Ryobi VS Knock Off Battery, Run test and Disassemble !!!!

This has probably been noted somewhere below but I just had to... You'll notice the knockoff "6Ah" ran about the same as the genuine 4Ah... That's because the knockoff 6Ah only has 4Ah worth of cells in it hahah. If those are indeed 2000mAh cells as they're labeled, then 10 of them would yield 4000mAh (4Ah) at 18V which agrees with your observed runtimes. You'll notice this result is similar to the 4Ah genuine pack as well. I'll bet that if you open up the 4Ah knockoff pack you'll find the cells do not add up to what's printed on that label as well. You'll also notice that the size of the knockoff 6Ah pack is about the same as the genuine 4Ah, again because they have the same size and qty of cells in them. I have seen some decent (not awesome, but decent) knockoff packs out there, but these are clearly a scam. Thanks for sharing. Just FYI the HP or HD or whatever it is on the 6Ah Ryobi pack indicates that the cells are capable of producing more current for heavy load applications, but the total capacity is the same and in a relatively low draw application like this it will perform the same as a non HP version.

I have had "Batteries Plus" rebuild a couple of those type batteries for me, they told me they all contain sub par batteries originally, they assured me the batteries they rebuild them with would be more impressive, 4 years later, the rebuilds have better performance and runtime than new ones from the manufacturer. Just thought I'd share.

the ryobi knock offs aren’t bad at all. just lower your expectations I got the 6 amp hr battery’s as the equivalent to the OE ryobi 4 amp hr battery’s. picked up 4 of them for 120$ out the door on e bay 6 months ago they get used daily and so far they are holding up good. and they have about 20% more to give then the OE 4 amp hr battery’s. 👍

If you could count, you would have realized that the 6ah knock off had 2 sets of 2ah cells in series, making 4ah. If you compare the 6ah knock off (which is actually rated at 4ah based on the cells) to the 4ah genuine battery, the runtime is identical and still a better deal to get the knock off. So what if the ratings are off, just get the larger knock off and its still far cheaper than the 4ah genuine. They just slapped a 6ah label on it to make them sell.

Most likely the "18050" number from the orange batteries is actually "18650", which is the cell that is used in all of our power tools, laptop batteries, vapes, etc. The "20R" number means 2 amp hours or 2000 mah and there were 3 rows of 5 cells. 5 cells make up an 18v or 20v (same exact battery packs believe it or not) battery pack. 3 rows of 5 two amp hour batteries = six amp hours. So if you see an 18 or 20v battery pack that is not very tall, but is say 3000 mah, it has 5 cells and each one is 3000 mah. A 5000 mah short battery pack has 5 cells that are 5000 mah each, etc. A medium height battery pack that's 3000 mah would have 10 cells (2 rows of 5) that are 1500 mah each. Hope this helps!

I guess the knockoffs are good to use in low to modest drain usage. The weedeater or the drill might be good for them. For a high draw tool like my yard blower, it would be frustrating to change that battery more than needed. I guess both have a place.

Yes I have many of these for light work, drill, lights but they suck for circular saw and grinder. For the price it is nice to always have several charged batteries though.

The numbers on those cells "18650" is the diameter and length of the battery, so you would pronounce it "eighteen - six fifty". Some of the newer batteries use larger cells which preform better because they allow a higher amp draw. Thanks again for the content.

Thanks for posting this. I came across it after I already bought some knockoffs that look exactly like what you are reviewing. I got 4 of the "6Ah" for $108. If they last as long as genuine 4Ah, I'm a happy camper. Love my Ryobi tools, but can't keep dropping crazy money on batteries.

Right now Ryobi Days has two 4ah batteries for $99 and you get a free tool. One of the free tools you can get is 2 more batteries so $99 for 4. Hard to buy knockoffs when you can get OEM for $25 a battery for 4ah.

