My adventures in Barbados continued in the village of Oistins, which is known for its seafood. In particular, Oistins Bay Gardens is known for its flying fish, which is a favorite of many locals, including Rihanna herself!
At Oistins Bay Gardens, you’ll find lots of food vendors selling lots of different types of seafood, including swordfish, tuna, marlin, mahi mahi, lobster, and flying fish. It’s an extremely popular hotspot on Friday nights, when they have music and huge crowds. It’s like a huge party!

We ordered some grilled flying fish for 40 BBD/$20 USD at Pat’s Place, as well as swordfish (35 BBD/$17.50 USD) and mahi mahi (35 BBD/$17.50 USD). So our meal came to about $55 USD total.
It cooked up so fast on the grill. The filets were beautiful. There’s an outdoor seating area where we could eat our food.
The flying fish were small but full of amazing flavor. I loved the fresh, grilled flavor, and the macaroni pie underneath was excellent. It was hot, while the macaroni salad on the side was cold. It was the perfect contrast!
I tried it with some glazy mustard and tartar sauce. The tartar sauce had a sweetness to it, while the mustard was a little spicy! It was like a peppery glaze. Next, I tried it with some of my David’s Been Here hot sauce.
Craig’s mahi mahi was also excellent, and Nerissa’s swordfish had almost been blackened. It was great and contained almost no bones. I loved my sauce on it. I loved mixing and matching the different fish dishes with the macaroni pie and the macaroni salad!
After we finished eating, we saw some bars and walked to Berinda Cox Fish Market. There were also some vendors selling wood crafts. At the end were men butchering fish including marlin, trigger fish, mahi mahi, and red snapper. They had a four-foot-long mahi mahi!
Nearby is the Atlantic Ocean, but we walked back to near where we started to grab a drink at Annie’s BBQ & Grill. We got rum & ginger ale, which was smooth and refreshing. It was perfect after the hearty fish and macaroni!

I am from Barbados and that food looks great, but I can guarantee the average Bajan is NOT paying $55USD for that food. LOL Many other places in Barbados you can get way better food from at an actual "street food price" but the draw to Oistins is the fresh fish. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for showcasing an important part of our food culture

Good early morning David. It's now 6:40 a.m here in Toronto Canada and I am salivating over all the fish dishes all three of you ate. I can eat anyone of them. The fish looked very delicious and cooked so fast. The macaroni pie and the salad were a surprise accompaniment to the fish, something I wouldn't have thought of. Since Craig is part Trini (through his mom), I think we will forgive you for jokingly saying "better than Trini mac pie". They are all tasty depending on the type of and the amount of cheese used. Some people put egg in their mac pie and some don't. That one doesn't look like it has egg in it. That fish monger skinned the fish in a way I have never seen before. Even big time chefs filet the fish by sliding the knife along to cut it. I always wondered why you didn't drink rum and coke and after hearing you say that you don't drink coke I get it. Smart. I love this Bajan series because it was simply done. Hope to see when it's busy with the music. Another good one David. And to Craig and Nerissa: you both are so humble and you both let David do his thing. Well done. David, you should have dipped your toes in the Atlantic ocean, hahaha, just for fun. And now on to the next one. Kudos everyone 🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦❤️

You went at the best time. I wish people would stop telling everyone to go on Friday night. That is the worst time to go. Who gives a crap about the music. We went and they played all 90 rap. If I wanted to hear that I will throw a cd in the stereo. The wait time was 2 hours to get served, then we had to stand to eat because there was nowhere to sit. We were waiting for our cab and a local goes, "come any day of the week to avoid the crowd."

@@nphipps9406 yeh u on jokes...because you say it so don't make it so. I don t like to school people cause i like jokes but here we go.... flying fish is a migratory fish that spawns in the waters between Barbados and Tobago. It's presence in both waters is seasonal. The demand for it increased drastically in the 80s after Bajans went to Tobago Trinidad and a couple of other Caribbean countries and taught fisher folks how to clean and filled the fish. It was seen prior as a nuisance fish and used largely for bait. No one to this day eat as much flying fish as Bajans. The preference was for the bigger fish eg king fish. Lots of things led to the scarcity of this fish. The demand for Caribbean fish inclusive of flying gish grew among expats in north America and England led to a large export market and rise of fishery companies. Trawling by Japanese and Asian boats removing everything out of the sea and damaging spawning beds and habitats and of course sea level rise and warming leading to invasive species which threaten habitats..etc... fish ain't belong to no country only the sea.
