Thanks for another good one David. I like the way you persisted with that odd roof detail. That Memorial will also look well. As 'Remembrance' should be year round, I took the liberty in posting the first War Poem I had published, to mark your new addition. POPPIES IN A FIELD. Poppies in a field, for the boy no longer here; he sailed for the Western Front without any fear. Peaceful was the image in his head that day; just turned twelve, as he lay in the newly cut hay. And now turned fourteen, he's gone, having lied about his age; Recruiting Sergeants didn't care, as the boy signed the page. So many of these boys, joined up, forsaking favourite toys; Like Pied Pipers, the call of the guns led them to the noise. A hundred years ago this morning; he left his trench, the July day was dawning. They trample the Poppies all around; as allied shells and mortar, pound the German ground. Quickly over the top he went, the Officer was keen to teach; but the bullet with his name on it, was not yet in the breech. "Not too fast, keep the line straight"; he heard the Lieutenant’s call, not daring then to wait. Across the broken ground they stare; resilient Poppies still defiant, here and there. He passed what resembled Tommy Mc'Aid; still missing from last night's trench raid. They tread the hell of 'No-man's Land', the gallant lines progress; among them, blasts artillery shells, causing shell shock and distress. Then Private Muller from the Rhine, replaced the magazine; the bullet with his name on it, the boy had never seen. And now our boy has fallen in the same old way; The French field reminds him of that newly cut hay. He'll never get a chance to write; to explain to grieving parents, "it's alright". His blood now feeds the Poppies here; Poppies in that field, for the boy no longer here. By JACK D. HARRISON. 2016. (In memory of Grandad, who spent time on the Somme; and to the 250,000 boys who raised their age; to get into The Great War].

Hello Jack. Thanks for sending such a wonderful and moving poem. I have my Grandparent's, and now my Father's and my uncle's war medals, together with a few family medals that were left to them. I am now custodian of all my family honors, medals, letters and photographs - we are living through bad times at the moment - but nothing can compare. Thanks again. (I have only just replied because - for some reason- it was filtered into my spam file. I will need to check this more often). Thanks, and apologies again ... David

@@davidhyde4329 You're welcome. That must look quite a sight, all laid out by name. I remember sitting on Mum's Dad's knee as he rolled his ciggies for the day; he served on The Somme. Dad's Dad was on the Channel boats carrying troops and dispatches etc. He died early, so never knew him, but they were both in the Great War. I must say I haven't seen many Layouts include memorials like yours, yet they are part of who we are, and were. Keep them coming, and stay well. Jack.

At first, I didn't think anything of that red faded wood siding. There are many red barns and outbuildings in this area. And some do turn a grayish-pink color over time. Especially if there are no base coats with a cheap barn paint applied. A most enjoyable channel for all your interests, David.
@davidhyde43294 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I never took into account the real life fading. In the UK however I have never come across this colour fading on old barns. Anyway, I am happy with the replacement - I can show you in this comming week's video. Thanks for the comment n ... David

David, Good to see some progress, but it's your time, your speed! If the Dinky's took over, and the kingfisher(!), then that is of course your choice. I do though enjoy the railway ones the most! Well, when I say railway, I suspect it's actually the scenic/townscape modeling I really enjoy. So I am really glad to see progress at Deresley. Keep well, keep safe, be kind.

Nice to see the progress at Deresley, I like the modification to the war memorial. Might I suggest that for odd shapes, like the building roof, they can be shaped using blue foam which can be cut and shaped easily and used as a frame work to assemble the roof. I build model aircraft and blue foam is used frequently for shaping complicated parts.

Hi Ian - thanks for your tip. I have heard of this material but, in my days of R/C modelling it was balsa 😁😁. Never thought of using it for my scratch building on my model railway. Another excellent video, David. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. A minor observation about the War Memorial: I have one in storage at present, belonging to a model tramway which, of course, is more urban street scene than anything else. When I built mine, in a park, I used a Faller HO kit of a fountain. The man on top was holding a goose or other large bird under his arm, and I used a figure of a Highland Piper from the Britains range instead. It doesn't look too bad!

Super job on the Southwold building's David, I first came across you due to the railway, but like many-others equally enjoy your Dinky restorations & Deresley Town. I had to give up my model railway + working on the Colne Valley Railway (since 1979) last year to move onto a 40' narrowboat, talk about downsizing! (had a 3 bedroomed house with only me)!! but still watch my favorite channels on KZbin (best of having no TV is little CV19 media trueful/or rubbish rubbed down my neck! as I Am classified as a Key worker 😒, but thumbs up to all other Key workers in the HGV, NHS, PSV shop/food industries 👍🙂 a 10/15 video sometimes can make a bit of difference to our our present times.

I think you have really nailed it with the war memorial David and those gates are looking very impressive. I have had the occasional fading of printed card/paper but it has always been the pre-printed type. I now keep most of the UV light out of my railway room with a blackout blind and it has so far proven effective. However. if I remember the orientation of your house correctly your window faces in a northerly direction so you should escape most of the bright sun making the fading your experience suprising. Does the early morning/late evening sun come through your window? ........................John
@davidhyde43294 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. Yes you are correct the window faces north and the layout is against the opposite wall. I did not mention in this video the 30's warehouse low-relief project I intend to make from a download. I have bought some inkjet spray fixer that claims to have UV protection. I will use this - perhaps another video?? - Lastly, no, the track of the sun is to the side of the house so never crosses directly into the windows👍👍👍 ... David

Hi David Enjoyed the video. We are also in a more limited lockdown than you are. Our PM pulled up the drawbridge a few weeks ago and we can't take convicts now. On a more serious note if you have florescent lights they may be the cause of the fading. Stay safe. Paul from Zillmere

@davidhyde43294 жыл бұрын
Hi Val, glad you enjoyed this. I just go by the scale/gauge rating on the product. I always go for 'OO' or 4mm. Both are 1/76th scale which is correct for my railway. HO is a smaller scale - 1/8th - close but but it can look small on a OO layout. HO is the most popular gauge worldwide but OO is historically more established in the UK ... David
@bjarvis4353 жыл бұрын
How do you get Dinky at 1.50th to fit with OO/HO gauge ???
@davidhyde43293 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. Its an optical illusion. In real life the scale difference is obvious, but, if you photograph a large scale object in front of a small scale object, providing the shot is taken from a low viewpoint, it will make the small scale look correct - but much further away!! 👍👍👍