Do the math. Name brand , $140 with a run time of 2.5 hours. Knock off, $35, with 1.5 hour run time. . You can buy 4 knock offs which would be 6 hours of run time with a simple change out. most people don't need that much run time. so buy 2 knocks off. and pocket $70 and still get three hours of run time.

I love Ryobi ! I grabbed the 2 pack of 4ah batterys for 79.00 so I bought a couple. Thats ten bucks per amp hour. I Found the 9ah for 74.00 apiece when you buy four so I so I picked those up too. I wouldn't want to bother with those and this confirms it. Thanks for doing this for us.

Take a look at the formula for peukert's number. It will give you some detail about battery discharge rates so you can better understand the difference in these batteries. Essentially there is a modifier on how a battery discharges depending on the voltage being drawn. This does apply to Li-Ion on a scale of 1:1.09 Also the HP batteries are more likely to be constructed of 90% efficient materials vs the knockoffs at 80% (or less). 18650 is a description of the battery. 18mm in diameter, 65mm in length. About the size of a AA with 2.5x the voltage. Perfect for powerering LEDs @3.3v±10%. If you were to run 2x 2Ah 18650 3.7v in series (pos butted up against neg) and complete the circuit, the resulting power would be 7.4v 2Ah. If you were to run them parallel (split the wire and run to each seperately, then feed from pos on each back to a single line) the resulting voltage would be 3.7v 4Ah. This essentially creates a larger tank to draw energy from. To achieve 18v they run 5x 18650s in series. Given the batteries ryobi uses are 1.3Ah, 1 series gives us the 1.3Ah pack. If another series is run in parallel with the first we get 2.6Ah or "2.5Ah" pack, 3 series in parallel @3.9Ah or "4Ah" etc. You can find another good read about cell efficiency below. 18650 can be anything... since it is simply the format of the cells (like AA and AAA): 18mm diameter - 65mm length All manufacturers of Li Ion cells (Samsung, Panasonic, but also cheap knockoffs) offer this format. The new format in the most recent high-capacity LiIon-batteries is 21700 - which you guess is is 21mm diameter 70mm length

My takeaway: if you want the $140 6ah HP battery, you can save $60 by buying two knock-off "6ah" batteries and getting about the same combined capacity. Or if you are considering the common 2-pack of genuine 4ah batteries, getting two of the generic 6ah could save you $20. The knock-offs are labeled incorrectly (the stated ah is a lie), but they aren't priced badly considering their actual ah per dollar. This doesn't consider Ryobi's obviously better warranty and replacement service. Now I'm curious to see inside other no-name brands.

Nice video. The other thing about the knock-offs is that they expire much faster than the OEM's. After as little as two or three cycles they stop being able to take a full charge. In my experience, they become pretty much useless in a very short while. I returned the four I bought to Amazon.

The worst lifespan I ever had from a lithium battery was one Ryobi (out of 4 I bought at the same time) that stopped taking a charge after a few months. I use both OEM and knockoffs. My experience is that a 6Ah knockoff = a 4Ah OEM battery and that (if I don't count that one Ryobi lemon battery) the average OEM might take a few more recharge cycles but the difference doesn't appear to be much. Bottom line, knockoffs have been a better value for me.

These tests are really useful, but for me the true test is how many duty cycles the battery can manage before its performance starts to fail. Obviously this will take time. It may turn out that the genuine batteries work out cheaper in the long run for a heavy user like a pro who thrashes them every day.

That is very true, I have had mine for about 9 months and it has to be close to a 100 charge cysles on it, and it still works good. I use my Ryobi light in the babys room as a night light so i let it run all night and then charge the next day, so I am running it a lot..

Hello from Australia. Thank you for the video. I am presently learning about these battery issues and have realised that there is quite a lot to it. The worth of these batteries (or in essence, 18650 cells used in these 36/40V batteries) cannot be condensed to just how long they will last - one must consider the maximum current they can supply under load and other specifications. Nearly all 18V Li batteries use standard 18650 Li batteries. The difference in run time or AH is the quality of each 18650 battery as each brand will have a different mAH rating. 18650 batteries operate at 3.7V, so 5x3.7= 18.5V.

