Probably not much difference because both 4.0Ah HP and 4.0Ah Black are using the same Sony VTC4 battery cells according to the Home Depot technical datasheets. Not sure how much more those two extra contacts can extract out of those cells. As such (at least on paper), I think the 4.0Ah Black might be a better value than the 3.0Ah HP which uses Samsung 15M cells. Sony VTC4 is 2100mah/30A, Samsung 15M is 1500mah/23A. It'd be cool if you can test those two.. 4.0 Black versus 3.0 HP since their pricing is similar where I am. Great work. Love your channel!

So I have both of these batteries and I tore them apart to get the tech specs because I wanted to know the diff as well. Ryobi p108 18v 4ah 72 watt (silver/black housing) 18650 Battery Type Samsung INR18650-20Q Capacity 2000mAh Rated Voltage 3.60V Nominal Discharge 2.00V Cutoff voltage 15000mA (15Amps) Maximum draw Ryobi p197 18v 4ah 72 watt (Black housing) 18650 Battery Type Sony US18650VTC4 Capacity 2100mAh Rated Voltage 3.60V Nominal Discharge 2.5V Cutoff voltage 30000mA (30Amps) Maximum draw There are 10 batteries in each pack in a 2p5s setup 5 in serial times 3.6v = 18 volt total 2 strings of 5 are in parallel 2000mah x 2 = 4ah or in the case of the VTC4 is is actually 4.2Ah So to me the cheaper black battery has better specs by a tiny bit than the more expensive p108 Home Depot sells the p108 for 99.00 and the p197 for 69.00 but when they run specials around different holidays you can get the 2-pack of the p197 4ah black battery for 79.00 for both as seen here www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-18-Volt-ONE-4-0-Ah-Lithium-Ion-Battery-2-Pack-P145/306703572 (currently not in stock) but they bring back this deal all the time. Just keep checking. Especially around Memorial day, Labor Day and before Christmas. I don't see why I would want to buy the more expensive battery or why either one is not almost identical in performance.

The number does not mistake so now is down to: What does those two extra terminals do when they communicate to a tool that actually able to communicates to them. I would love to see this same test done on a P262 impact driver torqueing rated at 600 Lb. torque. That would be a real test on these batteries.

During the shut down I had to do some work involving treated 6x6's. I needed to make a mobile "floor" for our big vise and stand while working on a backhoe my dad bought so we didn't have to keep running down to the shed. I had three pieces that were cut to 12 inches each so I could put them side by side and after thinking of different ways to put them together, I figured the best way would be to drive huge lag screw through them. What I found were these massive, 12" x 1/4" landscaping screws that used a Torx bit to drive them in (cost me $2 each!). I pre-drilled some holes to get them started and used my 1/2in impact wrench with the standard black 4.0amp battery to drive them. Needless to say, it got a little warm by the time I was done, but it drove six screws into the wood with almost no resistance. One of these days I'll upgrade to the HP batteries for the brushless stuff, but for now the black batteries seem to work just fine :D

You might want to consider using an impact wrench for your lag tests in the future. It's easier on the tool and no more breaking hex adapters. Also, the second lag you drilled with the HP battery went in slower because it was too close to the first lag. You might want to space them apart next time because the first lag is putting pressure on the wood making it harder for the second lag to go in.

During the lag screw test it appeared the standard 4ahr PBP005 did better than the HP PBP004 battery when you add the their times to drive and remove a lag screw. The HP PBP004 took 44.5s to drive and 17.81s to remove for a total of 62.31s. The PBP005 took 38.23s to drive and 23s to remove for a total of 61.23s. Considering the best prices I've seen on both batteries is Home Depot , a PBP005 2pk is $79.00 vs the HP PBP004 2pk is $99 suggest a 20% improvement which your times don't support.

John Bowman I completely understand what your saying .... but that’s why they have different kinds of drills.... some are cheap and week for your household stuff like frame hanging.... then you got some powerful ones ...so your opinion is just that ....with no physical evidence and proof of models to compare it to the dewalt it really doesn’t justify choosing a side .... maybe your dewalt was the top of the line and the Ryobi one was the $40 drill....

That being the case the next thing to consider is an accurate measurement of the remaining charge and the time it took to recharge each battery. Agree. Would be great to use a meter and measure. However heat also impacts performance. Including recharge time. That being said fast charge is convenient but not great for battery health. No point charging a hot battery for speed tests. It’s interesting from a marketing point of view. They are suppose to be both 18v/4ah. So obviously I think manufactures are getting away with rounding/generalizing. HP batteries may be a different quality battery. Actual 4ah or even plus more. Don’t let the lawyers get wind of regular battery being less than 4ah. Ryobi has become a very nice tool. Love my Makita. But Ryobi marketing department has paid off.

Yeah as lopsided as his opinions are the regular Batts seemed to hold a charge better too if you watch the times they weren't off by as much as he favors the hps. I'll take an extra battery and charger for $30. Learn how to do comparison videos. We are all watching because we like Ryobi. Do you use a BT3000 EVERYDAY? I DO. What is the WH rating on the black and on the grey ? I have 2 different grey ...a 42WH and a 72WH ...looking at the 6AH and the 9AH WH rating too . I'm sure it has something to do with how long they last and the power .

Nice comparison, but I can’t justify spending 2x the price to have such little power gain unless I was running them on a chopsaw or skill saw or something like that but for drills and impacts the standard 4.0 blacks are plenty good n still outlast my buddies with dewalt and makita 👍🏻

Sadly, you are comparing the old black battery, which is not a lithium plus, to a lithium plus HP. I have found that under load, the lithium plus batteries hold up the voltage under load without sagging much better than to the non-plus batteries. The lithium + batteries used higher-quality cells inside. And sadly it looks like Ryobi is going to do away completely with the lithium plus batteries. Grab them when you find them, folks.

This is the cheapest I’ve ever seen these batteries just one battery goes for at least Home Depot in Canada for a one battery $168 is the price on a normal day if you can find these batteries which is damn near impossible in Canada this is my rearview if someone can tell me the difference between what I bought and what is on this video would be most appreciated thank you very much

TIM from Canada I really don’t care on the speed with Ryobi tools and your testing I am just impressed that a cheap Ryobi drill like that can actually do the work everything in Canada has gone up at least three times the price on Ryobi drills and other Big names and drills you can thank COVID-19 for this do you know you can get a better price for drills in the USA and in the UK for better selections and a more variety of drills and you can in Canada let me explain you to this song Thursday, November 26 2020 so USA has Thanksgiving so they had their black Friday deals I went into Home Depot to get batteries just like what he’s got on his video here it was only two days into this holiday.. deal and I got there and I got the last battery this is supposed to be a black Friday deal they are supposed to have deals for everyone which I find is very disappointing for Home Depot and let me tell you the selection they had at the Home Depot the one I went to was very disappointing very little tools they had all the names out that were supposed.. on sale but they have very little there and supplies they might’ve had one or two of each item for example Ryobi batteries were supposed to be the big one like he is explaining to you in this video very little supply very little demand Home Depot‘s in Canada very disappointing especially with Ryobi tools"ever since COVID-19 has hit Ryobi has made it to Maine object of you over a price The Ryobi brand. It would be nice to go into a Home Depot in Canada to find a Ryobi tools or any tool you were looking for and I have to use in price but no they bring their tools to Canada and expect the Canadians to pay three times the price for these cheap tools I thought Ryobi tools supposed to be the handyman tool it has a pro tool price well this is my review
