result of overconsumption of alcohol? That was also illegal for a time in the US. Were we really any better off societally? Imho, I doubt it. Well, that's my 2c, for what that's worth these days....

As for things like affordable healthcare for all, housing etc. I staunchly disagree that this is “communism” - ensuring the ultra rich pay their fair share of taxes and using that to provide a decent baseline standard of living for all people has already happened in more than a few democratic countries, and their standard of living and general well being and level of education is much higher because of it. If nobody has to worry about living on the streets or 5heir car despite having a full time or several jobs, they’ll be much happier, they’ll be more productive workers, they’ll have more time with their families and crime rates will plummet as people are no longer desperate to survive. Everybody wins.

The appearance of a rush towards communism and socialism is 90% due to the horrible political education that Americans receive - an education meant to make basic social democratic reforms look radical and make the expectation the state perform the functions it does in every other developed country look authoritarian. There is no groundswell of people looking for the end to the capitalist class. There is no mass movement aimed at ending a society with class altogether. Socialists who do not want those things are not socialists by definition. Communists who do not want those things are not communists by definition. They can call themselves communists and socialists. Right wingers can call them communists and socialists. But I can call myself the King of England. Doesn't make it true. If you think the UN and WEF are somehow socialist and communist organizations, you're woefully misinformed. They're regarded and agents of imperialism. Communists probably hate few organizations more, other than NATO and thr IMF. The push for social democratic reforms and state enforced improved working conditions does grow out of similar interests as socialist and communist movements. The younger end of the working class is tired of being stepped on. They're tired of working paycheck to paycheck. They're tired of long, unpredictable hours. The American middle class was the product of American labor history and state action, not work ethic and financial planning. This is an indisputable historical fact. Young people on the left know this. Older Americans, after benefiting from organized labour's gains and post-WWII social welfare programs, had also been conditioned by Cold War propaganda. So they were easy targets for anti-labor propaganda and pulled up the latter. They gutted social welfare programs. They killed private sector unions. The right did this first, and then the Dems met them, notably with Clinton. The older base that supported this already had homes, already benefited from high salaries and predictable hours. They bought the comforting lie that they'd done this all through their own hard work with no state assistance and no union, and younger people should do the same. Young progressive people are too smart to fall for this. They look at our former peer nations and demand the same comfort and security that less wealthy countries are able to provide their citizens. I don't think the moderate reforms suggested by these progressives are sufficient. I don't like America or find it reformable; they do. I don't like capitalism or find it reformable; they do. But I'm a communist, and they are not.

I tell these right-wingers all the time, who go on about the "radical Democratic extremists" (🤣🙄🤦‍♂️), to go to almost any other country in the world and see what a _real_ left-wing party looks like. Tho it wouldn't stop all their "commie" talk about the Dems, as they keep dragging the Overton window further right. The Democratic Party (and the corporate media - which will never be truly left-wing) drives me nuts, regularly, with their weak, feckless, "moderate" right, corporatist, so-called "neoliberalism"... but I'll do whatever I can to get as many Republicans out of office as possible. If that means voting and donating Democrat, that's what I'll do. My first election, as a CA native, I voted Nader in 2000, knowing it wouldn't effect the overall outcome, due to the insanity of the Electoral College. I won't vote for anyone again I don't think can defeat the Republicans. I know it's a vicious cycle but, while the Democrats are infected with the same dark money as other politicians, they are not "just as bad as the GOP" as so many of my fellow left-wingers say. I'll admit, I do worry that you could be right about our prospects as a nation. Being an older millenial, I've known this country was spiraling down for decades. Finally, my boomer parents have woken up to just how bad things are, as well... it amazes me that anyone can wonder why the youth would be rejecting this late-stage Capitalist, corporate-welfare, theocratic oligarchy. There is no rush to actual socialism or communism. There's a rush for us to keep up with the standards of living in other nations!

Sorry to comment so much here. It is an interesting but frustrating video. I wish I could have debated her at the time. We have opposite impressions from the same events. Eg she thought the media were sympathetic to the hippies at the time. That is certainly not how I remember it !

A few simple word changes gives you two vastly different outlooks, I recommend checking out Ground News to see real examples of this. Let's compare a theoretical story, a family dies from heat stroke while crossing the US/Mexican border. "Undocumented immigrant family dies while crossing the border" vs. "Illegal immigrant family dies during border crossing" Two words are different, and you can instantly tell which one CNN/Fox would run. The undoc vs illegal is obvious, but while vs during paint two different pictures. While offers more of an explanation, as opposed to during which makes it seem more like a consequence. Especially with clickbait titles, you have to think about the language used as you'll get two different interpretations of the same events by subtle differences you aren't even aware of. The interviewee and yourself are correct at the same time. Different media outlets portray vastly different versions of the same story