I just bought a 5ah knockoff for $35 on Amazon and it's been awesome. The oem Ryobi 4ah is $109 and the 6ah is $129, so I'm really pleased with my purchase. Now I just need to see how many cycles it lasts for.

While calling these thing Chnese-iam, remember that the genuine Ryobi battery is also made in China. You get what you paid for. Don't expect a $30 aftermarket battery can be as good as a $99 one.

Your "6AH" knock-offs are only 6AH on the outside label. I can see by the video that they are 5 pairs of cells, so that each pair of cells is in parallel. Just from that, the capacity is 2x2Ahr, which makes 4A-hr, assuming the samsung cells are really what they claim. That is the same configuration as the Ryobi pack, but I don't know what cells they are. Also, your load is not a heavy load, which would favor cells that don't handle high loads very well.

This also explains why the batteries cost so much. Those are basically vape mod batteries. Normal price is $20 for 2 and the 6Ah battery has 10 18650's in it. Obviously better batteries cost more, but without the other components that make them work with the tools, that's already $100. I feel like all my complaints about battery cost just got shot down. Those are Samsung 18650 batteries. Wrap number is different than number on the inside. Inside number is normally the part number for the tube that houses the internals of the battery. Also, not suppposed to take the batteries out like that so there would be no point in adding cost to rewrap the 18650's.

The 18650 in the battery numbering code means it is a lithium-ion rechargeable battery of a particular size with a nominal 3.7 Volt output and typically comes rated at between 2500 ma to 4000 ma, depending on the specs for the particular battery. Amazon sells a variety of these, and if you take a look at what is available, it is possible that some may have a higher capacity. After much trial and error, I now wait for the big sales and then buy my Ryobi tools and Ryobi batteries directly from HD, which is the cheapest way - please note that many HD stores don’t stock all Ryobi items, but you can save a wasted trip to HD by selecting and buying what you want on line and typically getting 2 day FedEx shipping to your home or shop for free. Returns can be made to the local HD, with a receipt.

China can make very good products, the problem with Chinese factories is they will make you exactly what you ask for. So the same factory could make you $100 batteries that beat OEM spec or $10 ones with recycled nicads inside and Li-ion written on the front.

I remember watching a video of someone looking at a cheap powerbank and when he took it apart to test the cells some didn't have any power at all. Turns out half the cells were just tubes filled with sand to give them weight. I wonder if that's the case with these no name batteries you have.

2000 ma batteries are on the low side. I believe 1500 ma is as low as they go. The higher the amp hour, the longer the battery lasts. Looked at changing the cells in a battery once, but if you're not buying in bulk, it's cheaper (and easier) to buy a knockoff.

As some other commentators mentioned, the 18650s in the generic are not Samsung - also, in addition to the Ah rating being inflated (4Ah on the generics more likely to be 3 or 2), the CDR rating is also worse than the OEMs too. Essentially, the maximum current that can be drawn from the battery is significantly less on the generic when compared to the OEM - which is why it's half priced. If you ever do another video tearing down generic batteries - please consider getting a 18650 battery tester (like ones from Opus or Litokala) so that you can verify the claims that the generics are making.

Nice video, thank you. You're not being fair to the 6ah knock-off. It is not 50% less power, it is 40% less. You said it was 50%, but 1.5 hours vs 2.5 hours is 60%, not 50%. So the knock-off has 60% of the power of the genuine battery (or 40% weaker). You were correct about the 30% of the 4ah batteries though. You're also right that both last less, but be fair with the numbers. It's curious that the smaller battery is closer in power to the genuine one. If logic follows, the 1.5ah knock-off should be quite close the genuine one (but I doubt it). I use both a genuine one and the other also , but they are different and I can't make a comparison. My knock-off looks exactly like yours, 4ah I got from WM for $22 ($80 for genuine). I can put 10 pounds of pressure in a tire and buff the wax on one car on one charge. I'd bet the genuine one would do twice that. It's a piece of mind thing for my Ryobi tire inflator. At about 73% off, it was a good buy for me. alot of times they use real samsungs, only they take used ones out of old tools, so you get the real deal but used ones, sometimes, although vanon is really good for imitation

id still go with the knock off. even though less run time you can get 3 knockoffs for 1 ryobi and run your tool for longer. i have two of the 6.0 knockoffs and never had a issue.

What it really shows is that there is zero regulation on battery amp hour ratings. If they're listed at 4 ah the ryobi and the knock off would run almost identical times.

This guy is comparing a Ryobi 6ah to a Generic "6ah" that really is NOT a 6ah battery, CLEARLY its a 4ah battery with a mis-labeled 6ah stamp on it ... Can you NOT see the physical difference between the 2 batteries ..??

The 6ah in terms of dollars/minute of runtime.... $139 for 150 minutes of runtimes = 92 cents a minute for the Ryobi. $35 for 90 mins w/ the aftermarket = .38 cents per minute. It's pretty clear which is cheaper......The other factor that would be awesome to know is how many total cycles each survives till failure and then figure it out in dollars/cycle.

I pursched a 6ah Lithium off ebay, my tool did not perform with the same power as the original Ryobi battery. Tried it in my drill, lawn mower, line trimmer and grinder. None of them had the same "kick" in performance, I could actually hear it in the tool when it was running. It also went flat quicker. Wasted $36. Would not buy again, Ill stick to genuines.

Yes I agree the fake ones are not as good an the name brand one. As you seen in the video I got a 4.0ah battery and its says 6.0ah battery. RIp off, but I only had 20 bucks at the time and needed another battery, so it worked in a pinch. Thanks for watching

There is little comparison between buying something off eBay and Amazon. If I have a problem with something bought on eBay it is a struggle trying to resolve it. If I have a problem with something on Amazon they refund my money almost instantly without any argument or hoops to jump through (probably because I'm a good customer that seldom returns items.) Dishonest sellers don't survive long on Amazon but they seem to flourish on the eBay platform.

I guess if you compare the "6AH" knock off, to the 4ah name brand, the results are pretty similar.. But the savings is also not very significant.. I used to do a lot of RC car stuff, and with the lithium batteries, one of the more significant factors was the discharge rate. If you exceed the discharge rate you greatly reduced useable output.. So a very high discharge rate is always desirable on power tools as most have significant power demands.. It is likely that the off brand would have made its rated capacity, but only if used in short pulses.. So the knockoffs do have some utility depending on how you use your tools.

I have used them in all my tools, In the video I just used the light to drain them because it was the fastest way to drain them quietly !!! They work OK not the best but if your broke it will work.

I appreciate you doing this, I have noticed with the china clone batteries, everything from rewrapped used cells, to under rated cells. I have also seen when real cold poor output. But my big fear is they aren't stable and become a fire risk. I have seen alot of fires started by lithium packs. Companies here in the u.s. can be made to answer. But good luck with a chinese copy company.

My experience is 18650-20R would be 2000mAH. I've seen -22, -24, and -26, which is roughly the limit for that cell size (I laughably got some 18650 button-top cells with a cheap headlamp I got that say 9800mAH on them, which is laughably ludicrous, they tested more like 1500).

Almost all of the people who perform aftermarket battery test do not state if they performed a drain and recharge cycle prior to their testing. If a cell is not balance with the other cells this can adversely affect your test. Next time, do this when you get a new battery for testing, perform a full drain and recharge for at least 4 cycles, and at the last cycle, leave the battery connected to the charger for 48 hrs. Leaving the battery connect for 48hrs will allow the cell to perform a full balance.

I use Ryobi in a professional capacity. I have 3 lithium batteries that have lasted me 3years now. The Nicad battery that came with the drills only lasted about 2 months before I noted a drop in performance. The 18650 battery is a standard battery used for almost everything. it is 18mm wide and 650mm long hence 18650. The higher the milliamp the longer the tool will run for, so 2 battery may look the same but one will have a higher capacity and have a higher price so off-brand batteries tend to use low capacity batteries as they are cheaper. An interesting fact: A high capacity 18650 holds more potential energy than a lightning bolt

One problem here is these batteries have to be soldered together, something that could cause a fire if we try that in our workshops. Also, some of the lithium-ion batteries have button tops and others have flat tops, some of which are lower than the case around them. 5 batteries in series provide those 18 volts. When they are in series, they double the stated capacity of just one cell. The Ryobi batteries have a plug in one of the screw holes that makes it difficult to open the battery. I have a 4Ah battery that still powers my hand vac even though it measures less than half the 18 volts. I believe something inside failed so it has only half the voltage it should have when my charger says it is fully charged. It does not power other Ryobi tools, though. The bit to remove a screw is a security Torx bit - it has a hole in the middle of the bit. Whatever the guy was using was impossible to see clearly. Some of my Ryobi 18volt batteries have been in use since 2011. Anyone having an older black Ryobi charger that came with their blue-yellow Ni-Cd batteries beware. Do not attempt to charge lithium-ion batteries with that charger or it will make them unusable. Ni-Cd batteries, on the other hand, can be charged on the green lithium chargers.

Just a caution on the knock off. Mine has an insulator on the battery terminals on the side where the batteries are not connected across each other so the metal release spring cant short them out. The other side isn't an issue as the spring sits adjacent across a set of batteries.

Well I can answer that. It depends on the tool!! In my ryobi melt down video the old impact kept going an was able to melt down all the way till the very end. The new impact shut off around 170 degree, as for the new hammer drill it will shut off if it senses to much torque,witch is stupid!!!

I have bought multiple different brands of the fake batteries...the best being vannon....having said all of that I have found basically no difference with the main exception being slot of the fake ones dont have a grippy rubber molding on them and they tend to slide around more, but for the price it's all good...

That's disappointing. That means the 6ah knockoff is only 4ah producing less then Ryobi 4ah and the 4ah is more like a 3ah so it's definitely a huge difference. Ryobi has a 9ah battery now I'd love to see a review of them...

Actually power over run time is something I'd love to see. Do the bigger batteries deliver more power then the smaller ones or is it regulated pretty consistent and just gives you a longer run time.

They all work good, but they do not have any of the HP style or put out extra power, But I have herd about people getting battery's with old cells in them. So its really up to you. My 6 and 4 ah ryobi there isn't much different s maybe 30 min run time. were the name brand one is huge difference you know.

You took apart a 6Ah, but it has 2 rows of 5 cells at 3.7v and 2000 mAh. That totals up to a 4Ah battery at 18v, not a 6Ah battery. That explains the runtime deficiency. Can you take apart the 4ah or 6ah ryobi to see what those cells are?

@@Impact-OG In these 18v/20v packs, the cells are about 3.7v (4.0v max without load), so you put five in series to get the required 18v. Then to add runtime (Ah), you put multiple of those 5 cell rows in parallel. I am betting if you opened the ryobi 4ah you would find the same as what you found in the knock off 6Ah. That sucks, since I was looking to get some of these knock offs because of the decent reviews and price. But if you compare the knock off '6Ah' to the real 4Ah the price isn't that different.

That is so false advertising. The 6AH is actually only 4Ah if you do the design maths. They lied about the capacity. The running time for their supposedly 6AH is similar to the real Ryobi 4Ah, which confirms this. The other issue is the number of recharge cycles beteen the two. You can not trust anything tney say

Home depot has 2 3ah ryobi with charger for $99 right now. Then you can pick a tool up to $129 if i remember right. 1/2" 3 speed impact for me.

Good and honest review. However, I am not totally agree with the conclusions. As somebody has pointed out, the so called "6AH" batteries are actually 4AH batteries. If you compare them with real Ryobi batteries, their capacity could be similar but the price difference will not be much different either. When on sale, I had bought a two-pack Ryobi 4.0Ah battery for $80. Their performance may not be different that much but you have better quality assurance and warranty by Ryobi. Another point is that the battery you show is RHY battery not Samsung's. RHY is a Chinese brand. Their batteries are not bad capacity-wise but I am not sure about their reliability. One more comment. The aftermarket batteries are not created equal. One bad brand I would avoid is Vanon batteries. Beside they use bad quality cells, much worse than the RHY brand shown in the review, the company is the least ethical company I have ever dealt with. I would not buy anything from them, ever!

Yeah this video is almost 2 years old so when i filmed it ryobi batteries were a little more expensive. Now you can get a Ryobi Hp 4.0 for 40 buck on ebay too know.

I've used the genric and they have held up over time there is a few minutes difference in run time but not enough to warrant buying the OEM. However I have found the 4Ah are probably correctly labeled, the 5Ah and 6Ah are actually 4Ah that they have lied about the rating. I've taken several apart and they all contain 2000Mah cells so there is no way they can put out the higher ratings. So when buying just consider your only getting 4Ah batteries no matter what they are labeled and do not pay extra for the 5 or 6. Samsung makes 2000/2500/3000 Mah capacities this is the only way to pull more amperage with same number of cells and Ryobi uses higher quality cells in their 6Ah batteries and more cells on the 9Ah. Lately I've had a problem that one generic brand runs in all my tools except a leaf blower. Not sure what is going on there???

my p108 ryobi battery. It appears to take a charge. volt meter says 18v little green bars indicate full charge. When I apply a load (drill) the tool runs for less than a second and stops. sometimes if I release the trigger and pull it again it runs for less than a second. (Almost like its a faulty tool switch) It is not as I can do this with all of my dozen plus tools. same thing happens. I drilled a couple tiny holes to access the main terminals ( tests at 20V) as suggested in some videos, although I haven't tried to shock it yet, as I am not sure thats the remedy in my case. after the attachment of the tool , the battery green bars are dead although I gat a read of 20v at the tiny holes I drilled. Do you have any ideas of how to fix this battery. I had it replaced on warrenty already but would like to solve this mystery and maybe have another working battery as well. putting the battery in the charger restores the green full bar indicator but does not fix the situation - Merrill

2hr 30min @ $139 vs. 1hr 30min @ $35, 1hr less runtime is not half. You could buy 4 after-market batteries (= 6hrs runtime) or 1 OEM battery. 🤔 I'll take door number two for the win. That's what I think!

For me the knockoffs seem to be OK for run time, but for power output nope! Just had a knockoff 5Ah fail bang gone... I was abusing the hell out of it with brushed 1/2” drill and 30mm cone drill in ⅛” steel, brushed stuff don’t shut off if you overload them, they just keep going! Was in a difficult position and needed a 30mm hole, drill was getting hot & battery failed, popped on a Ryobi 2Ah & it just kept drilling. So the 2Ah Ryobi could output enough amps to do the job but the 5Ah couldn’t. Took the knockoff to pieces, it had blown a component off the circuit board, don’t know what, it was toast, comparing the Ryobi circuit board and the knockoffs there is no comparison, so apart from battery’s the real difference is in the design of the electronics, you get what you pay for and I have a new 4Ah Ryobi battery, lesson learnt.

I had the same problem and the welds on the battery fail under heavy amp load ok for light amp draw but i have had 5 of the 5ah battery fail while using a grinder and saws all. i have 2ah and 4ah Ryobi batteries that have lasted for as long as 8years before failing and always under heavy use.
